This is the first episode in a new mini-series, introducing you to some of the birds I work with.
In this video I give a brief overview of my beautiful 10 year old barn owl who has been with me for most of his life. I will talk about how I got him, what makes barn owls so amazing and what I love about working with him.
Hope you can take 10 minutes out of your stressful day to enjoy something a bit different!

I once opened a hay loft door on a barn, saw movement in the dark, something came right at me. Was a barn owl just like this one, talons first. I managed to duck in time, luckily. It had it's nest up there and was trying to protect it's chicks. The owner of the barn and I decided to leave them be, and waited for the owlets to fly out before returning. Was a close call, but I still think they're awesome birds.

I live in a small caravan way out in the sticks & leaves and I have the pleasure of being greeted with a barn owl that passes by me nearly every morning and most evenings. I regularly find pellets in my shed and recently set up a camera close by. Unsurprisingly any noise from my caravan instantly alerts this beautiful bird and that's why I've never bumped into it when I'm outside. However I never fail to be wonderfully impressed and joyful every time I see it fly by.

I just want to take a second to thank you for what your doing here. Lots of people don't like falconry purely because they don't understand it, or because what they've experienced from it has been bad. You're doing a lot to show that that's wrong and falconry can be excellent when done properly. For me personally these videos are really helpful too since I volunteer at a small falconry center and whilst I know a lot of the information in the videos already it's nice to pick up on new ideas and ways of doing things. Lots of people are appericating what your doing and it shows, particularly through your sub count tripling in the last few days. So thanks!

He’s lovely...I rescue pigeons, so, quite a different bird experience, but I love hearing all sorts of wild animal rescue stories; seeing him sitting so comfortably on your hand warms my heart. Thank you for sharing him with us!

I'm impressed he's so light! I have a ball python who's about 850 grams, and when he's in a ball he's about as big as Flynn's head, maybe smaller. I've known birds are light, but that gave me a really clear impression of how light!

He's an absolutely beautiful bird! Barn Owls are my personal favorite birds of prey. I do quite like corvids as well as scavenger birds, like vultures and buzzards, as well.

Flynn is beautiful and his health is a credit to you. Flynn's assymetrical ears (with respect to up and down) gives him the ability to localise (slightly) in the vertical plane. The structure of Flynn's feathers works three ways. As you mentioned, the first way is to quieten his flight for predation, especially with the spiked profile of the feathers which encourages a laminar flow of air. The feathers also work to reduce wind noise when he is listening for targets. And lastly , the feathers tend to trap air molecules, reducing the propagation velocity of sound at the boundary between his body (near the ears) and the air around him. That slow down in sound effectively increases the distance between his ears for localisation, changing (slightly) or improving his ability to localise. The difference in time of arrival of sound , between the two ears , is accentuated for sounds coming at an angle to Flynn. Sound normally travels at 1mm per 3.45 microseconds. With the feathers , it's slightly longer. Love your talks. George

I absolutely love owls. There is a large Barred Owl that lives in the wooded area behind my home and it's always such a treat to see him during walks. He's very inquisitive and pays close attention to my every move.
