I am certain that they meant what they said, but being realists they understand they don't have power to put an end to slavery or give women rights to vote...at that time. But the equality demands that there should not be so harsh differences in economic status of people. We are beginning to be in situation where for example entertainment don't make anymore waste or use resources no matter how many copies you make. So the possibility to give everyone by their need, not meaning everyone getting the same as the needs of people vary very much, and thats why it's important to go by the need than give people what they don't need. Work should be calling and not for money, as for money makes people choose professions they don't actually like, which leads to unhappiness and stress which leads to health problems which is destructible.

there is no equality in nature. you can't find it anywhere. but, there is equilibrium in nature. when water boils, it's not steam going up, but the air pressure differential that creates the steam and bubbles. we should strive for equilibrium, not equality. whatever is the right mixture/proportionality, is right and good. It's why markets work. people find goods by meeting a price agreeable to a seller. we can't make things "equal".

As men are created equal, the children won't see eachother so different, but there comes the "trendy" parents who push their children the idea that they are better and they have to show it with clothes more valuable than ten poor childrens annual budget. That's not motivating but depressing. You can get a job and make lot's of money after that but the wounds that you are lesser person, never heals. And that makes the unity a contradiction which does not feed the creativity but suppress it.
