Growing up in a Southern Baptist household makes this so cathartic - I'm absolutely losing my shit.

I grew up kinda poor and I always thought each family paid Santa a set amount to get presents the elves couldn't make, so my parents would just be straightforward and say not to get my hopes up for any big console Santa only got what he could afford with what we could give him, it worked out pretty well and explained why the rich or well off kids got better presents

Elizabeth Ready I bet you were a really smart kid. That kinda logic and practicality at a young age is impressive.

HoneyBun BB that's a good idea for families of any income I think. I grew up with the switch witch on Halloween where any amount of candy I gave up I would get a proportionate prize so as not to just eat a shit load of candy. Cause I always preceded the prize even if it was something small.

Well I was in gifted classes! And I liked believing in that sort of thing so I was willing to make my own conclusions and explanations for things to keep on believing as long as I could

I’m taking this idea and hopefully my kid turns out gifted too!

Ok listen. Tim curry in muppet treasure island sang a song about becoming a pirate, and my 6 year old self was 100% on board with joining his crew.

The delivery of "oh my God, Jesus had a son" was so fucking genuine. I could hear a definite flabbergasted air to the statement and it sent me.

Given that (according to Griffin on Wonderful) the McElroy parents literally pulled a "Christmas Story" one year and hid their coveted Nintendo 64 as the last gift, maybe these aren't the three best people to ask about managing Christmas disappointment.
@alecjahn6 жыл бұрын
Oh man we had that, too. Except our father sent us on a little scavenger hunt thing finding somewhat complex clues all over the house. The final clue was simply "7 13 3" After some confused deliberation (and a little help in the right direction) it was a simple letter-number cipher telling us to check in the truck (GMC). Voila: N64 and extra controller and Bomberman 64 in the back seat.

Nathan-DTS - Nah, if that had been the case they would have phrased the question like, "How can I convince my son that he wants a PS4", or something like that. It sounds more to me like they don't want him to play video games. That said, it's true that they left their true intent completely ambiguous.

I got a pink DS for Christmas from my grandparents one year, and it was my favorite gift I've ever received. Even though all my cousins got one too, I felt so special because no one had ever spent that much money on something for me that wasn't like, necessary for my survival. When I have kids, you bet your ass they're going to get the most bomb Christmas presents, but there is no way in heck Santa is going to take credit.

I remember in my family we'd mitigate large gifts, like a console with a unerstanding that I'd only get a few small gifts the next time. For example if I got a new console on my birthday, I'd only get one game at Christmas, maybe smaller toys. Basically my birthday and Christmas had a fixed budget per year, if i asked for something large on my birthday they'd take from the Christmas budget to afford that item, and vice versa. The trick being was that I didn't need to understand household budgets, I just needed to understand the end results. Their explanations being that it was too much work for the elvesto make large gifts for both ocasions. The real genius is how they weaponized my own selfishness if i asked for something too large: they would say yes(willing to bend their budget behind the scenes) but then I wouldn't be able to get gifts for X holidays ( X being the number of hypothetical budgets they'd have to allocate from) That was too torturous for me to handle so I'd back down and ask for something smaller, ensuring I'd still get gifts in the near future.
