When driving in a built-up area we will often find obstacles in our path that we will need to steer around. This will usually involve driving on the other side of the road - but we must ensure that we do not obstruct oncoming traffic that is driving towards us. This is called ‘meeting traffic’ and in this video, we will show how to handle this situation safely by using good anticipation and planning skills.

* 0:00 Introduction
* 1:16 Who has the priority?

Advance Driving School hi do you think I need to find another driving instructor. I am currently doing driving lessons with RED and they going well. On 4th July 2018 I needed to cancel my driving lesson because my work contacted me and said they need me ASAP because it's busy and they need staff. I told my instructor and he said that's fine I cancel it but I have to charge you for that lesson as it was a short notice as I need to tell him within 48 hours. I have to pay £49 and it's not my fault that the place I work was busy and they needed me in.
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 6 жыл бұрын
But it's not your instructors fault that his time was wasted. How would you like it if your work kept saying 'we don't need you today' and you couldn't earn money. Of course, it's not your fault either so it might be worth asking your instructor if they would accept half of the amount? Or ask your work to pay as it's their fault? It's a tricky one...

Thanks for these videos. Find them so useful. I have only had 6 lessons, but already met oncoming traffic, find it scary first time I did it but I am finding the more you do it, the more you get used to it, thats the same with everything. Its all practice and knowing what to do and when. It takes time. There is so much to remember from theory and applying to practice, everybody learns differently, different rates.. I seem to be good at steering but its everything else I struggle with. I am a anxious person anyway and at start of lessons I get anxiety, but my instructor just said dont worry and keep calm and do it gradually and it really helped calm my nerves for rest of lesson. I know in time it will be second nature. Partly I think I am still thinking inside the car as well as outside, when I start thinking outside more I will get better. I am finding its a skill in itself when to stop and when to go when meeting oncoming traffic

These roads cause anxiety. My instructor had to stop the car because I tried to squeeze through where there were double parked cars and an oncoming car. I'm normally on two wheels so i would usually get through! I've got to be really careful with this!
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 6 жыл бұрын
That's actually a fairly common occurrence, as it takes a little while to get used to the amount of space we need to safely drive a car through. If you're not sure, stopping is the safest option!

(Matt Owens Rees) An excellent video Interpreting what a driver may mean when he flashes his lights is always problematical. As you say, it should only be an indication of one's presence. In the UK it can often be ambiguous: "I'm coming through" or " I'm letting YOU through" In Thailand, where I now live it always means "I'm coming through". Obviously, that can't be assumed in other countries. Best to take it as an indication of presence only. It a good feature of driving here though as it's not ambiguous. Apart from that, Thai drivers are not that reliable or skilled. 2nd highest road death rate in the world. flashing

@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 6 жыл бұрын
The use of the indicators when passing parked cars is optional and down to your judgement of whether it will be useful to others or not. We usually indicate if we need to stop behind a parked car (so others know we aren’t parked) but don’t if we can keep rolling (as our road position shows others what we are doing) HTH 👍🏼

Great video with good explanation. I need more practice on this and my instructor has said I need to my mirrors effectively when changing speed and direction. For example - if there are parked cars on the left (WHICH MIRROR DO I LOOK INTO FIRST)?? Is it centre mirror? I need to know the sequence and right steps as it confuses me and the same for the left if cars are parked on the right hand side. Which mirror? Also what if cars are parked on both sides.

@AdvanceDrivingSchool

I failed my 2nd test because of an uphill residential road with parked cars on both sides. There were barely any gaps I could pull into with a long stream of traffic coming down towards me. We could just about pass each other but I got too close to the parked cars on my left so the examiner had to intervene. Any tips for this, as it's a road close to the test centre so will probably do it again...
@AdvanceDrivingSchool

We always recommend leaving a ‘doors width’ gap to any parked car. If we can’t leave this much space then we must slow right down or even stop. If you think it might be a squeeze to fit through a gap, just stop as it’s not worth the risk. 👍🏼

What is the general reference point to know you are 1 metre away from parked cars on the left hand side?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 5 жыл бұрын
There is no general reference point, as it will vary for different driving positions and types of car. If you pause the video as we drive past a car with the drivers view showing, you can see how it looks for us - but it will be different for you (unless you are 6 foot 2 inches tall and driving a Kia Rio!). To find out your own reference point you could carefully stop next to a parked car with a metre (roughly a doors width) gap, and then see how it looks from your position. Then next time you pass a car try to line it up the same. Good luck!

Hello. If I see parked cars on my side of the road and a approaching car can I continue to drive slowly if there 1 or 2 feet space between me and the approaching car? If yes it means I will cause that car to also slow down and move closer to their kerb which means It will be a fault as I should not force cars who has priority to change their speed or direction. Thanks
@AdvanceDrivingSchool

The basic principle to remember is that we can’t do anything that will force another driver to take action (such as changing their speed or position) if they have priority. So in your example we would wait for the other driver to pass before continuing.

I get really anxious about meeting traffic in narrow road with parked cars in both sides but with just enough space for 2 cars to pass. I slow down,almost stopping while the oncoming car just whizzes past. The car behind me usually beeps. How can I get over this fear?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 6 жыл бұрын
It’s good to be careful, but also to make progress when you can. Just keep practicing! PS have to seen our other video ‘Meeting traffic in double-parked streets’?

+Nikhil thakur We try to concentrate on one skill at a time in our videos - so we’ll show the feet when necessary, but not in every video as we don’t want to ‘clutter’ the screen with too much detail at one time.

This video was filmed before the change to the Highway Code. If that happened now, and it was safe to do so we would consider stopping.

@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 6 жыл бұрын
+Mohamed Emad There is no need to hold the wheel any tighter - in fact if you grip the wheel too tightly it can make it hard to feel the ‘feedback’ from the front wheels.

What is the speed limit on that road?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 2 жыл бұрын
Since there are street lamps but no other signs, the speed limit is 30mph.

Haha... Entire video i found only one cyclist. In india we found reverse situation. Things can be worse if we find more cycles and motor bikes. So please do interesting videos with full of traffic where pedestrians cycles bikes children etc

Thanks for your comment. In the UK there are far less cyclists - we only see one or two per day where we live!

If the obstruction is on your side of the road then you should give way to oncoming cars as you will need to borrow the wrong side of the road to get around the obstruction. 🙃
