I met a woman once that could not afford the surgeries to have the excess skin removed after losing pretty much an entire person worth of weight. Her doctor put her in touch with the closest hospital with a burn unit and she was able to get her surgeries free by donating her skin for skin grafts. A woman who worked with her was saved at a different burn unit after her abusive ex boyfriend lit her on fire, she would have died if someone else had not donated their excess skin. There are ways for those who don't have the money to get those surgeries and it winds up helping the person who donates their skin as well as potentially helping many others.

It's very much dependent on the particular insurance. Some of them won't cover basically anything that falls under the umbrella of plastic surgery. Some will, but you have to wade through their moat, wrestling alligators, and then have a wizard's duel with numerous adjustors. I was fortunate that my breast reduction was covered - I only needed to pay my remaining deductible - but there are plenty of women who can't get it done because of their insurance's rules.

But one thing he always said to me growing up was that getting insurance to cover needed surgeries was about "wording things just right" and "knowing how to play the game." He said that the only reason he got several of his surgeries was because he knew how to make things sound just serious enough that insurance HAD to cover it but without actually lying.

I'm very worried of being stuck in loose skin just like this woman if I manage to lose this weight... especially if I turn out to have a suspected condition that's treatable and I could end up losing weight rapidly. I'm 27 and I've never had a body I liked and the pride and joy of finally having a healthy weight would not be felt if my progress was covered by loose skin. Even when fat I am OK with wearing shorts, dresses and showing my arms but having loose skin everywhere would be a nightmare because I'd want to cover up head to toe and I easily overheat. Even though I'm Canadian and thus a lot of my medical stuff is covered by the government, skin removal surgery is not covered as its considered cosmetic unless the loose skin is so severe it makes walking difficult.

I’m so sorry to hear about your concerns. The truth is that my mother was in a very similar situation a few years ago - she was always heavy-set growing up despite having the same diet and habits as her extended family who did not have weight problems. Then a few years ago she developed a necrosis in her intestines and had to have surgery - but after the necrotic tissue was removed and she adapted to her new dietary requirements, she lost weight very quickly, and had a lot of issues with loose skin. She was able to get the removal surgery, but even then it was a difficult few weeks, what with the pain and the regular drainage… but she was much happier when it was all said and done. I hope that if you do end up getting the treatment for your condition and lose the weight that your insurance doesn’t abandon you halfway.

Amanda, yours is a valid concern. In my later 30s, I lost 100 lbs - on my own, no surgery - and I was hoping that I wouldn't wind up with much loose skin since I didn't rush it and went at the rate of 1-1.5 lbs/week. Unfortunately, it didn't work as well as I'd hoped; I still wound up with some loose skin on my upper arms, stomach, and thighs. It was a bigger deal to me than to anyone else, but body dysmorphia is an awful funhouse mirror; I loved how I looked fully dressed, but would never wear shorts or even a one-piece swimsuit. Skin elasticity depends on a number of factors which include age, your skin condition, and your own genetic makeup, but it's impossible to predict how much or little extra skin you could be left with. I hope you don't let that stop you, though; ultimately, being at a healthier body weight is important for your overall health. I hope there is a way to have extra skin taken care of if you need it. (You really might not need it, you know; you are very young, and the odds of your skin tightening up on its own are pretty good.) Good luck! ❤

@@sweetdkinkycurls Thank you! Mine is an interesting story (even if only to me, lol): I had a heart attack at the age of 37. I was indeed overweight, but never smoked or drank, and had absolutely no weight related health concerns. (Low blood pressure and normal cholesterol) My doctor, hospital cardiologist, and several specialists I'd been sent to see after were completely stumped. There was no follow-up treatment, and the only suggestion I'd heard was, "Well, continue to take care of yourself". (Very helpful, isn't it?) Nevertheless, since no one could definitively tell me that my weight didn't cause the heart attack, I came home from the hospital afraid to eat. I'd drink a glass of water and wonder if that was the end. As a single mother of three, two of them still at home, I REALLY wanted to make sure I was going to be there for them! Anyway... before I even realized it, I was 15 lbs down. And then another 10. By the time I "graduated" to salads, it felt like an indulgence! After that, I learned about portion control, as well as the little tricks like using small plates, and the weight just kept coming off. It finally came to 135 lbs, my normal and comfortable weight, and leveled off. I had no trouble maintaining it until peri-menopause, but then I lost it again after. That's about it. Oh, and six months after I had the heart attack, class action lawsuits started appearing en masse against the manufacturer of my previous birth control pill, Yasmin. Apparently, they were aware that it could cause heart attacks in young, non-smoking women - but chose to keep the information to themselves. Profits were more important to them.

As someone who did medical billing for many years. I can say it is a mountain atop an even bigger mountain to accomplish, but you CAN get insurance to pay for some surgeries deemed ‘cosmetic’. The circumstances have to be juuuust right, but it happens. Example: a woman suffering a genetic disorder that caused her breasts to grow abnormally large was having med issues because of them. Injured shoulders from wearing a bra and carrying the weight, back issues galore, skin chronic skin infections, etc. Took two years, and about 20 flaming hoops but her reduction surgery was finally approved and she successfully unsent the procedure. She was forced to try a myriad of other, sometimes worthless, treatments. She had to go thru several long appeals, etc. The insurance company really dragged it out, hoping she’d give up. Eventually enough doctors of varying specialties had written enough letters and included copies of her extensive charts, and they gave. Hard road, but do-able

For everyone in this comment section sharing their feelings about their loose skin, please please please talk to whoever you get your insurance through. It's not well known but a lot of insurances do cover getting certain types of loose skin removal if you have lost a significant amount of weight and have kept it off for over 6 months. Not for your whole body but especially if you're dealing with extra skin around your stomach and it's causing you to have abrasions and fungal infections regularly then go to your doctor or a clinic and have them document it over several months. I know it's embarrassing, I deal with it myself, but just know that you do have options. And if you don't have insurance there are still things you can do to help manage your loose skin and there are a lot of other people who are dealing with those things right along with you. No matter what, you are beautiful and you deserve to feel beautiful in your own skin.

