I'm getting a new australian shepherd puppy and this is very good information. One thing that I haven't seen alot of trainers talk about. What if I already have a dog with me? She is 14 years old and pretty set in her ways. She is house trained but freely roams around the house. Should I not let the puppy see the dog during crate training? It feels like it may make things confusing if the puppy is wondering why he is the only one being asked to be in the crate. Let me know how to deal with this dilemma?

I am SO SO happy I found you guys! We just got a German Shepherd puppy and you guys have made me realize we’ve been expecting WAY TOO MUCH of our girl and getting frustrated for no reason. This was so needed! I’ve been a little anxious about the first 24 hours of when I bring my new puppy home next weekend. No one has really detailed what the first 24 hours could look like. I’ve researched, read, and asked around but still was concerned about overstimulating mg puppy on his first day. This was a very helpful guide!

The night time tips were invaluable to us thank you. Our now 4 month old puppy is better overnight than our 9 year old ever has been. Training her to our schedule was particularly good advice- for our older dog we adapted our schedule when she was a puppy (following different advice eg play time is 6am). I have energy limiting chronic illness so it’s much more important to get sleep right than for a healthy person. Something we add in is a distinctive tune on the alarm. Nothing exciting happens in our house until you hear that tune and then it’s super exciting and you get lots of praise for achieving a Good Morning! We can even adjust the time of the alarm at the weekend or have her in a donut on the bed and she doesn’t attempt to interact with us until she hears the tune.

I was so excited that when i clicked on the video it was the new 24 hours version, as we are literally in our first 24 hours with our first puppy in 16 years, just got her last night. Saturday mornings with McCann are going to be our new ritual during puppy months.

My secret for teaching my dog calm was after 15 minutes of anything, he took a 2 hour nap and got a potty break before and after every nap. We started out having to enforce them as he wasn't able to regulate and would get overtired after 10 to 15 minutes but by 4 months he'd choose to relax for at least 10 minutes a day. All of this work with the crate and calmness meant he was able to be weaned off the crate when we where there at 10 months with zero incidents and when we were gone at 12 months. What seems like too much crating in the beginning will save you months to years of having to erase bad habits and will make them more reliable sooner than a dog not crated or not crated often enough. He's almost 2 now and goes into the crate to eat and when asked to and settles and he can do this anywhere!

Just picked up my 6 month old sheltie a few days ago and even though she's older, I'm still implementing some of these tactics. She is pee pad trained but not outdoor potty, so scheduled feeding and crate training has been very important! Love these videos, thanks!

Thanks for this great couple of episodes! Super useful. You couldn't have presented the information any clearer. I've had dogs pretty much my whole life but while my dogs were always much cherished family members, they weren't well trained. I'm getting a new pup in the coming days/ weeks and I hope to correct previous mistakes. This guide has been incredibly useful.

This video is God sent. We just brought our 7 week old puppy home and when I put him in the cage he started yelping, and and crying and we didn't know what to do. After watching this video I realized it's normal especially given he's in a new environment away from his family. He was unhappy for 30 minutes and finally he fell asleep. We will start training and routine tomorrow. Thank you 😊 p

This is wonderful! Thank you so much! I would love and appreciate some guidance for situations where one has to leave home for work and are unable to regularly interact with the pup. I would be able to spend a lot if time before 8am and after 5pm but unfortunately cannot be home during that time. Any tips? Ofcourse I will put in a lot of effort over weekends.

You've literally saved us from at least a couple of anxiety attacks :) since our toy poodle is coming next friday! Would you say all "New puppy coming home" tips will work for a 4 month old dog? My puppies first night he was up 3 times in the night to pee. He woke up at 11, 3 and 5-6. I’m so glad he is trained and an adult now.

Love your videos. We just got our puppy two weeks ago and have been working with him on a lot of the stuff you have shared. Any advice on getting the chewing on us and the rug to stop.... I have tried grabbing him by the colar and getting him to relax but it doesn’t seem to be working, as soon as I release him he comes at us stronger.

We're picking up a mini bernedoodle next week (8.5 weeks) I have two crates but they are to big, I think. The smallest is 32x24x23. What size would you suggest to start his training? Great videos and now I'm binging to get prepared. Thank you.
