In the olden days the grain mill was most often the “Heart” of a community. Here at Metcalf Mills our goal is not only the preservation and education of the grain milling process, but also to help provide a service and products that help make good, healthy, fresh milled goods more available to individuals and communities. And hopefully bring back some of that “Heart” and maybe a little more Love.

I was praying that he was drinking enough water and staying hydrated the whole time. Justro is one of a kind and I understand the meaning and pride he has in that wheat crop.

Excellent video. As of 10 minutes in, haven't laughed once! 😁. I let some grain, that came up in my mulch, mature one year. It was fun. I used hedge shears, which made it a lot of work. I can really appreciate the cradle you used! Fascinating video. Added it to my Growing Carbs (private playlist) so I can find it later and watch again. From what I have observed, we can grow Winter wheat here. So, planting time would be in a few months.

It was obvious on the second run that you had found your stride.. smooth, easier swings. It would have to be that way years ago to last for acres. Like a golf swing- on the first you had your hooks and slices, but the second- right down the middle so to speak. I had never seen this done by hand- in the 60’s, combines were already being used.. Great Job!

Nifty little tying technique for the bundles. As I watched you I was trying to envision anything that would make it easier ergonomically. But I couldn’t see anything obvious that would improve on the way you did it - especially after you got into a rhythm. You must have been very pleased and satisfied to grow and harvest this Red Clawson wheat that was grown by your family generations ago. As to planting locations, hillside planting will give it a ‘fog drain’, similar to planting grapes to reduce downy and powdery mildew. Preferably a south facing slope with rows parallel to the slope. Just a hunch from my grape growing days. The good Lord has answered your prayers with His blessings.

I have a scythe. I've never swung it.. lol. I harvested my tiny barley crop with a tobacco hook. Danged stuff didn't grow but a foot tall, so it was hard on my old back. The heads were less than stellar and I haven't threshed it yet. Hubby has yet to build me the thresher. I expect to get a few pounds of barley seed to plant a decent crop for next season. I've developed an enormous amount of respect for those hard working farmers of yesteryear who harvested , threshed and winnowed their entire field by hand.

Continuing the video...... you are missing a piece of equipment, I have no idea what it was called but mom said it was shaped like a capital L. Two of them just alike and they were held together with a number of dowel rod type things, ?wire?? metal bracing?? Well anyway, as your row of cut wheat is laying there you skid this L shaped gathering contraption down through there like pushing a shopping cart and your wheat will start to roll up on it self. When you get the size that suits you, tilt the front up and back it up (here I don't remember if you tied it on the thing or dumped it off for a 2nd person to tie). Hope that helps.... mom passed on or I would ask her for you.

My father used to cut our grass with a scythe and a sickle. Even though he sharpened the blade every time he felt any resistance he could be done faster than he could get out and fuel up the lawnmower. We children would gather up the hay to make dens. Happy memories.

I'm green with envy. We had a cradle sickle hung in our barn in my youth. I got it down a couple of times to cut weeds. I knew what it did, but I'd never seen it used. It didn't work too good cutting weeds. We were using a Yankee Clipper Massey Harris combine during those times to harvest our white winter wheat which is primarily used in pastries. We'd bale the straw. It was bright yellow shiny straw. Stay the course. Thanks for sharing old times. Eaglegards...

I love the skills that you present in your videos. My elderly neighbor grew up cutting wheat and hay with a American style scythe, he taught me how use it. I started buying scythes at garage sales and estate sales and even bought a 36” wheat scythe just as your using in Gatlinburg Tenn years ago. We can’t do wheat down here along the Gulf Coast except a very few varieties . I hope to some restoration videos on them.

Looks like your wheat got too wet right before harvest. A touch of "sooty mold" on the seed heads - they should be golden brown. I imagine it is tough trying to get grain to stay dry with the summer rains there in the mountains.

It was a joy to get to see you cradle this very special harvest. I'm tickled for you. I wish I could have been there to help you and Billy bundle it into sheaves. Though it looked like you had things well in hand. To my knowledge it's been about 80 years since there have been any small grains grown here on our family place. My great-grandfather used to grow oats for his stock in and amongst the roughly terraced apple trees up the hollar from his house. I hope to raise some small grains here again in the next couple years. Here's the link to one of my favourite cradling videos. I hope you enjoy it. I find something to learn from it everytime I watch. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mrekmdhmrperip8.html Thank you. My best wishes for you and the girls. -Nathan W.

Justro that was awesome job. That cradle looked like some monster from the past at first lol. But when you got the hang of it it was like walking through the park. That was neat the way to tie up the stalks but I think we all got plenty if hat string around now. I can't wait to see you finish processing it and grind some. Will your new mill be able to make flour out if this wheat .oh and how do you store it because it probably starts to lose protein once you grind I think. Awesome to get Billy helping. Keep up the good work and God bless you all
