This will be the first installment of a Mazdaspeed3 2.5L block swap! Consisting of Molnar Billet Rods, and Supertech stock compression, stock bore Pistons.
In the future, I plan to be doing a 2.5/2.3 comparison and breakdown.
Leave some questions if you have any!

Nice start to the series, thought about breaking my video into parts but I just threw it all together. I’ve put about 4000 miles on mine daily driving/ripping with no issues so far. I do wish I did aftermarket pistons but I was on a budget and time crunch

Love how I think "hmm i wonder if there are any new videos on the duratec swap" and lo and behold here it is.

I plan to do my best to document the swap as closely as I can, and take away as much uncertainty about what is good and what isn't about this swap as possible. The waters in terms of information about this swap are very muddy. Hoping to help clear it up.

Very valuable info especially for those that see this in the future and are looking at their options. I hope you still intend on making a video on the differences and misconceptions! Beginning my research process it seems there's quite a bit of debate around rebuilding the stock 2.3 and doing the 2.5. Thanks for the info!

Hey nice video good info! I will be doing an indepth video on 2.3 disi head /2.5 bottom end But what you can do is drill and tap the back of block with 10an fitting and drill and tap the oil filter housing with 4an fitting makes for a cleaner look

I'm just starting the process of bolting my 2.5 swap together for my 2008 Mazdaspeed 3. I have questions about using the 2.3 PCV valve vs. The Damond plate. And using the 2.5 timing gear with the 2.3 cams.

@@Dyl_Cam I got the Damond plate & a new OEM Mazda PCV valve, to use with a dual oil catch can system. I compared the 2.5 timing chain & sprockets to the 2.3 items and swapped everything to the 2.5 stuff.

Good video, my ms6 went zoom zoom boom. Getting ready for the 2.5 swap, Can the speed 2.3 forged crankshaft be used in the 2.5?
@WeeManWTF2
@WeeManWTF2 2 жыл бұрын
the crankshaft main journals are theoretically the same, according to the spec sheets. however you would need to look into using a Long Rod kit of some kind. Honestly, depending on what your goal is, I see no reason to change the crankshaft out for the 2.3 one, unless you plan to make silly power. I've been searching all over the internet, groups, forums, etc. and have yet to see anyone breaking the 2.5 cast crankshaft.

wow it's been 5 months...dang. I got a 2017 2.5L with 31K miles for my daughters swap. Got the Molnar rods. 2 questions should I worry about ring gap using the stock 2.5 pistons, and do you think I should go to a try metal bearing for the rods or stock bearings or slap in the bearings that came in the 31K mile engine. I am going to drill and tap my block for the oil return too. I hope parts are getting easier to find. I'm in Texas, if there is something you want me to hunt around for let me know.

Are the pistons and rods interchangable between the two engines?
@WeeManWTF2
@WeeManWTF2 2 жыл бұрын
Pistons and rods between the 2.3 and the 2.5 are NOT the same. The 2.3 has a 94mm stroke, with a 6" rod length. The 2.5 has a 100mm stroke, and a 5.75" rod length. Bore of the 2.3 is 87.5mm Bore of the 2.5 is 89mm. I will be using stock sized pistons and rods for the 2.5, but forged.

@@WeeManWTF2 Oh, well that makes me feel a lot better that it takes me a month or two to get this stuff done these days. Im not 19 anymore lmao. Used to stay up till 4-5am working on my DSMs and RX7. Figured you were done already since you uploaded this video in February. Do you know if anyone makes Pistons with Direct Injection dishing that work with the Molnar rods in the 2.5 block? Doing the swap in my speed right now. Started pulling my engine 2 days ago. Have a 2.5 sitting in my shop. Going to be throwing a stock bottom end in there for now, but these things are so cheap I will probably pick up another one to put Molnar rods and some kind of stronger pistons in so I can max out my cst4.
@WeeManWTF2
@WeeManWTF2 2 жыл бұрын
@@EvlEgle Your best bet would be to try to order 2.3 DISI pistons and see if they will make/have any in the 2.5 bore (89mm) But the issue you'd run into there, is piston height.

I'm going to do this same swap to my daughters speed 3. going to do forged pistons and rods. because the 2.5L crank is cast I was thinking about having the crank sent out to be cryo treated. Do you think that will get any more reliable horse power range from the 2.5L. I am looking for high 300's to 400 HP. Man my daughter is a lucy girl. Not to mention I want her out of my date car.
@WeeManWTF2
@WeeManWTF2 2 жыл бұрын
In my personal opinion, if you're trying to hit that kind of power reliably, I would recommend considering building up the 2.3, just because of the Forged crank. Now, based on speculation and here-say, I've heard of the 2.5 blocks built up with Rods and Pistons to make anywhere from 4-500 hp. I have yet to hear of the crankshaft being the failure point in any duratec based build, Mazdaspeed or not. Again, I can't confirm or deny that 100%, just based on what I have seen on KZfaq, the 2.5 swap, and other Mazda Facebook groups. Couldn't hurt to cryo treat it I suppose.

Thanks, I appreciate, and value your opinion. I am looking forward to your next video. Think I am going to swap in the 2.5 to get my girl by, and see if the 2.3 crank can be ground. then build from there. I just wish she wasn't such a hammer footed mean driver. I have created a monster..lol
