Meat, I was 9 in 1992, when I saw the TV ads for Bat 2, the cover art and all the songs were the epitome of badass operatic coolness! I asked my dad to ask his friend to tape record the CD on a cassette for me so I could play it in my bedroom, the tape eventually broke, the ribbon got chewed up like fishing tackle birdsnest! So I eventually bought the official cassette after saving my pocket money, that eventually broke from being over played, so I got it on CD, that also got so played so much, it also stopped working (or I didn't care for my cd's back then! ;)) but now I got it digitally and it will never wear out now... Long live Bat 2, it truly is forever, timeless cool and badass!

Thank you for EVERYTHING, Meat! I’ve had the great fortune of seeing you perform live 4 times since ‘93, and you blew us away (and the roof) every time! I’ve also made it a point to listen to as many of your interviews as I could find; you’ve let your fans ‘in’; and I’ve thoroughly each one! Obviously, I’ve worn out several copies of All your recordings...what’s not so obvious is that we have listened to You, ML, exclusively, for years at-a-time! The words won’t form as I try to describe what you’ve meant to me (and mine) over the years....you are and always will be So Revered and So Loved ! God Bless....

A lot of people think the "I won't do that" part is a mystery, that he never tells you what he won't do... But he does, read the lyrics carefully and you can figure it out. He says exactly what he won't do, just before he says "I won't do that" (Ex: the first thing he will not do is... "forget the way you feel right now") Plus the end of the song, the duet section, is more explicit in exactly what else he will not do. Meat Loaf... I think of him as an everyman's rock artist. Many of his songs are about down to earth relatable concepts, things that just about anyone may have experienced or at least easily imagine themselves doing or experiencing. He is also a bit of a hefty man of average features, not some pretty boy type... When he got his start, talent was usually more important than looks. Music videos were not really a thing yet, so the radio was where most first heard an artist. So talent was important. Sure, there were bands created with the member's marketability in mind, back then as now, "The Monkeys" are an example... But with genuine talent and some luck, about anyone could find success if they worked for it. Talent winning the day over looks never fully went away, but I do get the feeling it may be picking back up again as well, and I welcome that.

The problem with this song is that the 7inch single version, which was the version usually played on the radio has had the section where it explains what it is that Meat won't do cut out. So people were left wondering what it was that he wouldn't do for love. One of my all time very favourite male artists - you can't describe him just as a singer, he's a performer!
@marine66805 жыл бұрын
@@craigmccullough7333 Even a chopped version that omits the duet still has enough information to know what "that" is. It's built into the structure of the song, it's just not straight forward. Each verse tells you what "that" is... (Each verse's "that" is different) It's just the structure makes many people not associate the pertinent line in the verse, to the declaration in the chorus that he wouldn't do "that". It is several sentences before that declaration, and often people do not directly link the words in the verse to the words in the chorus.

Having grown up with most of these songs (I'm "old"), it is fun to see someone of your age discovering them for the first time and realizing, like I've known for most of my life, that this is some of the best music ever made and they just don't make it like this anymore. The days of the epic ballads like this are gone. Anyway, you should also do some reactions to Guns n Roses (November Rain, the music video), and some AC/DC (Hells Bells and Back in Black). Loving your reactions.
@MadTheDJ5 жыл бұрын
One of the all-time great collaborations in rock music: Meat Loaf (vocals) and Jim Steinman (composer and lyrics). Those chills you experienced were felt by many when this album (Bat Out Of Hell II) was released in the early '90s. Meat was considered a by-gone rock act of the '70s and his collaborator, Jim, had moved on to other projects with other artists (Bonnie Tyler, Pandora's Box).But they got back together in the studio to create a sequel to their 1975 album Bat Out Of Hell and this was the lead single. It was HUGE. It was like a great mythic god descending to earth and reminding everyone of just how epic music should be. That you had just about the same reaction as people did when it first came out says something about both the power of a great song and the state of popular music today. Yes, there's good music out there today, but not much with this kind of power.

Mate, you are CLASS! Loved watching your facial expressions as you realized the sheer genius unfolding before your very eyes. When you paused before the female vocal came in, I thought 'oh my God, what's he gonna do when she starts singing?' and you didn't disappoint 😁😁😁. So glad you chose to listen to the rarely played much longer album version rather than the slimmed down version for radio air play where most of the female vocal is omitted. Man, go watch the video as the girl used to mouth the female vocal is one of the most beautiful you'll ever see. Watching you react to this song must've been the way I responded 43 years ago as a 17-year-old listening to 'Bat Out Of Hell' for the very first time! Incredible!

One of life's great pleasures is watching someone hearing Meat Loaf for the first time. JB, you are not alone in having your mind blown by Meat. I'd love to see your reaction to Meat singing "For Crying Out Loud." Thanks very much. I subscribed.

It’s about time someone reacted to this however you should have listen to the duet version with Patti Russo
@garyr87395 жыл бұрын
Jay, don’t get me wrong. I think the Patty Russo version was pretty good. But I like the Carla DiVito version better. The version where she was wearing the white one piece.

Gary Reinoldt the 5min performance? No the extended 10-12 min ones I’m speaking on are much better. Given technology the newer live performance are normally better in quality then older but the duet I’m speaking about was done in studio.
@garyr87395 жыл бұрын
Jay, you’re correct about a short versions. But if there is an eight minute 26 second version that is very good and inho a smidgen better than the Patti Russo version but you can’t go wrong with either one so you won’t get an argument from me.

JB, Love your passion for music and talent, it's a gift, never lose it. Only wish you could have been there to witness this extraordinary man and his band, live. I was there Halloween 1977 when he blew the roof off the Orpheum Theatre in Boston....... He was larger than life on stage.....literally and figuratively. To this day it's still the finest live show I've ever seen.

If you like the sound of this song, you owe some thanks to Jim Steinman who wrote it. Steinman has a VERY particular songwriting style that really helped define Meat Loaf's own signature sound. You should look up some of his other work starting with his contribution to the Streets of Fire soundtrack. The studio band who recorded the music he wrote for the film was called Fire Inc. and the two songs were called "Nowhere Fast" and "Tonight is What It Means to be Young". The similar flow and feel between them and this song are unmistakeable. That's Jim Steinman's influence.

He wrote a few for other artists too, like: Faster Than The Speed of Night, Holding Out for a Hero, It's All Coming Back To Me Now, Making Love Out of Nothing At All, and Total Eclipse of the Heart.

Hell yeah, the film "Streets Of Fire" is such an awesome combination of action and music. As soon as I had seen the film in TV, I tried to get the DVD, but it wasn't available at this time. So I had to wait for the release of the DVD, but at least the soundtrack was available. The songs, especially this 2 songs of Fire Inc. helped me through the time I had to wait for the DVD. And I managed to buy me the HD-remastered Bluray-Disc as soon as it was released. I highly recommend "Bat Out of Hell", "Bat Out of Hell 2-Back Into Hell", "Bat Out of Hell 3-The Monster is Loose" and try "Welcome to the Neighbourhood" and "Couldn't have said it better" as well. Keep rockin'.
