And here we go! It's launch time for Age of Sigmar 4.0 and Skaventide and I cracked open my copy to let you guys know if this huge set of Stormcast and Skaven miniatures is worth the price! I received my creator copy from ‪@officialwarhammer‬ pretty late so there'll be painting videos coming soon, but I wanted to show you guys the contents and a review today anyway! I used to cut all the pegs from Easy-to-build miniatures but I have since found a better method. Tip of the old Mold line remover (the one with aluminium handle) is perfect size to make the sockets little bit wider. Making the sockets wider allows to keep the pegs for structural support and sub-assembly purposes.

@@MediocreHobbies Also try coating the easy to build peg in plastic cement. It softens the peg so there's no friction sliding it in, makes it a bit softer so it will fully meld to the hole and will hold fantastically with very little seam

Thanks for the video! This was a great preview of the box. Something I've been doing with push-fit models is cutting the pegs at an angle. They go together a bit easier and line things up nicely with minimal gaps caused by not getting the peg in far enough. Also, you rarely lose a peg when trying to pull a model apart for any reason before gluing. Downside is you usually can't just leave them unglued if that's your preference.

Hey could I ask you about painting the black templars? I have my marine in chaos black primer and I have dry necron compound, layer stormhost silver, or layer iron breaker which one would you recommend?

I’d prefer a drybrush of leadbelcher as it’s nice and dark and subtle. Necron compound is for sure to bright. You mite get away with iron breaker. Maybe do a test piece first.

I usually cut the "hole" part of the push-fit mechanism - like I put my nippers into the hole and cut parallel to the mechanism. Prevents that pneumatic pressure to talk about. Cutting the peg is an option, as you say, but I do find some easy-to-build models just fit better if the push-fit bits are used, even if glued.

I've building models nearly every day for 20 years, it's the air bubbles that are the issue. Lining things up is great but not if the models aren't going to stay together

@@MediocreHobbies I find cutting the pegs at the half way point and putting a small amount of plastic cement works to prevent them from coming apart. You get the best of both worlds that way.

One big surprise for me in this unboxing video is that you get options for the minis. I don’t think Leviathan had any options. Like the terminators and the stern guard veterans had 0 so you had to build them a certain way.

Cost saves tip, the Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner is nearly the same via MSDS as Extra Thin. Works just as well but costs half as much. Great for refilling your bottles

The cloaks on the new storm cast look great, but how on earth are you going to paint around them after gluing? Can you reach a brush effectively into the right places?

For this box, I decided to use only push fit to assemble the models. I was amazed that most of these went together very well. Many times, I heard and felt the pieces pop together. There were a couple of fits, especially the Lord Vigilant that were problematic and I did have to use glue on a couple of the cloak joints. The one unit that did not work was the Reclusians (where did they get that name), because the pins that went through the figures to join the front and back pieces had broken off during transit. This would have made them impossible to assemble push-fit. I used glue on those. Overall, push-fit worked well and the shields can easily be removed for painting. I do appreciate the bases not being glued to the figures. By the way, I did use small pliers to apply more pressure at times.

For push to fit models I have found that shortening the peg and filing the end of the peg bottom edge a little helps get the flushest fit possible.

If you really have a problem with air bubbles in the push fit you can just shorten the peg a little or score a line down the side to give the air a way to escape. I think think the push fit concept is less about not needing glue and more about automatic juxtaposition of the different pieces. It’s a lot easier to put together if the pieces aren’t sliding around or getting attached at the wrong angle.

Yeah I get that but then they should be shorter or like you suggested, have a score down the side. Right now they cause more problems that they solve, especially for newbies!

20:20 You could always do what I did for my Wood Elves (counts as Wanderers / Cities of Sigmar in AoS) since squares have been bumped up to 25 mm now. Base your Skaven on 25mm MDF bases, then drill a pair of 2mm holes in them. Then take a square base since the circle fits exactly inside it,drill holes in exactly the same spots using the circle as a template. Plop in some magnets and bam, easy swap between circle game and square game. Even easier if you have a laser cutter and can program it to cut those circles out when making the bases. For the larger things like the tree men with oval / rectangle bases since one doesn't fit inside the other I had to glue them onto a piece of cork tile, then magnetise the cork so it could just click onto either the oval or rectangle.

That's a really great way of doing it! The more I think about it though the more I think I won't have as much time for Age of Sigmar Skaven, maybe a spearhead though! Old World is taking up too much of my brain :D

I figured out this year that I'm not an army painter, painting the same colours so many times burns me out, so these days I play skirmish games and they will fit in a few that I like.

