In 1985 this show became a MASSIVE hit, no one had ever seen older women portrayed like this before. They were sexually active, they were always talking about sex, they would insult each other quite savagely, and the show dealt with topics that were groundbreaking. What really made the show such a big hit was that it appealed to all ages. I was in high school in 1985-1990 and most of the kids watched it, and quoted from it.

I was a kid when this show came out so I didn't understand alot of the social issues and jokes at the time but now as an adult I love this show; they really conquered and brought so many social issues to the forefront when most ppl just whispered about them

Unfortunate it is true that some people in places like Alabama and in North York too might believe when first meeting a character like Dorothy only a lot younger -- would make a really good nurse to people living in a nursing home when trying to hide what they are really thinking about concerning the people whom they are caring for the whole time there. While characters like Sophia only a lot younger would be a good hire to serve as a psychiatrist too. Both always hiding their true thoughts about whom they insist they need to be paid in order to keep on serving them. I heard ahead of time on the internet that care giving school has way more than one younger than me student character like that who is determined to stand out among the rest. I better be prepared when working on myself in care giving school well enough instead of dreaming how well I am and how I will in the' future stand out among the rest.

This show is like, unnaturally good for a sitcom , and it is because all 4 of the main actresses are comedic geniuses. I'm in my 30s now, but i watched reruns of this show back when i was 9 in Jamaica, and Sophia was ALWAYS my favourite. They truly don't make stuff like this anymore

i was around 10 when my grandmother introduced me to the golden girls, and loved it immediately. my grandma passed and i still watch it to this very day at 22, and it will always hold a special place in my heart

I always loved that in the script, Sophia’s one liner’s were always a result of her character having a stroke and causing her brain to remove it’s filter. So basically she said whatever came to mind 😂 her and Dorothy were the dynamic duo of making ppl look stupid lol

My mother and I were always quoting the “you’re only gonna sit in an inch of water?” exchange 🤣 She’s gone now and I miss her so much, we watched Golden Girls together since I was a tiny little kid. The summer I was 14, lifetime would have these endless marathons and I’d just park myself on the end of her bed all day and well into the night.
