Basically Gowther was made to be the replacement for the original demon Gowther who was one of the ten commandments. However after the demon's death he wandered around aimlessly until he stumbled across the sister of the king. The two fell in love but the girl had a terminal illness and passed away which left Gowther so devastated he used his powers on himself, erasing his memories and emotions.

to be fair about Diane loving Meliodas King wiped her memory of their past at that point so she didn't remember king or his feelings for her until later, and thus was crushing on Meliodas since after the memory wipe he was the first non giant to be nice to her

In Diane's defense she lost her memory of King and their promise to each other when he left for reasons and after shooting that flower dart at her that caused her to pass out. It wasn't until later in like the second season before the third season with the commandments that she remembered or was remembering. And the two didn't officially get together till some where in the third season. I gotta rewatch the third season but a lot was going on in it. Also when Diane first met Meliodas he not only stood up for her but complimented her. In her current state it felt like the first and nicest thing that's ever happened to her so her blooming crush on Meliodas would start from their first meeting.
