I studied medicine as a graduate student at UCL having done biomedical science as an undergraduate student.
In this video I will compare the teaching styles, workload, exams and stress levels of each degree and give you my opinion on which one I think was the hardest.

If you have similar experience with studying biomedical science or medicine I’d love to know 😊

I had loads of lectures per week and lectures every day until final year. I do agree with outside learning was huge, lectures only touches on the surface. A lot is determined by your major, mine is pharmacology. We didn't have to do references for essay timed exams but currently we do and critical analysis of research

You summed this great, medicine offers breadth, Biomed gives depth. I work as a Biomedical scientist in medical microbiology. I’ve found there is a huge disconnect between the lab and the ward and not many clinicians seem to know what we do. I’d love to see more medics visiting the labs so they can see what happens to their samples.

I agree, I think over the years only the knowledge needed for clinical management sticks and the extensive biochemistry we learnt becomes less relevant

Loved this video I’m currently doing boimed so it’s nice to know what to expect when doing medicine in comparison. When you said during medicine you have shorter holidays, is that because you’re on placements or do you just continue with more lectures?
@DrEzgiOzcan
@DrEzgiOzcan 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeevan! The shorter holidays were in the years we had clinical placements (years 3-5). We were on hospital rotations till June with exams in July so only had August as time off

That’s so interesting, I actually am finding medicine harder than biomed at the moment! Maybe it’s because of the unis as my undergrad uni had lots of lectures and lab time and less focus on SDL/research papers I guess? So good to see a different perspective

What year of Med school are you in? The breadth of knowledge you need to know on med school is definitely tough. It did take adapting post biomed

I feel like most of the people who have gone through both degrees, they usually study biomed first and study medicine after graduated from biomed. And i feel like many of those people say that biomed is tougher than medicine i think it isn't true cause, you'll think medicine is easier cause you've already learned overlapping topics in biomed, it'll be much easier for you to digest the lectures in medicine and also easier to memorize Second is if you've successfully graduated from biomed, by that time you will b more matured, fully adapted to university life, you'll knoe how to do research, how to do assignments etc, these are the skills you've learnt during biomed degree and you can straight apply it all in your medicine degree, which makes medicine easier (cause you've gone through the suffer in biomed, there is no transition period when you stidy Medicine) So I think those who took both degrees and feel like biomed is harder, are most probably due to these influences and it isn't necessarily true

I totally get your point, studying medicine after is definitely easier when you have a degree beforehand to develop your study skills etc. I tried to take these into consideration when making my final conclusion on which degree is harder as i found personally that my biomedical sciences degree was very science heavy, which involved reading many complex research papers as a way or preparing for the exam, hence medicine in comparison was simpler based on this point Thanks for watching the video, really appreciate your feedback :)

Great Video - very well done, It sounds like the biomedical sciences approach is more European and more 21st century, whereas the medicine is more 20th century, cramming left brained research, which explains why most doctors are so closed minded and reductionistic. Every High-School.Guidance Counselor should share this video with students thinking of toing into medical fields.

Hello, out of curiosity, did you transfer from biomed to medicine at ucl. If so, how does the transfer scheme work i.e is it one year of biomed then a transfer to medicine?
@DrEzgiOzcan
@DrEzgiOzcan Жыл бұрын
Hi. There is no transfer option at UCL. I completed biomedical science degree and applied to medicine via ucas as usual

We had a 36 year old dentist who wanted to go into medicine and was on the course with us. That's just one example, there were lots who were in their 30s, so starting GEM in your 30s is quite common. Have you watched my video on GEM?: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9Z0ntecsJOYd4k.html

Can I study cancer biology and immunology as premed? After then can I apply to medicine? I got rejected for med.. It was really hard to get through those emotions. I always wanted to become an oncologist. So I choosed to study cancer biology and immunology. Please tell me is it going to be fine to apply medicine?

I'm really sorry to hear about the rejection. I know exactly how you feel and I promise it gets better. you can definitely do a degree in immunology as an undergraduate degree and apply for medicine as a graduate student if you still want to study medicine at that point.
