This interview took place in 1975 during Ms Day's book promotion tour. Her book, entitled "Her Own Story," landed at No. 1 on the New York Times Best-Seller list. Check it out - it's a great book!

What a beautiful (and classy) lady. Here she was surrounded by three males and still, she held her own. I know she really did not want to sing but Mike got her going. He also has a lovely voice! The result was amazing and simply beautiful. Thank you for this lovely memory.

I came here from a 1974 Carson Show interview. She told Johnny she did not want to sing and he respected wish and told her he would not put her in that position, considering the audience was obviously up for it. To have Mike Douglas, who she knew as a singer in the business, find a gentle way to encourage her to sing, after answering painful questions about her life, was priceless. I don't know how many appearances on her book tour she had already made talking about those painful periods in her life, but she seemed to be making a Herculean effort to hold it together and respond to the questions. Thank you Steve Allen for the occasional joke and light momentary change of pace during her interview. Job well done. Rest in peace gentlemen and rest in peace Miss Day. You got this old dude in tears and you have given me closure, hearing you singing, here, Sentimental Journey. May your Journey be a blessed one.

@@MsMojoworks You have got it all wrong. Her mother never disowned her, in fact they were very close. She didn't refuse to take Terry to the hospital. Terry was living back in Beverly Hills with his wife. And she didn't die a recluse. I saw her a number of times up in Carmel, and many more of her friends often came to visit. Where on earth did you get all that fake information?

As long as I can remember I have ALWAYS wanted to be Doris Day, I'm almost 70. I didn't know until yesterday how much we have in common, my first husband was an abuser and I had my son he started abusing him, God gave me the strength to knee him where it hurts, two of my brothers came for me and he left and I was a freed victim. My son and I are best buddies. We survived. But I adore her and still want to be like her. God bless you sweet Doris I am so sad. Thanks for the memories😟💕👏 I'll love you forever and always

It seems Mike Douglas was not a good interviewer.. at least not in this episode, the interview with Doris seems rather like a cross examination than a casual interview, and the guest (Day) feels not at ease, critical for a good casual TV interview; Not to mention the other two co host which makes it look like a trial.

I adore her attitude , he voice , and more than that she is such a funny actress .Just the most adorable and most natural comedian ( aka Strait Girl). She makes you feel she dose not know about life when she's acting .It's so believable . I think that's why no no took her acting seriously ( She's that good at acting ) ..but in life no one knows how much she really knows . We are very lucky to have had her in our time . I will always cherish her humor , taste , movies and singing . Bravo Doris !!!

There is this definitive version of Day's Sentamental Journey on KZfaq, undoubtedly from either her 1971 or 1975 television special. Its sultry, minimalist - with a Peggy Lee quality to it. There is also of version of the Streisand classic Memories which Day delivers with photographs of her favorite leading men playing behind. That woman truly was one of the greats of the 50's 60's and 70's.

She has always been one of my hero's [Shee-ro's?]. She's such a treasure! If I'd known where she lived in Carmel, when I lived in the area, I'd have serenaded her on her Birthdays, too. Most gals do _NOT_ "make edgy choices"; gals too often get conned into relationships they don't recognize as dangerous; girls are taught to trust and keep trying...even still, even when they are being badly abused or taken advantage of. That 'taking advantage of', is _not_ restricted to the rich and famous. Media keeps promoting "the girl next door" image of innocence; any average "girl next door", has brimming-platefuls of their own troubles, which they dutifully strive to keep quiet. Doris worked very hard to make her life work well, as so many do, despite their troubles. That is _GRACE under-fire_. She's a wonderful role model. Grew up with her singing on the radio; her singing helped my Mom survive.

Wow. Larger-than-life, beautiful entertainment legend right there. So glad Steve pointed out Doris's underrated comedy and dramatic actress prowess. I think trying to describe and to answer her legendary "Girl Next-Door" image was more difficult still then, because in hindsight with more time's passage we can see her filmography and characters in those films and how she was cast to be the perfect young lady who may have been sexy but always strived to uphold her image's respect. I just wish the panel would've added how successfully Doris literally reinvented her image through her film career, transitioning from classic color musicals to serious film biographies and dramas to her more lightweight yet hilarious late 1950s and early '60s domestic comedies, and then even her late '60s-early '70s TV sitcom work. She had and did it all, and so well. :)

When I was very young I loved watching Doris Day movies and listening to her sing and dance. I wanted to be her and sing like her. Thank God she's an over comer despite all the heart breaks she's gone through. Beautiful lady. Calamity Jane (Doris) and Wild Bill Hickok (Howard Keel); have always been my favorite romantic team.
