Some spry senior citizens from Raleigh, North Carolina, play on a basketball team called the Fabulous 70’s. The women, who range in age from 75 to 81, play against other athletes in the North Carolina Senior Games. Along with local tournaments, the ladies compete at the state level for a shot at making it the National Senior Games, which will be held this year in Birmingham, Alabama, in June.

Judy Barton, who has been playing in the league for the past 23 years, is one of the team’s most dedicated members.
“Of the original five gals that played the first game on our team, three of us are still actively playing,” Barton, 81, told The Post.
Instead of playing traditional five-on-five basketball, the Fabulous 70’s play three-on-three, which allows them to rotate positions on the court.
“It’s a much faster game. You have to move faster, you have to pass faster,” Barton told The Post, adding that many people doubt her abilities until they see her play.
“They can’t believe that we can be athletes at our age. Especially women, you know, unless they see us play. Once they see us play, then they change their attitude,” Barton told The Post.
Barton, who has been playing basketball since 1949, never misses an opportunity to shoot hoops. The diehard lover of the game even graced the court in a tournament when she was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.
“If you perk up your attitude you take a more positive approach and you look at the glass half full rather than half empty, you’d be surprised at what you can do,” Barton said.
