100! Like I've always said about Page (especially his critics for being "sloppy") ya but those *compositions though*.....EVH was a maniac of a rhythm player and of course like one of his heroes, Page, an incredible composer. At the end of the day you ain't got shit if you don't have a strong song.

EVH's rhythm playing is just as good as, if not better than, his solos. I just love the crunchy sound of his guitar. Where he came up with all that stuff is beyond me.

With Eddie it wasn't really considered rhythm guitar. It was really all guitar. Michael Anthony held down a lot of the rhythm groove. This was Dubbed 2 guitar parts. But somehow Eddie Van Halen was able to pull it off in concert because of Michael Anthony's Dynamic Bass playing

Not sure if I agree with that, both he and Alex took piano lessons for years and Eddie was noted for his improvisational ability. Their dad was also a professional musician so they were certainly surrounded by music and training from a young age even it wasn’t specifically guitar related.

With every note he ( Edward ) was able to breathe life into that guitar, turning it into a creature that spit out musical fire, sound effects that growled and screamed, always with the perfect amount of tonality. 1978- 1985 was electric because of him and the original band’s chemistry. It really was a once in a lifetime experience. I’m so glad I lived it.

Eddie was a MUSICIAN. Yeah, there were other mechanics who copied the superficialities of Van Halen, but they NEVER copied the music. They were players. Eddie was/is a master musician. Nobody could write the way he did, or combine blues, swing, and classical driven by a God sent guitar tone that lived and breathed all on its own. The man will never have an equal..

Eddie was probably the hardest working guitar player ever. Not only did he usually play nonstop on every song, but he took a bunch of different sounds and combined them all into something that worked very well for whatever song he was playing on. His playing was quite complex, but it always pleased the ear.

HOW can someone give THIS a thumbs-down??? Guitar players have to hear this to know just how impeccable Eddie’s playing was. Even in his rhythm playing, Eddie was one of the most expressive guitar players who ever lived. From straight tones to pinch harmonics to muted notes, he knew exactly what nuances he wanted in all his guitar parts, and executed them flawlessly. And just think: he started out on drums and initially wanted nothing to do with the guitar. 😮

yeah, as most know Eddie would use a variac to dial down the voltage in his amps, which in turns gives less gain and a more "spongy" sound.

I've always believed Eddie, while one of the greatest guitar players ever, was equally adept at knowing how play in service to the song. His solos and lines were always in keeping with, and in service to the song. Too many times we hear about 'great guitar players' who weren't aware of the context they were playing, so their solos sounded out of place and disjointed. Eddie's playing always made sense in the song and helped elevate anything and everything he played on.

@@sp3ci4lkpo DLR ranks among some of the best frontmen ever during his prime. If you watch them live at Fresno 1978 you'll see what I mean, he really puts on a show. Although his singing voice wasn't the greatest, he was a very good lyricist for the musical ideas Eddie came up with. I agree though, Eddie was definitely the driving force for the band's success and he blew everyone away. VH together were unstoppable in the 70's

I feel that EXACT way about Dokken and George Lynch, some of those albums instrumentally are so good, but it's Don's questionable vocal choices that makes so the songs don't have any "life." All the pieces are there on paper, but it just doesn't translate. I like watching videos of George from the front row where you can't hear the singer lol.

I don't think he and his brother's timing is actually timing. It's like Van Halen time. Something not meant for baseline humans. So many off beats and the staccato's get you. They were like one person. There will never be another. Sure there are other great guitarists, but he made all of them except for a rare few, change the way they play.

I just listened to this gem again tonight for the first time since my previous post seven months ago, and the ending here is interesting to me. I know the track fades-out on the album, but here we hear his guitarwork beyond the fade-out. That it ends so abbruptly at 5.06 leaves you wanting more, and it also makes you think he could have continued-on for another 5.06 minutes. What a talent he was!

Yes. I just turned my grandson on to Eddie...just one week before... My grandson said ' he's good, Pa... You know him?' he loves watching ' the elephant sound' ed has influenced everyone... We were jamming, and and we have a track called ( 41) that I've been told sounds a little like Eddie..I hope I grabbed a hold of the vibe... It's just how we play! Thanks Eddie!

I knew eddie was experimenting with the Eventide units in fair warning but man, hearing it isolated gives you an idea on just how much fuller it makes the sound. So punchy with that slight crystal sound while maintaining the sizzle of VH1 & VH2. Pure magic

That's not effects, that's just the guitar and a cranked Plexi . Edward's effects consisted of a flanger ,phaser and an echoplex that was it for much of his career . What was so amazing about Edward was his rhythm playing was just as incredible as his lead playing . To this very day I haven't heard anybody come close to how insanely flawless he was playing rhythm.

Craziest thing is he wrote A LOT of these songs on piano. Eddie will always be the king. Like alien technology in his hands or something. Just unbelievable!

I never realized just how little guitar there is in this song. The bass and drums fill this out and make the guitar sound like there is more that is playing than there actually is.

Eddie's intro during that era in the guitar world was freakin' epic. One of thee most bad ass riffs in hard rock history too. Nobody changed the guitar world like Eddie in the '70s, since Hendrix. IMHO

Eddie was absolutely brilliant. I'm always at a loss for words listening to his mastery of the guitar. As important to the craft as Hendrix was. VH will live on forever!

When I was 18 years old, I saw him play this live on the Fair Warning tour in Charlotte, NC. FW has always been my fav VH album and tour. IMO, they were at their best on the FW tour. That was a really good show. Forty years ago? How the hell did that happen lol! Time goes by way too fast. Rest in peace Eddie. Thanks for all the great music. I made a bunch of road trips to see you in concert back in the day. Fun times.

I love these isolated guitar tracks! There are so many subtleties that are lost on the album under the bass, drums and vocals. I don't remember hearing that Eddie was a perfectionist, but now I know why he was always noodling around on his guitar in his bedroom at home, during the day and in his hotel room on the road. He was just perfecting all these fills and subtleties as much as he was working on the riffs and solos. Ed's the man!!

anyone who knows he was first a drummer, then switched to guitar can tell he's still a drummer by the percussive way he jams. It's like he's got a tiny little drum kit in his fingers. I grew up being one of the first kids in my jr high to have their first ALBUM. I had already started playing guitar but EVH got into my head and made me want to do much more. I'm not a player in his style... he taught us all to have our own style. Thanks for a lifelong love of music and the eternal quest for town in each of our own heads. Also, thank you for your gifted son. His music touches my heart and his energy makes me fell like I'm a teenager again. RIP Brother.

He jumps ahead in the timing creating a sense of urgency to the riff. It works. You hear it a lot more in this track.
