I know that cuz I'm a civil engineer in a very historic city, and I was pretty blown away when I first heard this. Fun fact. In Philadelphia in the 1700's people just threw ALL their trash down their outhouse shoots, apparently. So if you want to break ground somewhere, but an archeologist finds an undiscovered outhouse there, ("middens") the project gets put on hold until someone can come collect the historical artifacts for study. Crazy!
