I think almost every MC has had help from a friend or another rapper on at least one song. So folks need to stop making it seem like this is an issue. Most singers don't write all their songs so it would make sense every rapper doesn't. Lyte is still probably one of the baddest female MCs...scratch that...one of the baddest MCs that has touched a mic. Give the woman her flowers.

Yeah the lyrics was Dope but it was the Delivery that did it! Not just any mc could of pulled that off. Mc lytes voice was very unique n hard for a female rapper back then but also she didn't give off Dyke vibes to be coming so hard back then she wore Baggy clothes pretty much dresses like a dude but yet all us men still thought she was sexy AF! It should never be looked at as dumbing it down it's called reading the room. think about it all the big hit records from every genre to Michael Jackson folks don't care to hear anything deep like they having a lecture lesson. They drunk/ high and just want to have a good time with catchy beats & lyrics. That's why songs that are club bangers you aren't going to find Conscious Rap anywhere near it.

There is a "making of" video from 1988 on this platform. It's incorrectly dated but titled "The Stop The Violence Video: Overcoming Self Destruction (1990) HD" MC Lyte and Nelson George both explain why MC Lyte abandoned what she originally wrote in exchange for what she and LL wrote together.
