On this episode, Janis explores the traditions of a driven hunt in Latvia. He joins forty members of a hunting club for their first driven hunt of the year. It’s complicated, fast and fun. The action is great, and lunch is hot and delicious. Presented by ‪@WorkSharpOutdoor‬

Thank you! Janis, for sharing this experience with us. I'm glad you had a chance visit Latvia to see part of your history and meet some good people. I hope to see another hunt Latvia next year. I had a similar experience in Ukraine and got to meet some really good people who happened to be hunters. The hospitality we were shown was amazing!

This is how i grew up hunting in Germany. The small families coming together from all the local villages, the massive dinners at the end, beaters and hunters together, local farmers sharing their land for the hunt, the sense of overwhelming comunity and respect for each other, the dogs and ofcourse the game. Everyones dogs bieng related, everyone sharing their stories at the fire. No phones. Not one social media post. Im sad i dont have that anymore but so very greatful i was a part of it. Was truelly special. May these traditions live on.

Wow this was very cool. Very well done. Love to see the spotlight on a little known culture. Over the years I’ve learned so much about Latvia through the Meateater podcast. A country that probably 98/100 Americans don’t know exists. With as much reverence they Latvians here have for their country, it was fun to see Jani experience it for his first time. The buildup over the years, and the well done production, narrating and editing got me emotionally invested in the story. Glad I finally got around to watching these ones. Makes me want to go visit the lands of my grandparents.

As a first generation American, I grew up hunting in Northern California doing deer drives with my family. Deer drives are a tradition in which was the preferred manner to hunt as well. I moved away and finally went back to our family camp in California last September after a 7 year break and got a buck. Janis talking to the club members in his mother tongue made me well up and feel the same emotions I felt. Loved this episode though and through

Janis thank you so much for that insight, it was absolutely amazing watching. It’s great to see how other countries are so passionate about hunting and how safety isn’t compromised. If only those animal activists were to come and see something like that. They just might see the other 95% to hunting. No words can articulate it, it’s something a hunter knows. Thanks again so much for these video. Me personally I’d like to see more of theses type of hunts.

Here is a practical advice for shooting from a standing position: Either place the wiggling rifle sling on your left arm while gripping the stock of your rifle with your left hand, or grip the sling together with the stock. This will prevent the sling from wiggling around, which can easily put you off target. Kind regards from a german driven-hunt enthusiast!

Great show, nice touch in helping with the game in the first episode. Driven hunting is a passion and a massive thrill in the heat of the moment. Respect for both weapon safety and quarry is paramount. The tableaux at the end is always a highlight and a nice way to end the hunt. We in the UK are not permitted to hunt driven ground game. We also go to mainland europe for it.

Nice episodes. I sometimes wonder as an austrian about the US and the countless people that stem from the old country, while never witnessing it themselves. It must be kind of hard to have a cultural background (irish, german, dutch, italian, latvian, polish etc. etc.) and while speaking the native tongue, not truly belonging to either one of them. It brought a tear to my eye to see, Janis reconnect with the customs of his ancestry. It somehow shows the melting pot that the Americas are and the longing for identity that some of these groups have. P.S:: I sometimes hear that people are astonished about the architecture in my home city of Vienna and the history it has. For me its quite difficult to imagine living in a small city in America or a rural town, that does not really have a noteworthy history in of itself (or maybe it just wasnt recorded).
