Measuring for a Custom Belt

Measuring for a custom belt can be a little confusing but getting a good measurement is crucial to insure a proper fit. We also require a good measurement so that any lettering, brands or figures within the artwork are balanced when the belt is being worn.

Don! Thanks for your great videos. It's obvious that you have the qualities of a great teacher .... patience, expertise, and a great desire to see your students succeed! I bought your ebook and, with reference to your diagram at the top of pg. 7, can you please give me what are the measurement between the holes (including how far in from the left to make the first one) that secure the buckle? Also on the same for the flap end? If you could add these measurements to the diagram that would really help. I have watched all your videos to catch if you make reference to that and couldn't find it. It's probably a no brainer with all the other info. you've given but I'm a slow kid that has the added challenge of being a perfectionist so it would help to have these specifics! Thanks again Don!

So, if I understand correctly, the measurement is a little different when using a trophy buckle. How does one measure for a belt to be used with a trophy buckle?

So if my belt is say an 8 oz leather belt and you are making a lined 12 or 14 oz leather belt then how much do you have to add for the extra thickness?

You say we don’t need exact buckle, you said trophy type buckle a 1.5” but some trophy buckles are quite big. Is 1.5” a general rule ya use for trophy buckles? What’s the general length I could use for other types like buckle sets? Sorry that was long but I don’t know how else to word it. Stay blessed

Hey Don, if I were making a custom belt, how many total extra inches would I add to their belt length? 7-8 on the tail and how much would you recommend on the buckle end? Also, I’m really appreciating your tutorials. It’s great to see someone wanting to help others that want to start in this trade. Would you ever be interested in filming a tutorial on making a belt start to finish?

I add a total of 10.5” to the belt measurement for my cut length of the blank. I have that type of video in my list of “to dos” so hopefully soon! Thank you so much for the support and hope you have a great week!

My belt says 44-46 and I’m trying to buy a new one!! And it doesn’t messier 44 inches or 46 inches. What size do I order to get?

Don, you’re saying add 7” on this video but then in your comments you say 10.5?? Is it now add 10.5 past the center hole? And is that for all belts? Thanks

+captfmc you add 10.5” total to the measurement they give u. 3.5” for the gold and 7” tip(center hole to end).
