I remember visiting this park several years ago. It was in the winter-time so no swimming, but all the trails were well maintained and a peaceful hike. Also, my son in law proposed to my daughter at this park during a hike.

The park does a great job maintaining the trails. How’s the park during the winter? We went over the weekend and it was packed. That’s awesome on the proposal, did he propose by the falls?

@@MrSTravelQuest To be honest, I don't remember a whole lot about that trip, it was maybe seven or eight years ago. And I think we went during the week so there were not very many people there. Also, a lot of the park was closed off for repairs from an earlier flood, but the parts that were open we're very welcoming do visitors, if I remember right why we went during the week was to get away from all the hustle and bustle and just have a peaceful get away. I believe he proposed to her right above the rock shelter trail, that large area of flat rock.

@@paulmilsaps4476 I seen some footage of how the falls look after it rains. I can see why they would close some areas of the park. The Rock shelter area a perfect spot to propose.

I am learning that Texas State Parks considers any camera more powerful than a cell phone a professional camara, and that photography with such cameras on their property constitutes a "media production". This means that any serious hobbiest, birder watcher, or what have you will need to get written permission from the Texas State Parks to take pictures/video 90-days in advance. I am curious if anyone else has run across this before and what happened.
@MrSTravelQuest
@MrSTravelQuest 2 жыл бұрын
Any thing that’s considered low impact (single shooter) you won’t need a media pass. The only park that requires a permit is Longhorn Cavern. You see plenty of folks recording on DSLR in the parks. For more info check out there page: tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/park-requests-application

@@MrSTravelQuest I am trying to get more detail. I recently spoke to my legislator about it who responded with this "[TPWD] noted that if it is more professional that simply recording on a cell phone it requires coordination with the agency" followed by references to it being a "media production". Most Texas State Parks are wonderful about photography. McKinney state park, however, ordered me not to take pictures or film 5 minutes after I started. I like Texas state parks. I have had great experiences taking pictures, but now I am a bit scared that a long road trip may lead to disappointment. It sounds like the parks you highlighted are a bit more reasonable though. Thank You for the information.

@@chasethebluedot what’s your camera rig looking like? I know I try to carry light when hiking on the trails. Gimbal with dslr, I had great success shooting with out any issues. My understanding is that you can film as long as it’s not a major production. Most of the parks I traveled to were pretty cool with me filming. The only park I couldn’t get permission from was Longhorn Caverns, you have to pay a fee to rent out the space. I hope you venture out and check out the amazing parks we have here in Texas 😊

@@MrSTravelQuest It depends on what I am photographing or filming. I am more on the fine art side...flowers, trees, scenery, etc. I hear you on the weight. For the trails, I use a Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. It is light and portable. It is only a 4/3, so does not get the crispness I like. For places I can hike in less than a mile, I sometimes take my Blackmagic Design USRA Mini 12K. It is heavier, but oh my God, the colors are fantastic. My wife usually takes the stills...mostly Nikon. She just picked up a Nikon Z9 the other day, so I cannot wait until we see what that thing can do. I tend to take my passions a bit more serious than most. :D When out at the parks, I do not shoot with gimbals or stabilizers. I use a tripod, but I can stabilize most clips at home depending on what I am doing. I haven't had any issues previously too. I have been traveling full time for nearly 6 years, and this was the first. I often have park staff point me toward the best places for photography/videography. I am curious to know if this was just McKinney Falls State Park, or if it happens at other parks. So far, I think my experience was unique....the one off. It has certainly made me fear the state parks. I am planning my fall and winter travel, so I have been asking around to see what other parks are like before I decide to go. Anyhow, it was the TPWD HQ (hearsay) that said anything above a cell phone was considered a professional camera. I wonder if the connection is Austin, perhaps some arbitrary boundary like a region, district, or sector that is managed by a different office. I have sent a flurry of emails trying to get something...anything...to explain it. The only reply was after I got frustrated and sent something to my legislator. (BTW, Texas legislators are fantastic.) Anyhow, I suppose it will be a while before I feel 100% comfortable photo/filming in the parks. I thank you for the information tonight. It helped a lot.

@@chasethebluedot if you have time check this article out (www.nps.gov/aboutus/news/commercial-film-and-photo-permits.htm) There has been changes to requiring us to get a permit in National Parks. Long story short, it's considered restriction of our freedom of speech (expression). We can film and photograph in National Parks without permission. State parks I have had great success filming and talking to staff. In my personal experience the staff has been encouraging and helpful. I walked in with my gimbal, mic and dslr ready to roll. I learned in more crowded spaces I switch to my action camera. How do you like using the Blackmagic 4k? I almost purchased that camera, but decided to get the GH5. I am with you about taking the hobby more series. I love the quality the GH5 brings. I thought about purchasing a Nikon for photography since I heard excellent things for nature photography. The only thing I can say is always ask the parks if your unsure. I've been to half of the Texas State Parks and never had any issues. The only park that said I couldnt film in was Longhorn Cavern. They said I would have to rent the space and get a media permit. I'm saving that park for last. Good luck on your adventures and look forward seeing your future videos. If you have any questions let me know. Happy hiking and safe travels!
