My landscape boss runs classic trucks. His first was a '73 f250 ranger. I drove that last year, it has some steering play and it doesn't have power brakes, which is tough, but it's insanely reliable. Now it's his side piece, but still a cool truck

No doubt my father had a 73 f 250 manual he always said chevy was more comfortable, dodge power wagons were rugged but those older ford's were solid beasts if you took care of them.

Be sure to throw a gun rack in the back window. Hang a 30-30 Winchester and a Remington 870 Express Magnum 12ga to make it look authentic to the '70's.

John Purdum Not everyone lives in crime ridden cities, some of us live in small rural towns out in the middle of nowhere. And, we are packing on top of what's in the window if you want to take the chance. Certainly, take them inside at night. You never know when supper is going to cross the road, like a couple of roosters or a big buck.

so jealous! high boy is my dream truck. bought a '65 250 camper special with a 460 4spd granny gear when i was 17. called it the head knocker cuz every time you got near the gas it through your head back into the rear glass. absolutely loved it. wasnt a 4x4 so eventually i sold it cuz of that and it had no heater and didnt like to start in the cold, as well as about 8mpg thundering through town. miss it dearly but will one day have a high boy. damn good buy !
@Believe231

So glad Mr Truck was with you, that kind of real world experience is needed when checking out something like you just bought. First thing I'd do is go over the fuel system to be sure it's not leaking anywhere. Then go thru the entire braking system and make sure it's solid, and if something is in doubt, replace it using a decent brand, like Motorcraft, or see if a certified Ford restoration part exists for it. Then while doing that, check the suspension and steering parts for wear. Then I'd look into the wiring (interior wiring as well) to see if it appears to be crumbling or been hacked up as the last thing you'd want to see is it go up in flames due to faulty wiring. Here's to hoping you'll have many enjoyable moments with your "new" Rusty Boy!

I had a 73 that was a doctor's truck. He bought it new and had a cab high camper put on it and the shop put a plywood covered with foam and carpet in it also. He pull a travel trailer all over the country when his children were little, he said they rode in the back and played and slept as needed. He said he would travel for 4-6 weeks during the summer, and they had hit all lower 48 and Canada and Alaska. I remember riding in the back of pickup's, you would go to jail for that now. I bought it 2003 and came home from work on day 2018 and the truck was gone, asked the wife who was borrowing the truck? She told me that she Donated it to the disabled vets. She was in hot water for a long time.

Congrats Tommy, that's a great truck! You're going to have a lot of fun fixing it up that beast, and it's definitely going to be a learning experience. My dad and I fixed up a 73 Chevy K10 when I was in high school, it was a great time. I loved that truck, I still kick myself for selling it. I'm a GM guy mostly (I LOVE Big Green), but I've always liked that style Ford. Interesting note about the Highboy, I realized they sat higher, but had no idea about the divorced transfer car. That's pretty beefy right there. Ford def built some solid trucks back in the day, looks like you have a closed knuckle Dana 60 up front, and the shift pattern on the t-case lever makes me think it's a NP205. Good luck with it!

You are going through the same thing I did! i bought a 1975 F-250 highboy that is identical to that one but has a 4 speed and is yellow. Has zero rust but the paint is mismatched and looks terrible but runs so good. It didnt run went i got it but after a bit of fixing and tuning up all i have to do is touch the key and fires up even in really cold weather. Its the most reliable truck ive ever bought, I drove it a 100 miles every day for my job and not once did it ever let me down. All I paid for mine was 1200! I dont know what part of the country you guys are at but those trucks around here are half the price and in way better shape. That aside I would love to see the same thing happen to Rusty Boy as Big Green!!!

Love your old Ford I had a 73 ford that was a rocket off the line. Nice trucks just watch where the cab attaches to the frame, they rust and it is not as noticeable as rust elsewhere. I hope you have a lot of fun working on it and driving it, especially if you spend time with the old man. I wish one of my kids liked vehicles and wanted to work on something with me. I still have a 1987 suburban that needs some work and hoped to do it with one of my kids but they are not into it.

Awesome project ! My first truck was a 1981 with 4 speed , 300 straight six. That was a great combo. I miss the old granny gear 4 speed. If Ford was smart they would reintroduce the custom. Make it a single cap 302 , design a six speed with a granny low first gear. Free wheeling front hubs. My favorite thing to do was run the truck thru the transfer in 2 wheel drive and crawl the beach. So much fun to see how well you could drive without getting stuck. If you did turn the hubs reengage the transfer and crawl on. It will never happen too many peeps want a truck to be a office on wheels, smooth ride and all the creature comforts. Sad times.

I wish my parents were like this. My mom and stepdad are against me owning a car as a teenager in general. I've always been into cars and I would like to work on a fox body mustang someday before I go to college. Oh well, life isn't always fair.
