Inspired by films and literature during his youth, Edward C. Byers Jr. aspired to become an elite soldier in the United States military. After a deployment with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 1999, Byers was accepted to attend Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training. He graduated with BUD/S Class 242 and fulfilled his dream of becoming a Navy SEAL.
On December 8, 2012, Byers was part of a hostage rescue mission involving an American Physician being held captive by the Taliban. After a difficult hike to the target, Byers' SEAL team reached the compound where they believed Dr. Dilip Joseph was being held.
Following closely behind Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas Checque, Byers entered the compound, shooting dead an armed Taliban fighter and engaging others in fierce hand-to-hand combat. During the firefight Byers would use his body to shield the Dr. Joseph from enemy fire.
After the successful rescue of Dr. Joseph, Byers noticed Nicolas Checque had been wounded during the firefight and attempted to resuscitate him, but Checque would eventually succumb to his wounds. Nicolas Checque was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his actions.
For his actions Edward Byers was awarded the Medal of Honor on February 29, 2016.

He was killed 1 day before his 23rd birthday and we laid him to rest 1 day after he was supposed to be coming home from Iraq. We had an ex Navy Seal in my hiking club that I got to know. He knew I was ex Navy too, but a radarman. One time I encountered him going up a very steep hill near Auburn CA we call training hill. I was walking and he was jogging. He invited me to jog up the hill with him and I did for about 100 yards but I couldn’t keep up with him so I told him to continue jogging and I would walk the rest of the way up and meet him at the top. I’ll never forget what he said which was no, I’ll walk up with you, we never leave a man behind. I said you were a Seal and I was a radarman, that doesn’t count, you guys did pushups and we just pushed buttons. He said yes it does, we are both ex Navy, we were on the same team and we walked the rest of the way up the hill together like brothers. This was a really tuff guy built like a bulldog but yet he had a fierce and humble sense of supporting a team member even if he was just a skinny ex navy radarman.

One of the good things about being an American, is knowing that if you ever get captured like that, whether they are able to pull it off or not, there are men like this man, who are planning and trying to figure out how to come get you, and will pull out all of the stops to do so. I think just knowing that would help me get through something like that.

After Seal Team 6 captured Osama Bin Laden and were being celebrated a helicopter carrying Seal Team 6 members was shot down killing all aboard. It seemed like it was quickly swept under the rug but seemed very suspicious to me. How did the attackers know SEALs were aboard. We’re they tipped off, possibly by Pres. Obama or one of his cronies, or did they just get lucky? Will we ever know?

Chief Byers' narrative and the way he tells this mission is riveting and awesome. The men of DEVGRU are amazing. I'm from Coronado and had the privilege of knowing and befriending a SEAL who eventually went on to be a plank owner on SEAL team 6. This was around 1980/81 time frame. I found out later that he was also a member of Gold squadron when he was there. As it turned out, I later became an AFSOC gunship pilot and actually ran into my friend on one of my first combat missions. Although he is no longer with us, he was a great guy and I really miss him. Chief Byers is exactly the type of guy you'd see in SEAL teams and even the guys at Ft. Bragg. Friendly to a fault, intelligent, well spoken, and obviously in tremendous physical shape with endurance that is hard to imagine. Respect and honor these men for keeping our country safe from a lot of evil that would take away our freedom and way of life.

He is an extraordinary man doing things maybe .0001% of the men in the world can do. You have to remember, recall, act, protect and mentally manage a million things while rounds are sometimes impacting the loose parts of your gear. And that is if you are lucky. That these highly trained and experienced men were prepared to enter the enemy camp in order to rescue an American Doctor being held captive, in the full knowledge that they may be killed, wounded or captured is utterly remarkable! You can get numb to sounds of gun fire and explosions, but once it's within your zone, that fear is in everyone. The enemy feel it as well. Take advantage, go auto pilot/use your training to subdue, or sit and panic is what makes the difference. The guy was given a PENTAGRAM as a reward for killing people in a different country. The “Taliban” exists exclusively because of NATO countries. Once again, government creates a problem ON PURPOSE, and stupid people sign up to kill for the government. Tell me, why we should be celebrating this guy?

I've never watched one of these before. It played right after something else but I'm glad I got to see it. It brought tears to my eyes and I felt immensely proud of Navy Seal Byers. He's right, the news these days are reluctant to give honor where honor is due to our soldiers and Americans don't have a full understanding of the sacrifices our brave soldiers have made for us, for our freedoms, our nation. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Mr. Byers.

As a Nam vet I hear thank you for your service every time I wear my vet hat, just saying that to you doesn't seem enough. We all do what we have to do to stay alive and hopefully everyone we serve with gets to go home when it's time, loosing someone is probably the hardest thing to deal with. You have done more than your share of duty. Welcome home to freedom you helped all of us to enjoy.

As a fellow Veteran, I would like to say thank you for doing such a great job of explaining the true cost our freedom. The "blood, sweat, and tears;" you described are coupled with the Children that will not have their Father's in their lives, the Widows that are without their Husbands, and the ones that we love, and those who love us, who must do without. You are the best our country has to offer. You have Honored your commrades and reflected great credit and character upon yourself, your family, and our Armed Forces. Thank you for your tremendous service to our Country Sir. May God continue to Bless America

I’d like to think of myself as a tough person and able to focus and get through difficult things. I do not even get close to understanding what these men have gone through from training to deployments. I don’t think you can understand it unless you have been through it yourself. It’s really unbelievable and the reason we’re able to wake up and eat coco puffs and listen to the radio on the way to work. I think most people forget that. Thank you to you and your men from the bottom of my heart. Thank you.
