The MC5 INVENTED both Punk AND Metal -- yet are STILL unknown to much of the rock culture. The song's kind of a ripoff of The Troggs' "I Want You," but they take it to a whole new level of sonic power. Thanks for posting!

come on, now....they were a great live band, but most of the studio albums are kinda forgettable. these guys werent thinking "punk", just a badass rock band from Detroit. the Troggs, the Sonics set out to scare girls, not make em hot! one of their best!
@marrrtin5 ай бұрын
I wouldn't call it a rip off.. it's a cover, the album gives the Troggs credit. I had no idea about the words of Andover's finest coming from the greatest proto punk band of all time.

“The difference here, the difference which will sell several hundred thousand copies of this album, is in the hype, the thick overlay of teenage-revolution and total-energy-thing which conceals these scrapyard vistas of clichés and ugly noise. “Kick Out the Jams” sounds like Barrett Strong's “Money” as recorded by the Kingsmen. The lead on “Come Together” is stolen note-for-note from the Who's “I Can See for Miles.” “I Want You Right Now” sounds exactly (down to the lyrics) like a song called “I Want You” by the Troggs, a British group who came on with a similar, sex-and-raw-sound image a couple of years ago (remember “Wild Thing”?) and promptly disappeared into oblivion, where I imagine they are laughing at the MC5. Rolling Stone, April 5, 1969” Excerpt From: Bangs, Lester. “Main Lines, Blood Feasts, and Bad Taste”.
@theotrost31553 жыл бұрын
This was the first review Bangs wrote for Rolling Stone. All he is saying, in his cranky and provocative way, is that rock 'n' roll is derivative. That's also why Bangs loved rock 'n' roll, so I'm not really sure that counts as negative criticism. The Five credit the Troggs, specifically Larry Page and Colin Fletcher, as the writers of this song. Although Bangs initially objected to the "Kick out the Jams" lp, a couple of years later he listed it among his favorites
