No matter who we are, we all experience physical pain at least once in a while. These experiences of pain can be overwhelming at times. Bringing our awareness to pain and using it as an object of meditation can help us learn about the nature of pain and how to relate to it. In this video, Mingyur Rinpoche guides us in a short meditation and briefly outlines four prospective experiences we may have when practicing pain meditation. “Pain meditation” may sound strange at first, but as you might find out, pain can be a great support for meditation!
This teaching is from the Joy of Living Level 1 Online Program bit.ly/3s9gXK9
Mingyur Rinpoche's teaching schedule is available at tergar.org/schedule.

I have a rare pain syndrome which causes pain 24 hours a day, often extraordinarily severe, and I've had it for over a decade now. Many years prior to this I saw some words scribbled on a public toilet wall which said "Pain is just a sensation, enjoy it like any other", and at the time that really made no sense to me at all but for some reason stuck in my head. Fast forward to the pain syndrome I would later develop and that grafiti has helped me immeasurably over the last ten years because it dawned on me that if pain is something that some people actually enjoy, then surely I can simply experience it without suffering. So I have learned to simply observe and experience the pain without the usual mental anguish normally associated with chronic pain. I don't know if that will help anyone else, but it seemed like a good time and place to pass it on.

That's really cool and fascinating to hear, Gary! I take it this realization/insight has helped you a lot when it comes to dealing with that pain? Do you feel completely "free" now from the usual negative experience of pain, or does the pain become to overwhelming at times?
@garywright8137
@garywright8137 3 жыл бұрын
@@martinbondesson I expanded on that theme and it took me on quite a journey of realisations. I wish I knew who wrote it, imagine if they knew the impact it would have. It's odd because I still feel pain like everyone else does but I don't actually suffer, not mentally. My body feels pain but my mind is at peace with it. Sometimes I even have to check to see if I'm actually feeling any pain, as an example it's like you may well be sitting on a chair right now but unless you focus your attention on it you aren't really aware of how it feels.

Gary, thank u so much for this. I highly respect people who have to endure things like u do and STILL keep going and find the light. It’s so inspirational. Hv u actually ever been in a vulnerable state and ur fed up with it? If yes, what do u do in those states?
@garywright8137
@garywright8137 3 жыл бұрын
@@MindNow thank you, and yes of course I've faced those states of mind many times. Now might be a good time to mention I have cancer too, but I have also faced homelessness, financial collapse, years of wrongful persecution and harrassment, plus MUCH more along the way. In fact, the sheer scale of events that have lead me to this point have been so unbelievable that had it not happened to me, I might not believe it myself. I'm one of those guys who for some reason the universe decided to come down on and smash every aspect of my life into little pieces, which has obviously been a pretty horrible experience, but each loss brought me closer to the real me beneath it all. So I suppose if I had to answer specifically what I do to overcome the suffering, it's learning to separate the real me from whatever event is potentially causing that suffering. We tend to identify and define ourselves with aspects of our lives like our career, or money, or objects, partners, homes etc. Even our bodies, our state of health, certainly our looks. But for me it wasn't until I had literally all of that taken away from me that I realised beneath it all lies an untouchable life force that is me. It's hard to break it all down in a KZfaq comment obviously but it's fair to say it's been a revelation, and that's just the physical/psychological aspects. The spiritual journey woven into this path has been even more unbelievable.

By detailing the only four possible ways it can go when meditating on pain, Rinpoche provides a precise roadmap. Remarkably, in one way pain liberates itself, and in two ways pain becomes your friend. Finally the map provides an offramp, which is absolutely critical for chronic pain sufferers, who need a method to reduce the fear that locks their pain in place. Thank you, Rinpoche!

A sensation can be painful, pleasurable or neutral (neither of the former). Painful sensations occur when there is resistance i.e. an unconscious effort to cease or change the sensation. If there is no resistance, and the sensation is accepted into the field of awareness instead, it will shift from painful to neutral. At least, this is what I have found. It's marvellous what the mind can do.

I've used meditation to treat pain many times in the past, it's more effective than any pill. Nowadays I use a Shakti acupressure mat which helps with the pain and also to get into a meditative state. Highly recommend such a mat for anyone, many friends have bought one after trying mine. Thank you for the video Yongey!

I was lucky enough to attend a talk by this wonderful teacher a few years ago. I had just started getting severe back pain and something my doctor called radiating nerve pain, sometimes in my arms or legs or hands etc. There was an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the talk and so I asked him for advice on meditating with pain. His words have helped me so much over the years. I'm still in pain today and seeing a spinal specialist but it's much more manageable thanks to this kind of advice. I'm so thankful to him for taking the time to share his teachings that I don't have the words to properly describe it. Thank you so much! 🙏

I have Sickle cell disease, you may know how painful it is. I dont know how i do somethimes, but the pain is suppressed, it is there but i feel very less pain (the more im calm and still). The more i pay attention to it, the worse it gets, So anyone with SCD , stay still even if it is hurting damn hard, at some point you will feel less pain (feels like pain is being supressed).
