In the Golden Girls pilot episode, the director told her NO southern accent, so she did her Oklahoma accent. When the show was picked up, there was a new director, who DID want a southern accent. Good interview on KZfaq with Rue, about it.

Yes, Betty was the oldest, followed by Bea, then Estelle then Rue. Estelle, who played Bea's "Ma" was almost a year younger than Bea! But that white wig and little to no make-up and big glasses made her look older, and her sometimes tottering steps -- all an act! The 4 of them were SO good in their parts! I think people blow the Bea and Betty thing out of proportion. Betty Did say Bea wasn't fond of her but she didn't make it sound like there was some nasty rivalry or feud. They just clashed sometimes and older people tend to be that way. They just say it all but their chemistry was undeniable.

This was, for me, the very first show of my youth to become a “safe space” show in later adult years. Whenever I face uncertainty or disappointment I add it to my dinner. It renews my faith in humanity. And never more a tonic than in the Winter months. I’ve since been able to add Everybody Loves Raymond, and Downton Abbey to that list. And I feel so grateful to have them at my disposal. Escapism and positivity at it’s finest.

People love gossip so much. When you watch the body language in this segment, how on Earth could you believe Bea didn't like Betty. Betty might have gotten on her nerves, or irked her from time to time. But you don't rest against or stroke the hair of someone you completely can't stand. It's like the telephone game. One person says something and the whole thing is blown out of proportion. Betty said Bea wasn't fond of her, but she adored and admired Bea. Does that sound like Bea hated her guts? Get real.
@michaelleacy
@michaelleacy 10 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that she hated her guts they just weren't friends. That happens. You can work with someone you don't particularly like - you don't have to be friendly all the time but can be pleasant enough to them

If you watch the Christopher Lloyd interview for the American Television Archive, he says there was a little tension between them simply because they were so different. Betty was so good at playing to the audience, and (surprisingly) Bea was not, at least out of character. The two are such good actresses, that anything less than the friendship portrayed onscreen in real life is surprising to people. They were colleagues and respected each other. That's it.

It's interesting that all the girls said they wanted to play Sophia's role since she has the funniest lines. But as a diehard fan of this show and what gay man isn't i felt that Bea Arthur's sarcastic wit often thrown at Rose was over the top funny. At least in my opinion it was. There were a few times i nearly wet myself with her witty comebacks towards Rose. So my favorite character was Bea as Dorothy. And honestly even though the part of Blanche was originally supposed to go to Betty White. I don't think she would have done as good a job with it. I feel the part of Rose was PERFECT for her since she's such a nice person in real life and has a passion for animals the innocence of Rose's character fit her perfectly. And the same goes for Rue playing Blanche. It was a PERFECT cocktail that can NEVER be repeated. For one god bless them all the girls have passed on except for Betty White. So a "reunion show" is totally not possible now. And secondly nobody else could ever duplicate these 5 star actors. God knows Britain tried and failed MISERABLY in doing so. No folks this show is a timeless classic like All in The Family. Never to be duplicated again. But at least we have the memories of re-watching the episodes all over again and again. And they never get old in my opinion.

To me Bea Arthur is not the type of person that would lie. In last season of the Golden Girls, she gave an interview on season 7 - dvd, stating that they were all very close, she also mentioned that she missed working on the Golden Girls. She also said that the four of them were all damn good actresses. If see the interview she is crying because she miss working on The Golden Girls.

They were very close in Season 1. In fact, Bea - being an introvert - wouldn't go to lunch with Rue unless her friend Betty joined. Bea and Betty were also the primary caretakers to their very sick mothers. Their mothers ended up dying around the same time, and they got through it with the support of each other. Perhaps Betty winning the Emmy first caused the initial rift because Bea's son said he felt his mom thought she was more of an actress than Betty since his mom came from the stage, and Betty was on game shows. But those were his words, not Bea's. I personally believe it's more likely their conflicting personalities and acting philosophies resulted in them drifting apart. But I don't think there was any hate or disrespect or this never ending feud. It makes for a good story, but if stuff was really going down, it should have come out before Bea's death when she could have shared her side. Bea's son summed it up when he said Bea had problems with Betty, but still liked her.
