Here at Metcalf Mills our goal is not only the preservation and education of the grain milling process, but also to help provide a service and products that help make good, healthy, fresh milled goods more available to individuals and communities. I'm stumbling upon this video rather late, although I just wanted to mention that I've found it to be very relaxing to the point of almost therapeutic, / the whole thing, ... watching you meticulously do what you love to do and watching little Charlotte, keeping busy with her busy Daddy nearby. Those are precious moments. Thank you for sharing them. Super neat!!!

This mill was as full of dirty grease as one old stove I cleaned up. Thanks for taking the time to show us you day. I love to learn something new everyday, it keeps my brain running. You and your girls have a beautiful life and are a blessing to those around you. Keep learning and then you will always have a open mind.

Vinegar is a great way to cut grease without chemicals. I learned to make my own on KZfaq. The best I’ve made for cleaning so far is from juniper “leaves.” It smells bad, but the smell goes away after a while. If you put some baking soda in it bubbles up and makes an even stronger cleaner. Vegetable oil is also great for getting out sticky junk like pine tar so it might loosen motor grease. All of the above does wonders for dried on sewing machine oil.

Enjoyed watching the break down of the Mill. It was interesting. Looks like the whole family was out to help you. They where having a great time together. It good to see them out enjoying the shop. They will always remember having fun with you. You gotta love them kids and dogs. It’s good to see that Mill put out some Yellow grits & white grits as well as mill. That was interesting, I've never seen a mill taken apart. When I was a kid our town of about 6000 didn't have little mills around like that, our loss. Pillsbury had a commercial mill here. There ain't many Daddies that would hang a swing in their shop for their little girl. You're quit the fella Justro. I'm sure your girls realize how lucky they are to have such a good Daddy. I admire your patience. I wish I could hear you when you deliver it. Whomever did the maintenance will need re-educating especially with the grease gun. Hopefully they were using food grade grease. Makes you wonder why they kept greasing the fan shaft. One half of the running stone face appeared to be worn unevenly and completely void of the grooves (forgot what they’re called.) They’re lucky to have you do the refurbishing! Thanks for the video.

Vinegar would make quick work of cleaning that fan housing and it's not toxic.

If you are content with the content then I am content with the content. Someone going grease happy on that zirk for sure. Will admit, not knowing that was a debris fan I can see someone making that mistake. Me included. You said you didn't want to use chemicals to clean the fan area even though it was already full of chemical (grease). I think I would have tried white distilled vinegar soaked in your cloth and keep changing the cloth until the cloth stayed clean on that final stage. Just an idea. Again, thanks for sharing your wisdom, brother. You are loved and appreciated. God bless your family.

I'm with Kenneth. I would have used vinegar to get that grease (a nasty chemical to ingest when it's in your corn meal) completely off the housing and the wheels. As always super informative and entertaining too. Good content!

Haha I said the same thing about vinegar before I got to read your comment. I clean almost exclusively with vinegar, baking soda or my own homemade soap for many years now.

I don't know nothing about those mills. I've used the tractor belt driven stationary feed mills. Those mills had different screen sizes we could change out. Virtually maintenance free. Eaglegards...

Use moonshine to cut the grease. It is corn so it won't harm your mill. Don't use denatured alcohol, use grain alcohol.

Use 90 proof grain alcohol or ,it would be a waste ,some moonshine would cut and dry out the grease. Draw it out of the metal pores. And food grade.

What do you do about all the lead based paint? People are eating that stuff. Must be a big business redoing all those mills getting rid of the paint and repaint? Eaglegards...
