200 million girls in 31 countries across the world have undergone FGM. (UNICEF) Somalia has the highest cases, where 98% of girls between the ages of 5-11 have reportedly undergone the practice (UNICEF). The COVID-19 pandemic has made the situation worse as there have been reports of door-to-door FMG occurring during the period schools closed and all the girls were at home. To engage community leaders to create local platforms to raise awareness about FGM and open dialogue, CARE Somalia created national and district-level FGM Task Forces.
