The Highland Clans were not always fighting, as you suggested. They were mostly farmers and were more worried about their crops and livestock. Sure, they did have their disagreements but mostly lived in peace. The Glencoe massacre was carried out under the orders of the government because the McDonalds were late in pledging allegiance to William III.

Robert Campbell of Glenorchy was the commander of the Government troops billeted on the MacDonalds. He delayed carrying out the order as long as possible and only did so when night and a snowstorm would prevent any escapees from being tracked. He had forced to join the Army when his clan lands had been bankrupted in repeated raiding by MacDonalds from Glencoe. He was also son-in-law of MacIain of Glencoe, chief of the clan...

Cameron chief Ewan bit throat out of a redcoat, said it was sweetest ever bite. Chieftains main man was a sennachie who would recite hos clans glories. The Cameron war cry in English. Its infamous mainly because of the fact that the Campbells accepted the hospitality before carrying out the Kings orders and killing them in their sleep. That kind of thing was a no-no under the old clan code. It was also one clan betraying another. You face your enemy, you dont kill them in their sleep. I'm not sympathetic with the '45 rebellion. Both English and Scots struggled to keep our freedoms against the Stuart dynasty. In 1745 there was the last fling of the Stuart dynasty - backed by the tyrannical and undemocratic old French regime - invading England as well as Scotland. The majority of Scots were Protestant and opposed Bonnie Prince Charlie. The authorities got a bad fright, though, and overreacted, being unnecessarily cruel to the Highlanders afterwards. Incidentally, Bonnie Prince Charlie died without legitimate children, and was succeeded in his claims by his brother, a Roman Catholic Cardinal, Henry Cardinal York, who, at the end of his life found himself penniless because of the French Revolution. By an act of extraordinary kindness, George III enabled him to live with a small pension. The result was that on Cardinal York's death, he'd arranged to send the family jewels to George III, thus tacitly making him his heir. So at the Coronation to come, notice that in the No 2 cown, the Imperial State Crown, the Stuart Sapphire, one of those jewels, is at the back.

I am a descendant on my mother's side of NE Scotland and proud of it. My DNA shows 52% Scottish, so by right, I can claim to be part of a clan. That would be the Rose clan, as the family name of Barron was a Sept of the Rose clan. A Sept is when they are linked by marriage or just choose to follow a bigger clan for protection and swear an oath of allegiance to the clan. As far as I can find out, the clan was not involved in wars and not at Culloden. Most of the eastern side of the Highlands was predominantly Protestant and therefore supported the King.

Nothing whatsoever to do with clan Campbell. There were only a handful of the troops who were Campbells. The victims were McIans. A sept of McDonald. Enough here with limited space. If you want to get the most accurate versions of this issue and many more historical Scottish events you should subscribe to Bruce Fumey.

Hi there, PhD Politics student from and currently in Scotland. The reason why the McDonald massacre is remembered is because the McDonald clan in Glencoe were for the majority a peaceful farming clan, and the Campbells in turn were a militia clan out for hire. It weny against everything the clan code between clans stood for. You would always give the opponent their good grace to fend for themselves you see. There was really not as much inter-clan fighting at this point because the clans were unified as being Scottish. The fact that the Campbells misled the McDonalds, took their bread and butter and had their supper, to then turn on their own kin while they were in their beds, is why it's remembered. Off course that's not the case now it's just a surname, but that's why it is remembered.

The Glencoe Massacre was not simply inter-clan rivalry. And it wasn't the Campbells who carried out the massacre. It was one of the first strikes in the Jacobite war, an ongoing civil war which would reach its climax fifty years later at the Battle of Culloden. The clan chiefs were told to swear allegiance to the new Protestant king William of Orange, who had deposed the Catholic King James VII (grandfather of Bonnie Prince Charlie, as explained in the video). The Chief of the MacDonalds missed the deadline, so it was decided to make an example of them. The order for the massacre came from the king himself. A company of Redcoats from the Earl of Argyll's Regiment of Foot (a Scottish regiment, because this was before the Union with England of 1707), under the command of Robert Campbell of Glenlyon, arrived in Glencoe and were billeted with the MacDonalds. They enjoyed the Macdonald's hospitality for a fortnight before the order came through to put their hosts to death. Some of the soldiers couldn't stomach it and warned the MacDonalds, otherwise the death toll would have been much higher.

