In 1996, he became the first carrom player to receive the Arjuna award. Today Maria runs an institute where world rank players come for training. He also teaches kids from neighbourhoods in Chennai the tricks of the trade.

Same here. I used to play it with my family during my childhood. But I had still played it to some extent even after I have well grown up. Over time, it was faded away. We don't even have the Carrom Board now. We had it for around 15 years. I loved to play it alongside Cricket. Cricket and Carrom were the games I played most during childhood.

let's compare two equal positions. I agree to one of the point. this is something that happened in 1990-s and maybe print and television media could only cover enough that was in their ambit. but if you ask any kid do they know who's kapil dev. they might know him. I feel it's justified to say that this man deserves an undue respect from the youth of today, I read one interesting interview about major dhyan chand while he was still playing for India. he refused to be photographed by the interviewer because he said if the youth of this country saw me in this state even hes one of the world champion. they will be discouraged to follow this sport. I see the same pain in him when he explicitly advised his son not to take this same path. that's something because of his experiences. so my point is not about why cricket gets more sponsors.

I met this gentleman in the year 1999, when my father organized the national carom championship in Ongole, Andhra Pradesh. Mr. Irudayam, represented by then Indian Airlines, has won the championship for the ninth time, and made history of being the only player in Indian to hold 9 carrom national championship wins. May the force be with him.

I have met him few times in 90s during State Championship Matches... An unassuming calm cool person. He is undoubtedly our unsung hero. Thanks for this Video compilation. Now at the age of 62, I wish to try out my Carrom skills once again. 💖♥️💖

It was all about carrom and cricket in our childhood days literally carom board was the only thing we used to ask our parents on birthdays but now it's all about crying for an iPhone or gaming phone just for the sake of PUBG or COD. Glad my childhood was never like today's new gen.

What his dad said was true my friend. In a country dominated by only sport which is cricket. There is no way anyone can shine in anyother game apart from it. Carrom is a good game but unfortunatly there is no scope for it in a country where your mom and dad scold you for playing.

I wholeheartedly congratulate Maria Irudhayam World Carrom Champion and the way he is presently involved in training future champions. I salute him. I am very lucky to see this video. Even though Carrom is a very popular indoor game in India, it hasn’t received the attention it richly deserves mainly because of Cricket. It needs plenty of patience, discipline, dedication, concentration, skill and regular practice to achieve certain level in it. I have been playing Carrom since my childhood. However I had to give up for nearly four decades on account of job and other commitments.

The only way to promote such sport is to get it included in Olympics or Commomwealth games or Asian games. Then the interest in it will skyrocket and sponsors will also join in. This way the players can take the sport as a career.

When cricket is synonym of sports in India,we cannot expect any other game to be accepted or recognized. If he was a cricketer,would have received every award; right from Arjuna to Padmashree ,etc. His achievement has made him proud and his people around him,no need for the Government to give him an identity through awards. The same fate hit my grandpa, he was an elite volleyball player but bloody cricket always took the spotlight , and hence no proper recognition was given to him nor volleyball. Those empty stadiums made him feel unimportant, his talent saw the last days when he finally retired but still depressed because of the corruption involved in selection for national team. He hates cricket and politics for that reason.
