My mother's cousin worked for the Rolls Royce factory in Springfield, MA in the 1920's. I remember him saying that they would test the engines for vibrations by placing a glass of water on top of it and looking at the ripples created by the running engine. They would calibrate the engine until there were no ripples left. Crude yet effective!
@karentrimmer
@karentrimmer Жыл бұрын
I recall a TV ad, when I was a child back in the 60s, showing a glass of water on the hood of a car that was on a machine the car would drive on without actually going anywhere. As you mentioned, it was to show the low vibration as there was just a slight ripple in the water. I don't recall which make of car it was for.

Not going to lie, imay have shed a tear or two, remembering my late dad, who was such a car guy, and restored a few cars of his own-primarily Chryslers and Dodges. He would have loved this for sure! I swear there wasn’t anything he didn’t know about antique cars- makes, models, years, engines, special feature-you name it! But he had a special place in his heart for Auburns, Cords, and Deusenburgs, and he visited the museum in Auburn Indiana every year during their ACD Days celebration. Good memories!

Alex, you were very good at this sit down. Interviewing people and hearing their stories of why they do what they do is interesting as well as seeing their interest. I'm sure there are endless amounts of fascinating people there with not only stories but hobbies to go along with them. Weather it's eccentric people just enjoying life and their love for things or modest laid back people like Howard, I enjoy it. It reminded me of a long loved weekend show called the Texas Country Reporter. Now it's episodes are on youtube. If you ever hear of or come across more people with time capsule basements again, I would love to see more of those too. Well done!! The cat is so cute. I always enjoy your jokes LOL

Just lots of work for many years. Not getting married probably made quite a difference also Howard

Wow. Really interesting! When my wife and I were married we were in Cape Town and had chauffer-driven 1935 (I think) 20/25 Rolls Royce as our wedding car. The gentleman that owned it was the chauffer (of course!). He also had a an old polished aluminium 1925 Phantom that was once owned by some Maharajah in India. It was actually the car I wanted for our wedding car, but my wife opted for the 20/25 because it was so windy on the day. That's Cape Town! Interesting the description he gives of "quarter-sawn" wood. To a sawyer, there are three types of cut woods: plain/flat-sawn, quarter-sawn and rift-sawn, and it depends on where the wood is taken from the log. Looking at the end grain, if the growth rings are arched, the board is considered plain or flat sawn. If they are are steeply angled, they're quarter-sawn, and if they are less steeply angled, the board is considered rift-sawn. Plain-sawn wood can cup; quarter-sawn is more stable and the back and front of the board has the same grain pattern. Rift-sawn is also stable but will also have grain on the edges. The sawyer achieves quarter-sawn grain by cutting the log into four quarters along the length of the log, and then each quarter is cut into planks at a 45 degree angle, like slices in a pie.
@DenisPeel
