Making accurate measurements and clearly marking your cut lines is essential in the workshop. In this video we look at my methods in the workshop.
A quick disclaimer: During filming the camera developed a strage fault resulting in much lower quality footage and a really strange aspect ratio. Anyway rather than waste the footage I've edited what I had together to make what I hope is an interesting video.

Great video - Thanks for the tip about the silver sharpies - will get one. I like the Edding 8850 Carpenters Pen for marking through timber etc and prefer a mechanical pencil for marking - soft lead so easy to sand away. Also use the Babco square, work great for me too. Best tape measure I've found is the metric only Stanley Fat Max - easy to mark above and below tape and tough, cheers,

Hey Bill - thanks for the feedback. I'd not come across the Edding Carpenter's Pen before and I'm going to check that out. As for the FatMax - I agree they're fine tapes - especially the metric only one. Mine's missing and I think I might have left in ceiling of the workshop. lol.

Great video, have ordered a tape like yours, it will be handy for me as I’m left-handed and I will be able to read the tape the right way up. Thank you for a great idea.

That tape measure looks great. I've been looking for a metric only tape measure for a while and having the scales on both sides looks like a great idea.

Hi Karl, Thanks for the video. I’m going to order the Crown Tools marking knife from Axminster Tools. I like the idea of a stronger blade. I’m also going to buy an auto punch. My go-to marker for wood is a simple Bic pen. Cheap to buy, it gives a thin line and never needs sharpening!

You can never have enough clamps and I don't have enough. For any woodworker, clamps are a necessity. I'll always watch a video on them if you decide to do one.

Nice videos.. Will you be decorating your walls with the French Cleat system for your hand tools? That'd be a nice 2 or 3 part video.

Hi Karl you got settled in now, bet your glad you got far more space. I have a garage as a workshop but mine is very cold and slightly damp at one side due to wall being single skinned at partial backup with next doors garden. Do you still have your Evolution fury table saw, do you think its okay? Just wondering as I am tempted to get a table saw I do have evolution mitre saw.Anyone have a merry xmas. Some great tips for stocking fillers. I got a digital caliper last year and I never stop using it now also found useful digital angle finder

I do have the evolution table saw and for the money it's a great tool. It is accurate enough and is only let down slightly by a fence which can flex if you are not careful. But to be honest if I were to start over again I'd give some thought to getting a tracksaw instead of the table saw. The Titan saw from Screwfix is fantastic value and now I've invested in a tracksaw I'm using more than the table saw.

I noticed Aldi are selling them omline perhaps some shops still have them it seems its a SCHEPPACH rebranded tracksaw

Now let's be fair here, Norm had a workshop far better equipped than most professional joiners/carpenters so he does cheat a little haha! I've got a biscuit joiner but hardly ever use it. In fact ..... Thinking about it I've got a lot of mechanics tools I hardly ever use mainly because forget I have them. That's the trouble with loads of tools, if they're in boxes you tend to forget you have them until you go to the box for something else then realise you had the perfect tool for the job you've just taken 3 hours to do that would have done it in 20 mins

Cheers Karl. Once again, some very basic - and sound - advice vis-a-vis marking et al. On a separate subject, I'm looking to buy a 'Dremel-type' rotary multi tool, but the variety on offer is a tad mind-blowing to say the least. Do have any personal experience of these and if so, what would you recommend? Don't worry; I won't hold you liable if it goes pear-shaped... ;o)

I have a basic Dremel 3000 which I got from Amazon on Prime Day in the summer. It's fairly basic but well made and I haven't any complaints. In the past I've bought a set from Aldi and another from Wickes (in the UK) and these really didn't last well at all. The Wickes one developed a terrible wobble after only a few months. The Aldi one was OK but very badly designed and heavy in the hand. It did come with plenty more accessories that the Dremel out of the box, but to be honest in all the time I had it I just tore through the cutting disks and sanding drums and ended up buying what I needed as I needed it from Screwfix - have the stuff I never used. In short, a cheaper Dremel is better value than a more comprehensive non-dremel in the long run. I hope that helps.

Thanks for that Karl. I'm a bit concerned about the Dremel inasmuch as many reviews have criticised the build quality. It seems that you can pay up to £50 (ish) and get some well reviewed devices, some with over 200 accessories. However, your comment about the quality of the accessories is well made. As I'm not looking to do a lot of work with this, just a bit of DIY when I'm pottering around, I think I might go for an inexpensive one with 5 star reviews and see how it goes. I'll let you know...

Update. I’ve finally bitten the bullet and gone with the NoCry 10/125 Professional Rotary Tool Kit from Amazon. The accessories look impressive, including a precision handle that I’ve not seen on any other tool kit. It’s well reviewed on Amazon (5 stars) and the company has good reviews all round. Due on Saturday, I’ll let you know how I get on with it.

Hey steve - sorry for the delay in answering these. Tim Sway who produces the squares had a few issues in making metric ones which dissuaded him from making a second batch. Demand was lower than for the imperial but you had to produce many at once to make it pay, and postage to europe was high. However, he does now have metric versions available on his site along with a new polycabonate 'lite' version which he laser cuts on-demand and is easier to post. Thanks for the question.
