McLaren's LEAKED Suspension System for 2022

So it’s looking like there could be more changes this year than we thought.
Pull-rod suspension could be back! And, in case you didn’t know - thats a fairly different system to the push-rod system that has been on the front of the majority of cars since about 2010.
So why is it back? And what will it change for the new cars?
Well, as ever, we’ve got Scarbs back to explain - oh, and he was one of the first to spot this system in the back of McLaren’s social media footage - that’s a story that needs explaining.
Thanks so much to Craig Scarborough for joining us, go follow him on twitter - @ScarbsTech - / scarbstech
---
So here’s the story. Obviously, none of the teams want to reveal ANYTHING about their new cars yet - as it would give away potential secrets to the other teams - and with the season still a little way away - a competitor could copy (sorry, ‘take inspiration’) and get it working on the car for the first race.
But Mclaren have been braver than most, posting images of very close up stuff - or footage with the car hidden.
But Scarbs spotted a couple of things that gave it away - and it was interesting to watch it all play out on Twitter.

Red Bull will go to live axle and leaf springs because Newey says that'll allow for tighter packaging and better aero. Aston Martin is moving to focusing on SUVs and they want their F1 car to reflect that so they're going to give it a 4" lift. Ferrari's new F1 will be so exclusive and low in production numbers that the F1 team will only get their hands on one for the last 5 races, after their more wealthy preferred clients have received theirs. And they'll choose to not put any more miles on it after 2 races so it won't lose resale value.

I would suggest thinking about how the weight of the car goes to the tire as an easier way to see the difference between push- and pull-rod: - Does the car pushes it's weight down towards the wheels? Push-rod! - Does the car's weight 'hangs' between the wheels? Pull-rod! Or as you'd learn in first year engineering: If the car's body moves down under load (gravity, downforce, turning) and the wheels stay fixed, do the ends of the diagonal rod get PUSHed towards eachother (compression) of PULLed away from eachother (tension)?
@joostin123
@joostin123 2 жыл бұрын
0 difference. It's fundamentally the same system. Wishbones and rods always act in compression and tension no matter if push or pull rod

I wonder if there's a possibility of the pull rods hidden within the nose also activating any extra performance tweaks under high or low loads with the wheels in a straightened or turned position? Like the rear suspension drop Mercedes has mastered last season. Perhaps something similar that could drop the front end a little more on high speed straights?

Mercedes rear suspension drop also caused deliberate vortexes to inhibited the cars behind - to me this was cheating as it came under the rules which prevent interfering with another competitors' car. Although this was deemed to be legal last year (politics in action), this year any device designed to deliberately disturb the air behind a car or has the effect of unnecessarily disturbing the air behind a car is now banned. If anyone gets this wrong, they could see themselves missing races whilst they fix it.

I think this is for another reason, if you see the last years the teams are copying mercedes try to moving the triangles down, because this decrease the hight of roll center point CIR bellow CG center this mean when the cars turns it rolls outside closing the external part of the diffuser (like mercedes in suzuka picture) also the helps with the suspension fixing point helps to roll using the steering, for this they have mor clear space at top, now is in the opposite way to make the diffuser works need to stay parallel to ground as possible, for that the arms need to stay upper in this case the CIR can be at same point like gravity center bring a neutral roll car at turn's, and the diffuser will be seal more time, in this case they will get more space in the bottom of the double wishbone and for this they changed the suspension

As a simpler method to illustrate the difference between push- and pull-rods, consider how the car's weight is distributed to the tire: - Is the car's weight pushed down towards the wheels? Push-rod! - Is the weight of the automobile 'hanging' between the wheels? Pull-rod! If the car's body goes down under load (gravity, downforce, turning) but the wheels stay constant, do the ends of the diagonal rod get PUSHed towards each other (compression) or PULLed away from eachother (compression)? (tension)

It's such a seriously phenomenal amount of logistical planning, physical work and ingenuity is involved. Just for "moving the circus" around. The teams even have individual people responsible for specific parts and sections of the car. Prepping them, putting stickers on them, categorising and storing them. I do feel for the engineers and mechanics that are "on the road" though. As they are working 7 days a week (and all night sometimes too) just to get these cars ready for someone to spin into the wall in P1. Sometimes you can see the visual pain in the mechanics faces in the garage when it happens like that.

Yeah push or pull doesn’t matter too much you can pretty easily get the same rough function for the force at any displacement and control or optimize how responsive or dampened the suspension will be, its the more wonky functions of displacement that is the real optimization problem I guess, thats a-bit harder than a simple torsion bar hooked up to a push or pull rod, but wether it is a push or pull rod really doesn’t matter too much, don’t see how it could. hope the racing is good anyway, that lando comment could be different when they figure out setups and get to do some work on the cars and drive them for a bit. Last time there was a change of any significance it was just a massive beefing up of the cars, these are really different cars this year so I don’t really think we know anything quite yet :p we’ll see testing times and how the drivers feel then eventually

One of the major change in 2022 regulation is the active use of underbody to generate downforce which is a completely opposite principle of 2021 cars which also leads to an opposite solution to control forces applied to suspensions now coming more from below the car and less from the top through the wings

It’s downforce either way 🤷🏻‍♂️

In 2014 the Ferrari SF14T ran Pullrod front suspension and that car was a bit of a nightmare. Theoretically there is no difference, but from a driving point of view the different geometry and load points effect how a driver sets up and drives a car. Cars aren’t driven in a lab, and CAN feel the difference. Its not night and day but it makes it difficult to balance the rest of the car around it too. Every car thats ran it recently since 2010, has had issues, yes it not the only problem but its at the front- so it clearly used to be a problem - I hope the teams have good work arounds, but we me never know because there are so many other new changes, that it wont be the only issue

It was completely omitted but IMO the main problem with ferrari pullrod was compliance. The more the rod is level the more the forces are multiplied and the displacement of rod is lower because of simple lever geometry. For example think of pull rod that for wheel displacement of 25mm moves 4mm vs pushrod that would move 10mm (applies to that F1 nose configuration). Small backlash in system and material tension will have bigger effect in the pullrod design. So you need stronger materials and less backlash in the joints which comes with its price and weight. I think ferrari went with that pullrod to extreme.

Like it was mentioned in another comment, the Lego version of the 2022 McLaren F1 Car is on the Lego website under their techic series. I would think it’s fairly accurate suspension wise ?

With this push/pull rod suspension, can they electronically change the degree of camber of the front wheels whilst driving of at all, I know it can be altered manually. It would probably be against regulations to have the system do that, which could also stiffen the suspension through using electronic, electromagnetic, steel infused oil dampeners, but that'd be against regulations too. Can a double push/pull rod system in one combined system, so each assembly does both.
@tyler_bt3326

Nah, that would count as active suspension which as you guessed correctly is banned. On top of that, the regulations limit teams to conventional sprung suspension, pneumatic systems are no longer allowed

Using the pull rod will generate more pressure on the floor helping the air flow through the Venturi tunnels.

Also I would say it provides a more stable front end which keeps a more consistent air flow for the floor. The more the front end moves under braking and acceleration the more the airflow benief the car is disturbed

We've seen Haas try to move as much wait as forward as they can because of the removed aero parts of the car. Maybe having a heavier front and a bit lower center of gravity could help solve this issue? I'm talking about the Mercedes aerodynamic department guy that made an analysis on the Haas 2022 car.
