Technically speaking, JDAM refers to a kit that is bolted onto the U.S. military’s general-purpose Mk-80-series bomb and turns it into a GPS-guided weapon. It comes in three sizes, corresponding to different bomb weights: the 500lb Mk-82 bomb, the 1,000lb Mk-83 bomb, and the 2,000lb Mk-84 bomb.

I was stationed at Edwards AFB, 412th EMS back in 1998 and worked as an ammo troop in the bomb dump. I was on the test team for the JDAM before it was implemented.

@@kani6855 No, it wont Modern munitions are built with insensitive explosives and fuzes to prevent such accidents On the ground , there are also safety pins in pins that are not removed till the aircraft is ready to take off The US military has enough accidents to where Insensitive munitions are required for everything

I built the bunkers for ALCM conversion.( Aircraft Launched Cruise Missiles). at Barksdale AFB in '86. SAC, MAC & TAC, I worked coast to coast on our military infrastructure for 30 years.

This is what happens when you let your citizens be intelligent. Give them a job at Raytheon. Places like Russia and China lock up smart individuals that could possibly build such weapons usually as political prisoners. Those governments fear a smart citizen, whereas we employ them. @@axwest1 Those Russian glide bombs are cheap trash and are said to have a high failure rate. There was a picture of a failed unexploded one in Ukraine and the add on wing kit looked like cheap old scrap metal cut with a sawzall. Just another example of them yet again trying to copy effective US ideas, as always.

A winged JDAM-ER was developed at Boeing Australia of which was an excellent idea. Question? a powered 500lb PJDAM with a range of 300 miles ............ is it stealthy and can it fit in a F-35 bomb bay?

Similar to the Russian fab bombs except they have their own propulsion system further extending their range. Pretty cool but I honestly can’t tell what the difference this would be from a cruise missile.

I wonder what will happened if JDAMs werw used without GPS? will they use a Laser Guidance Kit on a nose of the Bomb in case if GPS was jammed or unavailable?

Jdams have backup inertial guidance so if no gps is available or being jammed it still gets close to the programmed aim point I believe they also have a home on jamming mode. In Iraq thee US used jdams to take out Iraqi jamming towers

The flaps of such bombs can cause the bomb to hit a side wall of a dropped bomb. Soldiers forget to lubricate the servos, which is very important or else the bomb disappears.

@@markbrisec3972 i suspect it would be less cheaper and easier to put together… not to mention the different variates of aircraft that can carry it.. like imagine the f-15 load with 12 of them.. or f-16… or even the f-35 and f-22 they all can carry JDAMs but none can carry the massive cruise missiles like the b-52

Lol, they work there at the speed of transporting ammunition, hundreds of targets are destroyed every day, from reconnaissance drones to Hymars ballistic missiles. 3:00 - Notice the rough-finish coating on these bombs (as well as the rolling carts they're strapped to). These are Navy bombs, specially coated with flame retardant, to minimize having them "cook off" during an onboard fire event.

The B1-B carries 125,000 lbs of these. Lets do the math! Mk-82 ? 250 individual Bombs. They load these onto "Rotary Bomb Racks" so the plane can take its sweet time on Target to deploy.

Why can't Ukrainians attach JDAMs to huge hydrogen balloons and let it glide long ways, when released from 100,000 feet or before the balloon bursts? The balloon is transparent to radar and a bomb rising is too small and slow to be picked up by air defense. The prevailing wind in Ukraine is from west to east. When Chernobyl happened most of Russia got the fall out cuz of this wind. That's how I learned about it.
