Elvis Presley's "IF I CAN DREAM" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5Ogg8KVqMvSenU.htmlsi=8lL-UbDFgk7A_ycx From his 68 Comeback Special, was Elvis's Heartfelt and Powerful Tribute to Dr Martin Luther King Jr, after his Assasination in Memphis Tennessee where Elvis Lived. It is Based on the message of MLK's "I Have A Dream" Speech, and was written for him with this in mind. It also honored the Memory of Robert F Kennedy, who was also Assasinated during the same time period. This was a Turbulent Time in America, 🇺🇸 with the Civil Rights Movement, Protests and Riots against Vietnam War and it seemed as if the Country was being torn apart and Elvis wanted to bring a Message of Hope and Unity to the Nation. "If I Can Dream" is at it's heart, a Civil Rights Song.

20 years before auto-tune was invented, you had to be able to sing, live, or you might as well go sing in your shower. He was getting over a head cold, his mum was there, this was live on telly, the musos were next door. This also resonated with soldiers overseas at the time. The original song was about a prisoner, time was flowing by and he was hoping his woman was waiting for him. Soldiers toldteir girls, listen to Bobby Hatfield, he's saying what I feel.

The song was originally written for the movie "Unchained" (1955). In the film, the principal character was in prison awaiting the end of his term when he could be release. But his longing to be with his woman was so strong, he battled within over whether to attempt to break out of prison to try to be with her. That's what the song is about. The longing for a love lost to the distance between them.

We loved and respected the Righteous Brothers back in the day. Every one of their records were spectacular. Now you must hear Bill Medley’s soulful bass- baritone in such songs as You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling, Soul and Inspiration, Brown Eyed Woman, and Night Time is the Right Time, to name a few, Bill is still performing today! Bobby passed away in 2003. Such great voices!

They aren't blood brothers and their names are Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley. This song was originally written for a movie in 1955, 10 years before this performance. It was a little known prison movie titled "Unchained" and the song is about the prisoner hoping his love would wait for him. The lyrics, "time goes by so slowly" are definitely a reference to serving time. The movie wasn't well known and other singers tried the song but no one could make it popular until Bobby Hatfield made it forever his. No one else comes close to his version.

The incredible vocals of the late great Counter Tenor Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. Performed (59) years ago back in 1965 on the Andy Williams Show. This (live) performance by the NBC Studio Orchestra and the singing of Bobby Hatfield. Has been considered by many as the greatest live performance ever in the history of television. The arrangement by the NBC Studio Orchestra of the Andy Williams Show. Of music composers Alex North who wrote the music for Unchained Melody back in 1955 for the prison movie "Unchained." Is the version every orchestra and band has used ever since. Add one of Rock & Rolls greatest Counter Tenors in Bobby Hatfield. And you get an instant classic that will live forever. Great reaction to the most likely reacted to song ever on You Tube.

You are very welcome. The Lyrics to "Unchained Melody" was written by Hy Zaret. He lived to be 100 years old. The song was about a minimum-security prison in Chino California. For prisoner who will be getting out soon. They were not living in cells but in open air dormitories. They were not (chained) up, and many were there for non-violent crimes. As a prisoner all they have is time to reflect and think about their loved ones they left behind. 'Time goes by so slowly and Time can do so much."-Hy Zaret@@MDreeezy

They were called Blue Eyed Soul and loved by every colour woman. I grew up to this. This was recorded over 670 times world wide including Elvis. No one can touch Bobby’s version or hit those notes at the end with just a little microphone. Bill is the deeper voice and really great. Listen to them singing I’ll Never Walk Alone or You’ve lost that Loving Feeling together. The music is timeless and use in movies like Ghost. We have one just them in Australia. He had number one albums in 5 decades. Thank you.

Old guy here. I agree with your analysis of the metaphor about love. Songs from the 50-60s, my young days, were more about the longing, loneliness, breaking up and renewal. Men can still be a man and show tenderness and love.

It helps to remember that at the time this music came out, young men were being drafted to fight in the Vietnam war. This song represents the loneliness and anguish of parting, and the uncertainty of ever coming home--or of coming home to find the one loved has "moved on" and found someone else.

Their live performances were amazing, their vocal capabilities individually were phenomenal, and their voices together were incomparable. Some of their songs will knock you out of your socks when they let it rip; they will have you dancing and sometimes laughing when you see the old black & white videos live from the weekly Shindig Show. Unchained Melody: Bobby Hatfield live performance. The Andy Williams Show- Episode #4.5 Episode aired: Monday, Oct 25, 1965: Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. *In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and before he left he said, 'No, I can do it better. ’And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof." Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’. Also: Bobby Hatfield live performance of “Unchained Melody “ on the TV show “Shindig” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rq95qbuK1JutfqM.htmlsi=OmBVdie7xz-GPuIh

Excellent video, thanks for letting it play. Your comments are to the point 👍. The song first appeared in a 1955 movie. A Black inmate longs for his release, he dreams to reunite with his gal… He pines: « Woah, my love, my darling I've hungered for your touch » He despairs: « A long, lonely time And time goes by so slowly And time can do so much« He fears: « Are you still mine ?» He fantasizes and yearns in his dreams: « Lonely rivers flow To the sea, to the sea To the open arms of the sea, yeah Lonely rivers sigh "Wait for me, wait for me" I'll be coming home, wait for me » He tells her how much he needs her to love him back. « I need your love I need your love God speed your love to me« The song was nominated for an Oscar (15 nominations for its composer, Alex North). In 1955 three different versions appeared on the Top 10 Charts. It was adapted countless times and interpreted by Elvis Presley, U2, the Platters and just about everybody else…

In 1955, it was the theme song for a prison movie, "Unchained"

This song is about a prisoner singing about his lady love and hoping that she has been faithful and will be there for him when he comes back home. I truly think this is the best live performance of a song I have ever heard. It’s better than the studio version!

That was the movie; however, the lyricist, Hy Zaret, refused to put anything about prison in the song. By "sticking to his guns," he contributed to a song for the ages. Anyone/everyone separated from a love one can relate to it. It isn't stuck in some minor genre. Bobby's version is from the middle of the Vietnam war and is dear to the hearts of many from that time. I've read he dedicated it to the guys serving there.

To understand the lyrics you need to know this song was written for a low budget prison movie in 1955 called “unchained”.

If you want to hear them together try "You Lost That Loving Feeling" , " Soul And Insperation" of the 60s or Rock 'N';Roll Heaven from the 70s. And it is Bill Melody (Deep Voice) and Bobby Hatfield whom you just heard. ❤😮
