@New King it's not that hard to understand, i did struggle with "êow tæcan" at first but, considering the context, the fact that it's a question and that "eow" sounds like "you", along with "ðâm" sounding like "then", "canne" clearly being "can" and "ðe" being "this." i'm from the country of georgia, born here and still living here but i'd say i know english quite well

Old English came from German through the Saxon and the Angles. They formed the Anglo-Saxons and brought germanic language. Sio many words of this old english sound like nowadays german. Fugheles = Vögelchen (birds) Neheth = näher (comes near) Weder = Wetter (weather) Nicht = Nacht (night) Soregh = Sorge (sorrow)

Majestic Satire Far from it, back then (early 13th century) the english language was very germanic, even containing words of scandinavian origin due to norse influence during the preceding centuries. It is true that the normans had already conquered England by this point, but norman french was exclusive to the upper classes whereas the remainder of anglo-saxon society would still converse in english. Norman french (which had become anglo-norman) only started influencing the english language a century after this song was composed (approximately during the 14th-15th century).

+Georg Relationship between Middle English and Middle High German is like the relationship between modern Spanish and Italian. Some words were very similar, others were completely different. For example, the word for "earwig" in Middle English was "earwygge", while in Middle High German "oerenwuetzel". In Middle English, "Monday" would have been "Moneday" and in Middle High German "Manetac". So the spelling/pronunciation was quite different. Also Middle English has way more French/Latin/Greek words imported from the Norman Conquest, while Middle High German retained most of its Germanic vocabulary from Old High German. However you would have words which were identical in both languages, for example the "house" was pronounced as "Hoos" ("oo" sound as in modern word "moose") in both MHG and ME, the same with the word "light", it was pronounced as "leaht" in both ("ea" as in the modern word "beat", and the "h" would not have been silent). The difference in Middle English vs Middle High German would also be in the personal pronouns (14th century- ME -- MHG): Ic/I vs Ich. Thow vs Du He/She/It vs Er/Siu/Ez We vs Wir Ye vs Ir They vs siu. Also, the accusative and dative "(t)hem" in Middle English would have been "im" in Middle High German. Also different.

Middle High German was also a lot more inflected than Middle English ever was. Same can be said about High German and English today, to a greater extent. Nouns and Adjectives were usually fully declined with four cases in Middle High German, and there was I believe vestiges of the Instrumental left over from Old High German. Middle English underwent a major grammatical simplification very early. It could be said that the divergence between Old English and Middle English was primarily a result of the above simplifications. Early Middle English was just as inflected as Old English (There are some fragments surviving from the early 12th century), however I suppose it could just as easily be classified as a very late form of Old English. I would say that both were phonetically pretty similar prior to the High German consanant shift that occurred starting in the late 13th century or I guess early 14th century.

+Cam Kustka the last paragraph is wrong though. The "High German Consonant shift" occurred prior to the "Middle High German" era, it happened in the OLD High German Period (circa 8th to the 11th century). You probably meant "the great VOWEL shift" which both High German and English underwent starting 15th century and being fully complete in the late 17th century. In Shakespeare's time (early 1600), most vowels have already been shifted, but some remaining words' pronunciations were still being in the process of transformation.

The Middle English pronoun for "they" was "hi" or "he". "They" derives from Old Norse and appears in South England at about 1400/1500. It was invented by William Caxton's book printing.

Wrong: English is a Germanic language ( more similar to Frisian than to German, however). The Norman-French layer only entered after 1066, when Old English was well established not only as the daily, spoken language, but also in writing. And even then, Middle English still largely resisted French loanwords until after 1250 - one Dan Michael of Northingate, writing as late as 1340 in Kent, translated/calqued most Latin and French words into the Middle English written “in his own hand” - even translating ‘amen’ as "zuo bi hit" (so be it).