I think probably everyone has had at least a passing thought of hurting themselves like “I wonder what it would feel like to take a knife and put it in my stomach” and then you’re like “wait what am I thinking , ick” and you move on. That being said I wouldn’t be shocked if nearly every person on the earth has TRULY contemplated suicide at least once by the time they are 30. Some are “stronger” and able to resist and some just can’t overcome their depression and succumb to it. Stay strong, fight the good fight, you are loved. God gave His only Son because he loves you just the way you are. That being said He loves you enough not to leave you the way you are either. But you are loved. Come as you are.

Depression makes you think these things constantly, and sometimes it's so loud it's all you can think about. When my Depression was at it's worst I had to wait around in parking lots for hours sometimes because the thought to drive into oncoming traffic was so loud I was afraid I would actually follow through and do it. Intrusive thoughts every once and a while is normal, but having them all the time isn't. Thinking about suicide with no intention to follow through at least a few times in your life is normal, thinking about suicide and genuinely considering doing it is not normal and you should seek help and support. The mindset that "everyone goes through these things" is extremely damaging, I was a victim of that mindset for many years. (I do not reccomend attempting to rawdog life with no professional support if you are struggling the way that I was)

@@procrastinatorproductions3378 you expressed exactly what I was trying to. Everyone has intrusive thoughts but the ongoing depression that paralyzes and interrupts your life is different. Where you can’t get those suicidal thoughts to go away, definitely seek help. I just meant that everyone has intrusive thoughts.

Before I lost my mom from a gran mal, I was normal by America's standards. Both the during and after, I began emotionally eating. At that time, I was depressed to notice and stop. I was 12 years old at that time. During my mid-20s, I was fat-shamed by some of my relatives, so I chose to do an IF Diet which meant that I had to skip breakfast. Eventually, I would get "hangry" until lunchtime. Recently, I went to my doctor and she recommend me a keto diet. Unfortunately, my "Aunt Flo" never visited for about several months and I'm currently single. So, my doctor gave me something to help with the "visit", but the side effect is "weight gain" which caused me to hear "You looked so good before." Is "doctor's orders" more important or not?

This same thing is used against transgender people as well for surgical procedures. Just because a procedure is technically cosmetic does not mean that it is not necessary; fail that, cosmetic surgeries can often provide real demonstrable benefits to the people receiving them. So long as a doctor and/or therapist can assess that it will improve the wellbeing of the patient, be the outcomes physical or psychological, then they should be covered. Granted, healthcare should be considered a human right and ought to be covered as a social service.

I even had to change my wording up as well. Going to a doctor and telling them I’ve been TTC for years wasn’t enough for anyone to check me out.……..its not the trans woman I’m mad at, it’s the government

Literally scared to lose weight for this reason. I don't want surgery, my cousin almost died from it BUT I don't want the extra skin either. I'm trying to loose weight anyway but I'm not happy about it tbh. I figured if I get too much loose skin and hate it I can just gain some weight back until I'm healthier than my heaviest but not as flabby 🤷‍♀️ kinda sucks. It scares me but I also did this to myself.

How much do you have to weigh to be stuck with loose skin when you lose weight?
@AudreyKey9653
@AudreyKey9653 Жыл бұрын
It depends really. Skin elasticity changes as you age, so an adult could lose 100lbs and have loose skin everywhere, while a teenager could do the same and be unscathed. Other things matter too, like how much you lost vs how much you weigh, (going from 400 to 300 is very different than going from 200 to 100), and how fast you lose it. So in general, the less you weigh, the younger you are, the less you lose and how slowly you lose it, means less loose skin. If you are older, weight more, lose more and a lot faster, you would have more loose skin. But of course all of this is general, a lot of reactions are based in genetics and medications and specifics.

I hate insurance companies who play God! They decided who is worthy of treatment and who isn't! Their lines here are: "We are sorry you are suffering mentality and emotionally. But we cannot help you. Your mental health is your problem not ours. As we don't believe in mental illness." I hate this so much! 😡

Is it just me or is everything in the American system (not just medical) all about finding exceptions for the rules/laws because of how much the rules/laws actually harm people? It isn't that rules or laws are bad. But in the US they just seem so badly defined or worded.

Yes I do think it sucks. Losing all that weight. Just to have a bunch of flabby skin. The entitlement of people in this day society is getting ridiculous. No one thinks they are accountable for their own actions. It always goes like this. Nobody told me what I was doing was going to make me 500 lb. So now you need to pay for my gastric bypass to lose. Then it goes from nobody told me what I was doing would make me so overweight. To now I heard obesity is a disease but also genetic. Which either it's a disease or it's just in your genetics. Either way leads you to believe that nothing you did cause you to gain weight because of your disease. Same thing with the genetics argument. Because I am genetically predetermined to be 500 lb. That means I eat just as much or less then skinny people but just because of my genetics I become obese without overeating. So with that logic gastric bypass surgery that makes it so you cannot eat over your daily recommended amount of calories. Should not do a damn thing. Because with your genetics you already eat less then your daily recommended amount of calories and became obese. Common sense is not very common these days. Especially because so many people prefer to be told a comforting lie.
