An up-close and personal sit down interview with Estelle Getty (July 25, 1923 -- July 22, 2008). After 40 years of being a struggling actress, Estelle finally hit pay dirt with "The Golden Girls". (Did you know that she also guest starred in Cher's Mask and Dustin Hoffman's Tootsie?) In 1992, Estelle starred along side Sylvester Stallone in the charming film "Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot".
A very candid and real look at one of the most wonderful & intelligent comediennes of our time.
Best Quotes from this interview:
"If there are two things in this world that you want to do and one of them is acting, do the other! Because it's the toughest business in the world!"
"Was it worth it for me, you bet! You bet because I won the lottery! I was one of the people who made it. It took me a long time but success is sweet at any age! I mean it's like everything that I ever dreamed of in my life came true!"
"I will NOT do gay bashing jokes! I don't make jokes about beating women! I won't do it!"

I think Estelle is a hero. Many think to have a career in the arts you have to start very young, but we have seen over time the damage and pain young child stars go through when they are in the entertainment business as children/teens, most if not all experience similar hardships. Don't give up on your dreams, even if people say it will never happen, you are on your own in this life and only you can be who you want to be. Life is too short not to be who you are!

It's hard to recognize her without her white wig! She was only about a year older than Bea, who played her daughter in GG. It was a great casting because Estelle got some of the best lines in those episodes, because a cranky, half-senile old woman could get by with talking like she did, where the others could certainly not have, and it made for a lot of funny lines!

The Golden Girls was my lighthouse during a dark and turbulent time. The AIDS epidemic was in full swing and there was very little to smile about, during those days. Every other week, another friend or associate died. Some of us used to joke about which Golden Girl we identified with the most. I thought I was most like Dorothy, but my friends said, I reminded them of Blanche. In the end, I was more like Rose... because I am the only one left.

She was great and got the most fan mail so when some were concerned about her inability to memorize lines; producers reminded them she got the most fan mail. She had a health problem starting that was part of the cause of memory problem and I read she had terrible stage fright and would know all her lines in practice then forget them day of filming but they would tape things up for her to read and she did a great job making it look spontaneous and that's hard to do as a person who has been to acting school and former model. Maybe one day, I will get back in the business and do a comedy but I don't want any Star role in anything. Just someone in background doing jokes.
@stevarino1989
@stevarino1989 9 жыл бұрын
yeah, I heard a couple stories from people who attended tapings, and that Bea would get mad at poor Estelle because she had trouble with her lines. someone even said that she made her cry. I am sure (and I hope) Bea apologized and Estelle forgave her--nobody really knew it was dementia just yet. I would've loved to meet Estelle. Hard to believe she played a white haired 80-something senior citizen from Sicily, lol

Who the help out 11 thumbs down wth??? 🌹🌺🌷🌸 She NEVER GAVE UP..THAT I ADMIRE AND AT 51 AND I NEED GREAT INSPIRATIONS FROM SOME PEOPLE WHOTOOK RISK AND DIDNT ALWAYS MAKE IT 100% SO TO ME ALOT OF SO celebrity not so great anymore after I saw her what that Insight life is so what I found is they just had more check and money and somebody that saw a few good things in them and made them a Big Sky even though they weren't you deserve inside of it and it went to the heads too many times and it still does for any type of higher position not even just acting.!!! That was a spell you get the real deal you know she probably doesn't mention a husband for some reason to keep some privacy and now that I am Maya to but at the same time trying to be a mom and and had me kid still not 100% knowing what you do and even being embarrassed I get that! But now they're all proud of her but of course that always happen to children when they get older and the luck we as adults were made aware that that's how it probably will be when you are a celebrity and the kids intimidated or want to do the same thing is you. It's not always on the agenda I hugged a life to do it that's why so many lose their children at such a young age because you can't follow in somebody else's footsteps that already has made a big deal for themselves but that doesn't mean you still can't make something of your life that me just as much as what your mom or dad. Nobody needs to thank they ever have to be a millionaire or a big celebrity to be respected kid and loved by others but it can help ..she did Awesome!!! Miss you Estella!!!! Anyone else think the narrator was kind of rude about Estelle being a "nobody". Also, it's so sad that near the end the interviewer asked if Estelle would get to play Sophia again in 20 years, since not only did she die before that could happen, but she also got so sick 10 years after this that she couldn't even act anymore. I always wondered what it would have been like if they did something like a "Reboot" episode.

not a very good interviewer here, she just "gushes" all over Estelle Getty and just allows Getty to say all kinds of things without challenging her on anything. Ms. Getty asserts that she was not into "bashing" but her character, "Sophia" was "bashing" nearly all the time on "The Golden Girls," her character probably had some of the best lines making fun of fat people or gays appearing on the show, sadly, you begin to wonder that perhaps Ms. Getty was already in the early stages of dementia, when she gave this interview.

Her nephew was gay. She cared for him while he had AIDS and his immediate could not. She openly supported gay rights. Do you dislike Carroll O'Conner because Archie Bunker was a bigot? It was a TV character. She didn't write the lines or create the character.

oh please, "Sophia" was always making jokes about gays, fat people etc. I don't give a shit that her nephew was gay, what does that have to do with her character??
