Great video, Mr. Maslov! - I've been vinyl shopping for over 45 years & also worked in record stores for around a decade before moving into the distribution side of things >>> started my own record label, etc., etc. In my, behind-the-counter, record store days - 3 different stores - the store policy, re; used/new vinyl sleeve price stickers was... we placed the price sticker on the outer plastic sleeve which were easily removable, but we used a very blunt pencil and wrote the price and the filing number on the inside of the LP/12"/7" sleeve, *extremely lightly*, so no damage or indentation was done to the sleeve at all & also, to make sure no customer tried to tamper with the price, etc.. The pencilled-in price & filing # were extremely easy to erase... when a customer bought a record, one of our staff would use a simple eraser and remove the inside-sleeve price/file number >>then easily remove the outer price sticker >>> so we could give the customer their purchse *and a free* protective pvc outer sleeve. For outer CD cases, we used non-removable price stickers... but when a customer bought a CD, we swapped the stickered CD jewel-case and re-housed the CD in a brand new CD case, again... for free. (We recycled all our old outer plastic-sleeves and CD cases). Simple task for our staff which made for a happy, satisfied customer w/ their purchase - completely unspoiled, i.e., as it originally arrived at our store from the distributor/orig. seller **A 100% win/win for everyone, and, so, so easy for the store staff to do.** I've been a music collector for over 45 years and your topic is *so important* for all of us record store customers/collectors, & *so infuriating* when you find a title you really have been after for the longest of time and some bozo-headed, lazy half-wit has put a non-removable sticker on an expensive vinyl picture sleeve.... or worse; used an ink-ballpoint or a sharpie to write on the inside sleeve... There's absolutely *no excuse* for this pig-ignorant practice. I mean, would an antique store do this on any of their items??? All the very best to you & all the other commenters - G. in Japan!

One of the record stores that I frequent came up with a great idea. In addition to the sticker on the outer plastic sleeve, they use a form of "grease pencil" and write the price of the record on the deadwax of the vinyl. It very easily wipes off without a trace- no smudge, smear, nothing. The person at the register can take the record out and compare the price on the deadwax with the outer sleeve price. If it's a different price or been wiped off, then they check their inventory pricing. Works like a charm.

I retired to the Phoenix area in 2012 from San Francisco leaving behind Amoeba, Rasputin, Tower, and Revolver. Then, to my great surprise I discovered The In Groove in Phoenix. The store has moved and grown, but remains friendly, helpful, fun, and provides a great selection. Shipping (a lot during COVID) is timely and always packed extremely well.

I work about a half mile from The In Groove and I wouldn’t go back there if it was the only record store in Phoenix and they were giving records away. OK, maybe if they were free, but the CVS just down the street has better atmosphere and no used mattress salesman for an owner. The best record store in Phoenix does not deal online, which I am thankful for. If I want to pick something online there are plenty of great options, but that isn’t the subject of your rant (and I say rant with respect 🫵).

I think just about every record I’ve bought new for some time has been shrink wrapped or in a cellophane bag with never a price tag touching it. I have a couple from prob 20 years ago that have the sticker on the sleeve but I kinda like seeing that I got White Blood Cells at Rough Trade for 8.99 when it came out… but yeh for second hand it’s a ball ache. I just tell myself it’s about the music not the sleeve, along the line of Jello Biafra’s comment that he collects songs, not physical objects. Love that you’re doing videos about this. And cocktails too! Big fan in London here.

this was a friggin' great video...i got some much-needed laughs.....and you guys are right...so many used stores don't know what they're selling and don't care about their merchandise...the plastic on the outside is such an easy concept (but i will admit...i hate that plastic crap on the inside...i'd rather have the original sleeve no matter what the condition....especially the older ones that were more than just there to hold the record in)....anyway...thanks for this trip....hope you both are well...peace...rocky

Fun stuff, guys! Lots of great stores, if I ever get back to the Pacific Northwest...lived on Key Peninsula for a year during junior high, still miss it...one of these days, I'm going to figure out the name of the record store in Tacoma I used to shop at - I know exactly where it was, know what stores were around it, I can even remember the clerk's usual khaki colored clothes, but i'll be damned if I can remember the name of the place...it's making me nuts...they treated 12 year old me well! 🙂

This is one of my biggest gripes as well...especially huge stickers! I have bought in the past from Everyday Music when they had the Broadway area store and those stickers were hell to get off let alone without messing up the covers. But on the 45's they would put them on the labels...early/mid 50s Decca label are guaranteed junk labels. I have bought and sold at High Voltage...great store and layout...not a single complaint whatsoever. I haven't yet been to Portland for records but have heard a ton and am itching to go south. I am in the south sound area and love my local store..Rainy Day in Olympia...definite must see..fair prices, stock rotates often...do check them out. I love easy Street in W Seattle too...haven't tried the food but love the vinyl:-) Jive Time is also great as you noted. Price stickers can USUALLY be removed without tearing the labels or sleeves although most take some of the shine/finish off of them but not easily seen unless you look really close...time consuming though🙂 A great video and thanks for doing it🙂

I go to the Salvation Army and they started using this big sticker that rips the cover right off. I was going to purchase a record and the clerk was adamant about the sticker as I told her not to. She put the sticker on went to remove it huge piece of the cover came off with it. Anyway went on Amazon and purchased 50.00 worth of Avery removable stickers for them. Thank You

My son has lived in Portland for about 8 years and we visit frequently. First, the new store in Sellwood that Dr. Robert misidentified is called The Record Pub. Nice guys, small store, both new and used, fair prices. My favorite stores in Portland: Tomorrow Records, Dig Vinyl (also in Sellwood), Jackpot Records (they also are a label) and you have to love Music Millennium, who have been around for about 50 years. If I lived in Portland (working on it), I would buy my new vinyl at Music Millennium. Of course, Everyday Music is also great for new records. I have yet to visit Too Many Records, hope to do that next time we are in town. Lastly, another good store you did not mention is 2nd Ave Records. Parking is a challenge and the place is a bit crowded and sort of a mess, but they have great new and used and excellent prices. Once we move up, we will road trip to Seattle and hit the stores up there.

Unfortunately that’s too true. I use to have a booth at an Antique Mall and I’d find my $10 stickers on $2 records. So I knew they’d been switched out. If you put it on the outer sleeve they’d switch that too. At the Mall I was in, there were over 300 booths, so you can’t expect the cashier to check that the record and sticker match. A real record store there’s no excuse for stickers on the cover. When I was in London, all stores just had sleeves out and the vinyl was behind the counter. You bring the sleeve up, they give you the vinyl to check over and see if you want it.

@Mazzy is right… the markup on new titles is not ideal. The issue, of course, is the dwindling supply of used (and not trashed) records. Also, the cash outlay on new titles can be steep. But more and more here in NYC the stores that used to trade almost exclusively in used titles have slowly added new inventory to their bins. I think it's probably inevitable.