what made the massacre at Glencoe particularly atrocious was it was a violation of the highland clan tradition of hospitality. The Campbells and MacDonalds had history of hostility to one another, but highland custom of the time was food and shelter should be offered to any visitor who requested it (even if an enemy). Thus the MacDonalds gave shelter and food to the Campbells for 2 weeks before the Campbell troops attacked them in their beds. It was this violation of the highland code of hospitality by the Campbells that made this massacre so heinous that it has been remembered down the years!
@user-dz1kl6is1y

The significance of the Glencoe massacre was that MacDonald's welcomed the Campbell's into their homes, they provided them with shelter , drink and food in the depths of a Scottish winter where it would be difficult to survive without shelter,they offered them the hand of friendship . For that to be repaid by the Campbells murdering men, women and children whilst they lay sleeping in bed is beyond treachery it showed no honour. Clans were always fighting each other , it was not unusual but there was an honour in doing battle but the act of slaughter committed by the Campbells showed no honour or bravery and went against all that was classed as acceptable even amongst warring tribes . That is why it is still remembered today.

13:19 The main significance of the Massacre of Glencoe is that it can be added to the huge pile of sticks to beat the unfeeling English with. The same special uniqueness is somehow also attached to the enclosure of fields and the coming of the sheep which had happened in the mid-18th century in England and early 19th century in lowland Scotland with equal hardship and dispossession. 31:14 It is thought that many cultures of that era built something to mark, not death, but the start of the Sun's rise back into the heavens.

It is rememebered not because of the bnumbers but because of the offence against Highland hospitality. The Cambells were there as guests and as such were under the protection of the MacDonalds. This means the MacDonalds would have fought if necessary to protect these same Campbells (even though they were traditional enemies). These people then unleashed the ultimate abuse of hospitality in killing the very people who had welcomed them in and protected them. Adding to that is the fact that the people massacred were mainly the heads of the MacDonald clan. ALthough it was a matter between those two clans the Campbells were despised and hated iby many clkans n the highlands thereafter.

I still remember over 30 years ago now when out hiking in a Scottish valley with mum, dad and brother when the fearsome looking Scotsman came up to us walking the other way. With absolutely no preamble he asked; "Ooorye redin?" We all looked at him blankly. "OOHR ED INN?" he asked again, a little more fiercely. Fortunately after another blank silence my dad cracked the code. And told him where we were heading. "Oh yer edin" ("where are you heading" for those slow people at the back of the class) has been a phase I've remembered and used ever since. Sadly it's not a phrase you actually get to use very much. I'd love to find more such colloquial phrases to confuse people in Sothern England with. Also, the comment about training sheep made me laugh as much as any of the comedy video reactions have. That guy isn't much of a tour guide. According to the MacDonalds themselves in the ensuing court action 26 people were killed. Other people estimatred ithe figure as being 28 and 31 and other numbers the higherst of which was 38. It is generally accepted as being around 30. I expect the MacDEonalds woul;d have been exactly correct though as it was their friends and relatives who had died.

The part which was not mentioned is that all the clans were required to pledge allegiance to the King after an uprising, by a date in January the Mc Donalds were late by a few days, maybe accidentally maybe on purpose, this is why the Campbell's were instructed to kill the Mc Donalds. That more were not killed is probably because it was a fairly violent society( and unless caught actually sleeping) killing McDonalds would be tricky-even the women and children would be armed and defend themselves.

What was also not mentioned was that McDonald's letter of fealty was almost with the king at the time of the massacre. The messenger had been held up by the poor weather and arrived a couple of days too late.

Slipping from farmhouse to farmhouse? What? It's tricky slipping from farmhouse to farmhouse when travelling with an army large enough to defeat 2 separate English armies in open battle. As a description of the Jacobate campaign that isn't even as good as woefully inadequate.

Hey Connor. Regarding the famous photo of the Loch Ness monster. Do you not think it looks like an elephant's trunk? There was actually a travelling circus(which had 3 elephants) that was known to visit and perform shows around Scotland at the time that photo was taken. Take from that what you will.

McJibben Seagulls are not friends they are fiends. He missed the gateway to the highlands which is Loch Lomond. (My home).Check out The infamous Aonach Eagach Ridge - Glencoe. I did it in winter and nearly s--t myself. Once on the Ridge you are committed to the end. Better explanations can be found about Culloden. If you go onto U-tube and there is a 1960 black and white depiction of the battle and the aftermath. It's in four parts. the mass graves are just a desecration of the Victorians. I strongly advise you to see this wonderful depiction.