I think I'll definitely be sub-assembling some of the stormcast boys... I usually drill the holes on push-fit stuff, especially cloaked/robed minis, and use super glue to fill the gap as it dries hard and can be sanded down, a layer of lahmian medium before priming helps smooth it over too. Still an enormous pain in the arse, tho.

Also gonna use the Skaven for my old world, gonna mix them with models from all kinds of generations. The new clawlord might be hard to field though, i don't think the old FW brood horror is included even in "legends" for old world. The big warmachine is a bit problematic too but i will find a way!

When discussing the mounted lord they said skaven never had any mounts to draw inspiration from. Am I misremembering the brood horror mount? Is it only from total war?

I wouldn't think so. If it's anything like the Dominion or Leviathan sets, GW will overproduce and we'll end up with spares hanging around for months/years after. Failing that - there's always eBay.

A note on the Tamiya Extra Thin. If you need to refill your bottles, get some Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner. They are essentially the same thing and are virtually chemically identical. It costs more but its cheaper per volume than the extra thin glue

@@MediocreHobbies No I definitely mean the Knight-Questor, a stormcast on foot holding a lit torch and a sword. On the back of your box he is right below the W in the Warhammer AoS logo. I'm sure he's in there, it's just crazy how none of the videos I have seen of the box has shown him off. Maybe cause he's not in the Spearhead force for the stormcast?

The Gnawbeast and Clawlord mini's could be easily separated and with some minor conversion work make a decent rat ogre and a Foot Hero/Lord. The Clawlord could be very easily converted to have his right foot on a tactical rock and the left is flat(ish) so you could chop it at the ankle, the only sculpting would be gap filling and clipping some toenails haha, just needs some crotchal chainmail/cloth.

Wasn't going to get this as hadn't really got into AoS. When they previewed it have to admit that it was the clan rats that sold it to me. Would like to see the Skaven machine just to get an idea on the bronzes etc. and how difficult when assembled plus a clan rat

I've hated pegs since the Necrons from the Indomitus box and I usually remove them. For the Gryphound, the current ones I have are on the same base size as the Stormcast, 32mm I think. I bought a box of them for AOS 2.0 a few years ago.

I guess the thinking behind pushfit is for players to get the box, cut the minis out, push them together and play in 2 hours. Bug IDK, I think it's less than 1% of new Warhammer players who would do that.

You can use glue or sometimes if it's bad enough I use UV resin

For big gaps I use vallejo plastic putty. Comes in a tube so easy to apply. Then have those rubber tip pen things to work it into place and shape it, and flexible sanding pads from greenstuff world to blend it in. Maybe €25 total

I cut the pins/posts length wise by 1/3, and cut off 1/2 - 1mm from the tip.

I only had an issue with the Warpblaster, the pegs were misaligned with the 105mm base. Just took some elbow grease and i got it. My fingertips sure hurt after building all the rat boys!

The gryph hound is a strange one. The companion gryphs normally come on a 25mm base and the ones in a unit come on 32mm. seems like an oversight to me.

Orange and black, your now trademark colour scheme would, unironically, look really good for skaven - it's fun and spooky and Halloweeny, and I feel like that suits a load of mad scientist rat-monsters quite nicely. However, if you're tired of that, I have always been fond of the mustard yellow piratical bilge-rats of Clan Skurvy.

I’m not sure where you’re living/currency, in my country it’s expected to be €210, so if that’s the right conversion? Your local gaming stores might have it for cheaper, definitely worth asking around!

Plastic putty is decent for filling in small gaps. Works better than liquid green stuff.

I'm still always baffled that despite cutting so many models into stupid awkward parts, they never manage to do it in a way to hide the nubs or mold lines. If a guy's toe is going to be a separate piece could it maybe just not be attached to the sprue by the flat top of the nail, and have a line right across all the details?

With push fit you're better off shaving off a bit off the peg so it fits better.

I usually thin the end of the pins so they go into the holes a bit easier but yes not a great lover of push fit for model building

I would love this box. I actively play Stormcast Eternals, and the Skaven might be the best thing GW has created. It's too expensive for me right now, but I would love to get it in the future. No, my comment is this: for a box that has them right in the title, it seems a little silly that the art on the front of the box doesn't depict, you know, a Skaven. If I'm new to the hobby and I haven't engaged with anything yet and I see this in the store, I don't know what a Skaven is. I probably don't assume it's the big, armored badass on the front because it doesn't feel like something that would be called a Skaven. But then if the person on the cover isn't, then what is a Skaven? Again, they might be the best thing GW has made. Easily one of the most iconic fantasy races in their properties and even in the wider fantasy genre. I just feel like they should play that up a bit more. Like you can have a Stern Stormcast Helmet cut with a Screaming Skaven face. Just feels like a missed opportunity. And yeah, I'm not worried about missing out. I'll get it at some point.
