Join Janis as he makes his first trip to his fatherland. Although deeply rooted in his own personal culture, including his first language, Janis has never been to Latvia until now. Roaring stags, home-built treestands, hunting goddesses, and more superstitions than you can shake a stick at, make for an eye-opening trip.

I saw Jani at the BZM airport when he was leaving for this hunt. Despite all the times I imagined hanging out with him or Steve, and how we'd quickly become best friends, I immediately turned into a mildly creepy babbling idiot; telling him how much they changed my life. I described it to my wife as the way a teen girl might act when meeting Justin Bieber for the first time. Anyway, I'm so happy to see this video, as it reminds me of that great hunt in MT, and how much I love this lifestyle. The MeatEater crew was so critical in my growth as a hunter. Keep up the great work! Maybe we'll meet again, and I will be cool next time.....

i spent 6 months in Latvia with the Canadian Battlegroup in Adazi. I loved every second of being there, its a beautiful small country, Riga seemed to always have something new to offer. I visited the holocaust museum and the older gentleman there mentioned how thankful and safe he felt now that NATO had a presence there, he no longer sleeps with a packed bag and gun ready to go. would go back 100%

The knife superstition is very much alive and well in the states, as well. My grandfather, who was a knife collector and merchant after retirement, once gave me a knife with a penny in the box and explained the same tradition. It's very cool to know that it is such a widespread tradition across the world.

when my grandfather gave me my first knife when I was 10 he did the same thing. He handed me a penny and then told me to give him back the penny and take the knife. He was from poland. Recently did the same thing with a close friends son. He turned 10 and instead of a game I gave him a knife.

20:40 This is why I love the MeatEater crew. They don't rush shots from bad angles. So pro. I watch many hunting videos on KZfaq and the MeatEater crew always deliver clean and precise shots to the animal. Clean kill guaranteed with these guys. Some times these characteristics even lead to failed hunts and it's stillpoetic. I LOVE IT.

So many thoughts. This was truly amazing. Seems like you got to spend time with and enjoy the company of some truly amazing people. My nonni and nonna came to America after surviving WWII in Italy. I am from Bosnia and Herzegovina and we are hunting also like this, we have a beautiful forests with a lot of different game species. We don't have too much red deer, but we do have a wild boars, wolves, brown bears, roebucks, hares, foxes, and in some parts of the land even jackals (they are something like a coyotes, just European..) and there is of course a lot of different bird species like a pheasants and duck species also on the rivers... So I can say enough, we are ussualy hunting with the dogs because it is a lot more interesting and exciting. I live in the mountains and in my terrain is very tough and difficult to hunt especially if you are hunting without dogs.. so everybody who are thinking about hunting in Europe should come and see how thats look like... Wonderful video..

Janis, I was in Latvia for a month. We spent a month training with LatBat armed forces in 2011. I made some Latvian friends and loved the sights of Riga. We were in a small town near the base called Dugvapils. It was crazy to see everything that was left behind from decades of turmoil and war. I first handedly can appreciate the stunning beauty and mystic of the Latvian culture and story. Very very cool country.

@@missourimongoose8858 depending on what you are hunting boars and roe deer are pretty loose, fallow deer and red deer little more regulated, moose and seals are strictly regulated and animals like wolfs and bears are extremely regulated. Then there are alot of smaller animals and birds that are pretty loosely regulated but some animals has certain restrictions of what you need to hunt like with birds you usually need a bird dog present to track down and fetch the birds

What an awesome taste of the hunting lifestyle across the globe. There is so much more to the hunt than the hunt itself. That being said, this video really made me appreciate how free and unregulated hunting is here in the states. I’m thankful that we don’t have to hunt in private hunting clubs. I definitely would not be such a hunting “nut” if it were like that here. The North American conservation model is truly the best!
