Long Distance relationships are HARD very very very HARD, As Dan Savage likes to say "long distance relationships never work out... except when they do." And yes, the DO work out but you have to have a PLAN for one of you to eventually more. We did long distance (Dave - SF / Eric - London) for 5 years. Yes it SUCKS, but you can do it if you have a plan. Here is what worked for us. 1) Talk EVERY day. (Be it on Skype, FB, Phone, whatever..) and talk about the normal BORING Stuff, the "so how was your day?" kinda stuff. Be as connected to each other's ordinary life as much as you can... which also means.. 2) When you do visit each other, don't always have it be a vacation. Visit each other and see your "regular" non-holiday life. When you get up for work, your commute, grocery shopping, laundry, your everyday friends and family etc. Don't have every visit be some romantic road trip somewhere. You need to experience each others boring everyday life as well. 3) Involve your friends! If your friends are not on board with this whole thing, forget it, it's doomed. Because you will NEED your friends as a support network for those times when everyone around you seems coupled off and horribly happy and you are sitting with them all in the bar or restaurant staring at your phone wondering why there are no new messages. 4) RELAX. Yes this is hard but not impossible. Realise that sometimes the other person cant text you back right away, especially if there are significant time differences between you. So if you don't hear back right that minute it doesn't mean the other person doesn't care. 5) TRUST is not optional its mandatory. You need to understand that distance may make the heart grow fonder but it also sends the imagination into overdrive. "Hanging out with co-workers" is not code for "Shagging random strangers" You need to both talk about what you need to be comfortable. And yes, you need to have the "ground rules discussion" so you both are on the same page. It can work though and it makes the day you finally end the distance that much sweeter.

This is like my boyfriend and I's story! I lived in Atlanta, GA and he lived in New York. We have been together about three years and this summer is two years dating! We met on Tumblr and started talking on Kik too, and then started texting and FaceTiming. He has driven from New York to Atlanta TWICE now and I have flown up to see him twice. Long distance sucks at first, but it's so worth it. Now we live together in New York where we have a house and both have our own jobs. Keep going guys!
