@@JordBrown91 No one wants to be on losing side of things when winning the MVP but there is also no one close to McDavid right now, he’s literally 3 points away from breaking finals point record, and 40+ points in a single postseason has only been done by two other players so it’s pretty rare and self explanatory.

im surprised that people forget about how small the goalie equipment was back then. goalie pads were practically the width of the goalies calves. it was statistically easier to score back then for this reason alone

Between the 79-80 season and 89-90 season (Gretzky golden years) the lowest goals per game average was 7.0; the highest was 8.0; and the median is 7.9. In the 96/97 season, the goals per game average was 5.8 which is much more comparable to todays game (14/15 season had a 5.5 g/pg) and Gretzky still put up 97 points in 82 games as a 36 year old (meaning he’s pretty far past his prime years). The point of all these stats is to say Gretzky’s 200 point seasons in the 80s are definitely inflated compared to todays game, but even when playing in a time period more adjusted to modern NHL as a 36 year old, he was still putting up close to 100 points a season. Had Gretzky played modern era, he would still most likely be the greatest player of all time, but his point records wouldn’t be an untouchable record; it would definitely be more grounded and plausible for someone like McDavid to break it.

Not even a leafs fan, but dude McDavid and Matthews are incomparable. It’s kinda like Ovi and Crosby. Ovi was a goal scorer, Crosby is a playmaker. McDavid drives the play and scores, Matthews scores and that’s all he’s expected to do.

Take into consideration this is in a much more competitive era against a defensive juggernaut team so its not sniffing Gretzky its surpassing Gretzky. McDavid is putting up a goat clinic in the finals.

McDavid doesn’t just skate past Tkachuk; he leaves him wondering if his skates are tied together as he slides face first into his own net. I mean the Panthers were playing catch-up so much, they should get a sponsorship from Heinz ... and their shots on goal were like my New Year’s resolutions - full of hope but ultimately going nowhere. GO OILERS GO!

The real reason Gretzky and Lemieux racked up so many points is the goalies were horrific, defenders were slow and mostly unskilled, and scouting and coaching were primitive. Scoring like this in the current game is maybe even more impressive.

Gretzky's first Finals appearance was in 1983, which only lasted 4 games as it was a sweep for the Islanders. During Game 2 of this year's Cup Finals, Sportsnet showed a comparison of great players who struggled out of the gate in their first Cup Finals game following McDavid recording 0 points in Game 1. Gretzky recorded 0, Lemieux recorded 1, Crosby recorded 0, and Ovechkin recorded 1. All 5 games ending in losses for those players. Lemieux and Ovechkin would lead their teams to a Cup series win after losing the first game, while Gretzky and Crosby would wait a full year to hoist the Cup (which happened to be against the Islanders and Red Wings for the second straight year respectively).

Yes, lemieux played during a time with all those things u mentioned....for a 1980's Pittsburgh Penguins. Also many of the players he played with weren't the players they ultimately became when he played with them. Not until post 92

Maybe people that know more about hockey can weight in. My feeling is McDavid had some trouble figuring out the Panthers and, now that he has, the points are going to come faster than the Panthers can recover.

I get chills watching mcdavid play sometimes, the guy is why people pay to watch sports, hes unbelievable, Olympic weightlifting is not a very popular sport but there’s a man in that sport who is doing things that people never seen before, his name is Lasha Talakhadze, he is simply lifting numbers that people thought were possible, his level of dominance is unprecedented, I get the same feeling watching him as I do watching Connor McDavid

We’ll never know what level Gretzky would be playing at if he developed in today’s game but certainly better than he did in his time. And visa versa… but I find it extra insane what McD is doing in today’s game. Where people wear helmets and stuff. Where goalies are way way better, and where d men actually play solid d. He’s for sure the best all around o man. I’m an only Avs fan and Mack is super special. Maybe even more fun to watch 50% of the time but McD just has something special. Like the ability to slow time down 25% or something. Where Nate’s magic wand only does 20%. And he seems to see a full second of two into the future. Like he can see the play that’s about to happen but this only happens like 10-20% of the time hah

Nate is an exceptional player. In my opinion he's the second best player in the world, and he has been for a few years now. He'll be a first ballot hall of famer and one of the icons of a generation. He will end up on lists of "the 100 greatest players in NHL history". He might even end up in the top half of those lists. You're incredibly lucky to have him on your favorite team. But Connor McDavid stands clearly above. He's so obviously the best player in the world, it's actually ridiculous to watch. It's been that way for years now. He's already pushing to be considered maybe the 5th greatest player in history, trailing only the obviously Mt. Rushmore of NHL greats (Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, Howe). It's not crazy to think that he could surpass some of them if he has a long enough, healthy enough career ahead of him.

1200 points over 6 seasons i can keep going cause you guys will keep finding excuses wayne never finished 3rd in scoring in his prime only outscored 2nd place by 70 points numerous times eben outscoring mario by 70 in one season also wayne at 33 years old equaled this years 27 year old mcdavid playoff stats as a king theres a reson they dont post playoff totals with number of games cause they dont want to show connors 1.89 vs waynes 2.6 in their best playoff season

Where was McDavid the first 3 games? That's when he was needed the most. Scoring 4 points during non-elimination games is the real mark of a superstar. McDavid showed up 3 games late for work, and is now playing like a desperate man.

performer? no, the list is long that is in front of him, since I have been watching the finals, 1980 onward, there have been numerous goal tenders just as a start that have basically taken a team on their back and won, then there is the stifling defense years in the middle zone that some players excelled at...this list also includes mind boggling Penguins years of playoff runs where Mario was unconscious..., so, no, not greatest performer of all time

I don’t think this goes past 6 games, especially considering how well the Panthers played at the end of game 5, but I do think McDavid deserves the Conn Smyth regardless of who wins the series unless Bob has a 50 save shutout to win the cup or something crazy like that.
