I worked for a large corporate law firm in NYC. There wasn't a single black attorney in either of the two main offices. There were black and brown men and women in the copy room. A common practice among some of the paralegals was to claim that the copy room frequently messed up document jobs, either printing or copying, just to have an excuse to work overtime. I never found that to be true and enjoyed taking moments of my day chatting with the hard working, attentive and diligent individuals in the copy room. After I made it clear that I wasn't going to go along with the lie, or other lies, the firm started having me watched while I worked trying to find me doing something wrong or unethical. My officemate was a very immature young woman who would often complain to me about her friend who was one of two black paralegals working in that large firm and tell me how scared she was of her boyfriend's friend who was also their roommate. She said he often glared at her. This young man was either Iranian, or Pakistani, or something along those lines. Once I explained to her that the young man's culture was different from ours and an unmarried couple living together and sharing a bed is not the norm. After this she told everyone that I was a racist. It didn't surprise me because I knew that she was encouraged to find something shockingly wrong with me, and like I said she was very immature -and very much pro the firm. Because I knew I was being watched I also commented on the lack of diversity. A year later several young black attorneys were hired. This is the reality. The confederate attitude was never really crushed.

Interesting. History is coming back at us with a vengeance, between the Civil War / slavery, and the "end" of the Cold War. What I have learned from these turn of events is that people have deep, long-seated resentments that seldom go away. Only when there is a painful war that people start to seek peace, it seems. And those memories are typically and relatively short, alas.

Some would argue that the harsh conditions of the antebellum South farther deepened the rifts and created even more bitterness among whites towards newly liberated African-Americans, though that bitterness may have persisted regardless. In any event, I don't think it's fair to blame the pure, distilled evil that is Stephen Miller on a whole geographic section of the US.

People should do some deep dive Googling about Miller, and his handler, Bannon. I'm serious. I did this about 6 yrs ago, and was horrified. Miller is Bannon's creature, through and through. Bannon placed Miller by Trump's side, coached him on exactly what to do and say to work Trump, and Bannon's plan was successful far beyond their expectations!
