McKenzie: Opposition parties, incl PA, may be giving ANC a “free pass” of 5 more years

In a potentially watershed interview, Patriotic Alliance president Gayton McKenzie acknowledges his own mistakes and says South Africa’s opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the PA, need to mature fast or they’ll hand the African National Congress (ANC) another five years after the national election in May 2024. McKenzie says his leadership team is heading off on a learning visit to Israel, a country which has had a coalition government ever since its founding 75 years ago - and is hopeful this will teach his party the importance of maturity and unity among opposition parties, as their infighting undermines their credibility. In this wide-ranging discussion, McKenzie also touches on how the Moonshot Pact could work but predicts that if the opposition doesn’t sort themselves out, the ANC will be able to retain power in 2024 by choosing between his PA and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) as potential coalition partners. Prison and politics have lot in common. They all lie to get what they want. McKenzie is no exception. As for your studies that was your achievement not McKenzie achievement. Dont follow leaders blindly. Germans followed Hitler and he gave the world war2. Over 50 million dead countries destroyed. Look at Zimbabwe and Mugabe and what he has done to Zimbabwe. Politicians are there to serve the people and the otheway round. Look at what the damage the ANC has done to S.A. Dont make politicians heros. NOT ANY OF THEM.

I keep saying to people that someone who was a criminal but has rehabilitated can potentially be a better citizen that has never committed a crime. Why? Because that "former criminal" was once in a bad position and doesn't want others to fall into that trap or those that have fallen into the trap - to try get them out. And I know he has gone to many places to try help rehabilitate people.......

I agree with you on everything except the PA. I agree that the DA should listen more to ActionSA, ACDP, and BOSA if Mmusi joins the coalition. But the PA and Gayton have proven themself to be completely unreliable, have zero principles, and are more than willing to sell out a municipality for more power. Why are you so sure he wouldn't do that on a national level? Good on the DA for not letting him back in the fold, after selling the people of Jhb and Tshwane out for a little bit of power. That's the difference, the DA has principles at its core, Gayton has none. He must crawl back to his ANC masters who he supports now (PA are in a ANC coalition in many municipalities)

You described DA more than Gayton. DA MUST have the first word and last word. DA wants ultimate power and have 0 principles when they are pressed. DA is LITERALLY taking ANC to court over the new Equity bill when the DA voted for it to begin with. Helen Zille is 72 years old and controls everything that party does, even though she is destroying that party they keep her in power because losing here would cause a power struggle within the party. PA is by no means perfect (no party is) but please lets not play this game that the DA is by ANY means a good party...They are as cut throat and ruthless as anyone else and to some degree even worse than the ANC when is comes to trying to get power.

I can't for the life of me see the DA and ANC work together. The PA can work with both but here's a problem .....If you lay with the dogs you end up picking up the flees. The ANC is a cancer and the DA is like a crocodile with it's mouth wide open; You can't tell if it's smiling at you or is it ready preparing itself to eat you up. Zille will not abandon the ANC. PA-IFP-ACTION SA must be very careful, I doubt Zille will opt for a minority coalition instead of majority coalition with the ANC, she says all the time that coalitions with more 2 parties are recipe for disaster.

With my experience she's correct. I can work with one person but when you have more you have to much ideas. We were four artisans changing out a cylinder, two connecting points , two artisans on each side. We were not able to see what happened on the other side but we tried to communicate with each other. Each side demanded a charge without giving the other a charge eventually it just got to dangerous and I stood back. I will not support the DA if they want to work with the ANC.

It would be foolish to think the PA have the same goal i.e to remove anc from power. In several municipalities they have voted with/for the anc. They even reneged on a signed agreement to join the anc. This is not a party to be trusted.

I hope someday we will realize that the main issue in this country is to try to Nationalize a Multi Cultural society. Our value system will never be the same and the past always come to haunt us at some point. Whether black vs White, Black vs Black or White vs White. democracy and Nationalism hasn't been easy personally enjoy being in a diverse environment i love the fact that I experience the creativity of nature up close than reading or seeing other people through technology because I truly love nature and everything nature has created. But the are alway those who love the opposite who see things differently and always would Sabotage the efforts of a Nationalism of Multiple Cultures. Good interview. It will be interesting to see if Gayton Mckenzie picks up any flack for going to Israel. This may impact the PA, especially in the WC, where there is a large Muslim community. Foreign politics is a major talking point in SA, and that is probably where the ANC has an advantage over other political parties. The ANC has (1) always supported the Palestinian course, (2) is a close friend of China and Russia,(3) is a member of BRICS, (4) is also currently driving he BRICS agenda of a multipolar world, with reduced USA hegemony (5) has maintained a certain principled stance in the UN on many debates, even though they came under immense pressure from the USA and other neocolonial countries. There is currently no other party in SA, that offers that type of policy. This is what the opposition parties need to understand, if they want to beat the ANC. Parties that stick to the neocolional approach will battle to get a majority in SA.

Good point. The problem is that foreign policy and polarizing international issues are a distraction. Most opposition parties claim to be focusing on issues that affect South Africans on the ground, but often do so with an attitude that suggests a particular stance on international politics, eg. the PA and Action SA policies on foreigners echoing certain far-right tendencies in Europe. I do believe however that most South Africans that are suffering from ANC failures couldn't give a hoot about international politics until their immediate needs are met. Ideology looks good but it doesn't feed people, fix potholes and end loadshedding.

Not sure if I have this wrong but: Accepting that, depending on results, there will be multiple forms of potential coalitions that could happen in 2024 (remember there'll be independents in the mix too - although I'm not 100% sure how this will work at National Political level🤔....). Anyway here's the problem which no one seems to be talking about yet: Once any coalition is formed after the election results the bigger problem is that unless that very first governing coalition (possibly even if it by some miracle excludes the ANC and the EFF) that comes out of the election is rock solid stable and watertight in terms of ethics, loyalty and principles that speak to service to ALL the people of S.A., is it not true that it in itself could collapse at any time when some or other faction within a coalition partner becomes disenchanted or secures a better backroom deal with someone else? Given the infighting we see now already and the immaturity, backroom deals and never ending, dime a dozen motions of no confidence, S.A. could for the forseeable future (read: years!) go through rinse and repeat cycles of new governments every bloody 5 minutes! Not intending to be a prophet of doom by any means but if the elected office bearers don't get their sh*t together and form bonds of trust and act ethically we're in for a torrid time even after an election which somehow sees the back of the ANC, surely?🤔

It’s not about hatred for each other. It’s about policy, what’s best for the people in SA, then what’s the best way to put SA back on the map. It’s about listening, first of all, then debating the issue in an intelligent meaningful way. Try to be civilised in the debate, and vote. Everyone needs to have a damn good look at yourselves, if DA aligns with the ANC I think they will lose in a way that will knock their socks off. In the scheme of things, South Africa needs to lift its game, for the saviour of a nation so come together with the rule ……… we only talk about policy. Any personal issues can only be discussed privately in time that is not paid for by the people. You need a speaker who will make sure that, policy is the name of the game.
