You make a brave and lovely picture in your bright tunic, like a cardinal in the snow. And we were vouchsafed a glimpse of your ancestral fire hydrant. A merry, Merry Christmas to you and yours, and may your coming year overflow with joy, health, and prosperity! And tea!

The freezing rain hit here, and on the way home on the bus I finished my medieval sleeves. Wool lined in linen. I pull them on over my hoodie sleeves because modern fabric just does not do it.

Damn, that's the wet 'n heavy stuff. I'm not surprised your tunic and hood were sufficient. (And I love that tunic!) All you need to keep yourself comfortable (or not-miserable) is to cover your head and legs. It's been -10C in southern Ontario these last few days, and the snow isn't quite so wet, but the wind is a beast. I wear knitted stuff under my hoodie and over my face, and I have an unlined, full-length Inverness-style blanket coat with a waist-length cape attached over everything. It's enough to hold the heat in and the keep the wind out.

It's fairly light as it's falling--it's really the best time to shovel. It warmed up a bit that afternoon and became really heavy and wet, then we got a deep freeze overnight and everything else became solid ice.

Hehe, I've been making myself warm clothes but I don't usually wear them out of the house because in winter here everything gets coated with salt, and I don't want to have to wash it out of my wool skirt too often if I forget to gather it up when I sit in the car. And I shovel snow at work, I need to not be soggy so I do use some unnatural fibres in my usual get-up, but exactly what does depend on the kind of snow. I also have to be careful with my layers because I warm up pretty quick frm the activity, and if I'm not careful I will sweat and then get chilled once I stop moving, so I usually start out with a scarf but it gets chucked into the car after I warm up cause I need the ventilation! I wonder if the lyrepipe on the hood could have been used to keep it out of your face? I gave up on toques cause they don't block the wind in my ears (yes I'm Canadian) and hoods because they won't stay in place, and use ear covers now, either earmuffs on a headband, double layer polarfleece ear band, or one of those wire framed earwarmer things covered with polarfleece that only stays on if my hair's braided, not if it's down :P Glad you got only enough snow to be fun, where I was up north at Xmas we got about a foot, friends of mine in Michigan got easily double that, and at home they got a few inches of snow, then a few hours of rain, then another 8" of snow then high winds to blow it all around. We came back a day early to try to clean it up, the plow wakes were pretty bad even though the accumulation wasn't that much where we were plowing. Where it hadn't been disturbed, I could get my shovel in between the layers and do a pretty good job but anywhere there were footprints or tiretracks, I couldn't get down to the pavement, and neither could my hubby in the skidsteer... thankfully we've got a warm spell forecast for a few days later in the week and with a bit of salt to help we should get most of it melted before we get back to our usual frigid temperatures!!

I haven't shoveled snow in more than three decades (grew up in New England, but been living in Florida the past 31 years). Just watching you shovel snow made my back hurt, 😂. I wish we could go back to medieval clothing. So much simpler. Just sayin'. Though, medieval clothing in Florida in the Summer... probably not a good idea 😂. It's like a blast furnace in the Summer, here, the past few years. It's terrible. Can't convince my husband for us to move back up North.

Linen breathes nicely! I find it's cooler than cotton on those hot, humid days. We were in Florida visiting last year around September when it was good n hot. I was disappointed that I didn't see a single gator while I was there! Even on the St. John's River. Maybe next time.

That's interesting that you are required to shovel the sidewalk. Many years ago I learned never to to that. My dad used to just about kill himself every winter shoveling the sidewalk in front of the house. Somebody slipped and fell on the cleared sidewalk one day and sued my Dad. He was told in court that shoveling it "enticed" people to try to walk on it, and if he had left it untouched it would have been the pedestrian's own fault for trying to walk on an obviously hazardous surface covered with snow. No good deed ever goes unpunished.
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 Жыл бұрын
Wow...that's awful! We have city and HOA laws/rules that say we need to clear the side walks of snow or foliage. I didn't put any salt or sand down, though, so last night when I stepped out, it was slick! I stepped onto the snow on the edge to maintain my footing.

Actually I remember snow-shovelling and I always thought, that it's safer to have the snow trampled down and put some gravel on top, because the leftover bits of snow on the sideway transform to ice and make the sidewalk slippery...but the authority-guys... ;-) 🎄🎄🎄Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year🎄🎄🎄
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066

In our climate, when it falls, it's a wet snow. People walk or drive on it and compress it down. Then it deep freezes overnight and we have cobblestone ankle-turners and ice rinks on the roads. Look up videos of icy roads for Seattle and Portland and you will enjoy a series of bumper cars sliding down the hills.
@bunhelsingslegacy3549
@bunhelsingslegacy3549 Жыл бұрын
If you just tromp it down, it makes ice, and adding gravel to it, the gravel heats up in the sun and melts through it then you'e left with ice again. Where I live we have little plows that do the sidewalks and spread a bit of salt after they're done. Sounds wasteful but I've been doing small-scale commercial snow removal for five or six years now and we've tried a lot of different things, a lot of shovelling and a little salt is the best way to keep things safe.
