8 жыл бұрынToday we wrap up our discussion of the media by talking about how the government interacts with and influences the content we see. Now it may be easy to assume that because we live in a free-market capitalist society, the only real regulation of the media is determined by the consumers, but this isn’t necessarily true. The government controls a number of factors including the potential for lawsuits, spectrum licensing, FCC fines, and has even tried to pass a bit of legislation. So we’ll talk about how all of these factors influence the media and end with a discussion of a pretty hotly debated topic these days - net neutrality.

The biggest restriction to free speech on TV is not the government, but industries who threaten to withdraw their advertisements from a channel if the channel airs points of view they find unfavorable.

+conradthe2, the animal agriculture industry routinely prevents news broadcasters from airing information about the factory farming conditions under which the majority of farm animals are raised in the United States, where animals are packed together as tightly as possible to save on operating costs. There was one case where a TV station wasn't even planning on discussing on how the animals are treated, but just wanted to invite a vegan chef on to a cooking show, but then they had to disinvite her because the dairy industry threatened to pull all their advertisements from the channel.

+Figaro Fog It's just a bait to restrict what people can or can't publish on internet. They've already approved it in Brazil and, often, judges use the internet neutrality law to censor content. Of course that regulators will not say "we want to be the ones to tell you what you are allowed to speak". They will always present bills to increase their power as if it was the people's interest.

Media companies are shooting themselves in the foot by merging and demolishing their diversity of perspective. The internet will always be a place where large media conglomerates and people in their bedrooms are presented on the same playing field, and the new and fresh perspective will always win.

The internet has a tendency to form "bubbles" around people sharing the same ideas and ideologies. New ideas very rarely enter those circles. Radical ideas on the other side that would not survive in public, can get more and more radical when people all over the country connect and share their ideologies without outside influence. Off-course, that is not censorship, but very off from an idealized world, where different people/groups share an open and fair discussion in an open place. Having access to all sides of a debate is a great start and thing - but having access does automatically result in (self-) confrontation with those opposing views.

sarowie ***** The internet favours confirmation bias, most social medias platforms are built this way. It takes somewhat of an effort to go and try challenging your preconceived notions or dogmas. So, those circles are basically the modern equivalent of a cult.

For those of you who support more regulation everywhere, from health care to free speech to fantasy football, let the internet be an example of how we don't need heavy government regulation for things work out. More regulation of the internet would have killed millions of jobs and shattered our quality of life. It was good that free marketeers prevailed over big government.

+No-Stalgia Goggles You have a complete misunderstanding of why American speeds are currently below other countries then. America built their internet infrastructure off the back of the old telephone wires that cris-crossed the country, while other countries didn't even start building their infrastructure until much of the technology was already advanced. So now companies in America have to play catch up with our infrastructure. It's happening, but not at the speed that you want. That's not the fault of the free market, but rather the shear scope of bringing such an infrastructure to a country the size of America.

+Kenny Zhang I'll ignore the grammar (or does Comcast really dictate where you can live?) To state that Comcast has the monopoly, completely ignores the satellite ISPs or DSN from the local telephone company. Granted that satellite tends to be more costly and DSN is snail paced. That leaves Comcast as the best bang for the buck. So then the question becomes, are you paying substantially more for Comcast than other people living in larger cities that have more choices for cable internet? I would seriously doubt it. I will admit that I only have my own anecdotal experience to go by, but when I was living in OKC, I actually paid slightly more for my cable internet than I currently do here in rural Kansas. In Oklahoma, I had a choice of 3-4 cable providers here I only have the one.

Given how common political attack ads are, doesn't that mean it could theoretically be possible to rely entirely on your opponent's guaranteed attack ads to give you free ad time instead of raising campaign money for advertising? Have any candidates ever tried this, I wonder?

I wonder if it would be a good idea to pu an upper age limit on being a politician. Like, let's say ,over 40 years, you'd no longer be allowed to run for any office. This would guarantee that fresh viewpoints and way of thinkng is introduced in to the political life more often.

Instead of co-operating regarding the whole refugee situation, we broke apart to a hundred pieces, begining with Ass-hat's like Orbán. If we co-operated, the refugee situation wouldn't be a third as big of a problem as it became. +1234kalmar for your country, that might be true. On the other hand: I don´t like 20 year old politic students with a curriculum vita that under job experiences can be summed up to "handing out pamphlets for a charity" running for office. Especially in offices/functions like science/research/medical I would like to see people with relevant experience in that field. Given that those fields have a long learning/study time and those offices needing a lot of experience, setting an upper age limit would not be a good idea. Maybe a different idea: What about a limit on how long a politician can serve? If a politician can only serve two voting periods in a high political office, it would pull up new people into office every so often, without forcing people to start the political career with 20 and then to already end it with 40 being left with no further career options.

sarowie I like your idea a lot! And maybe make it mandatory to have a degree on the field you are a minister of. Like, If you want to be a minister of education, you have to have a Teacher's diploma, Health and welare ministers should have a doctorate and/or at least 5 years experience in leading position in a hospital, and so on.

Reagan was right to abolish the "fairness doctrine." There's nothing fair at all about forcing broadcasters to air what the government thinks is the appropriate content. They should be free to show what they want.

+Naveen It was not what the government thinks it's right. Craig was kind of biased right there. The fairness is when you air a program criticizing, I don't know, the Baltimore riots and you have to air another defending it. Yes, that would be a good thing (of course, i don't think it would work because of politicians, but it's a good idea)

***** now I understand, and you are right. I wish we could have a true free and fair media, but all solutions I see or think have a backlash. It's so easy to censor the media, but so hard to make it right... Subsides wouldn't work, nor the fairness doctrine. This makes me sad and thank you for giving a good argumnt to the issue, you actualy are right

+Naveen From what he said in the video, it was _not_ about forcing broadcasters to air what the government thinks is appropriate but instead to actually stop the broadcasters to _only_ air what _they_ think is appropriate. It's fair in the sense that both sides of a political debate are adequately covered and not one more than the other. Of course, that has more or less obvious flaws but the point is that it is not in any way connected to what the government would like you to broadcast. In fact, it could easily force a broadcaster to show content that both the government and the broadcaster unanimously wouldn't want to show. *Edit*: Fixed grammar

Diana, the Inorganic Vegan Isn't there a "right to answer in the US"? If you have a false acusation about you or a criticism, in Brazil you can demand in justice that your answer is aired at the same time of the day. It happened once on the biggest channel here, and the one who got the right to answer was one of the biggest critics of the network, it was pretty awesome

Game of Thrones isn't basic cable. That's paid subscription service. Special. That's why HBO is basically soft core porn half the time when they do a show: subscription service means basically no restrictions. Basic cable is basic. No paid services included - unless your on a non-basic package. Seriously, Crash Course, you guys can't figure out how cable works? This is such a disappointing mix up. Comedy Central would've been a valid example.

News media shouldn't have freedom of the press/freedom of speech when reporting on news and must always only report from a source unless they explicitly say they are editorializing and what they say is not necessarily true nor to be considered as true

Felicia Ingram What you may find offensive might be different to what some other person finds offensive, therefore there wouldn't be an end to censorship, and it would just become government suppression of free press and media
