You can find many similarities between American and saudi streets (e.g. ATM drive thru). That's why its hard to find decent pavement and sidewalks to use. However, the new approach in riyadh is re designing the street to be more pedestrian friendly (riyadh metro project). You should visit riyadh

Hello, welcome to Saudi Arabia. In Saudi it's rare for us to walk to places because of the heat that's why a lot of places aren't designed for walking. You actually got sun burnt at what it seems a cooler weather LOL. If you want places to visit I'm no expert but I think you should go to Riyadh or Abha which has great weather or visit Al hasa that city I know very well and has a lot of places that are interesting. You Must Have Al Baik.. It's Famous Restaurant Of Saudi Arabia

I'm Saudi from the east part of the country where the oil comes from the thing about our country is that it's really safe (Yeah there is some shady small areas like any other country that's jsut part of life) but in general it's really really safe and you could walk outside late night or anytime it's fine. The thing about not talking too much that it looks like you been out around the noon or after noon time and we as Saudi people either work or study so we either busy or avoid going outside around the time of noon or late morning so we adopt the night life mentality in most regions in this country! plus we don't see western people or people from anywhere as an odd thing so maybe we just opened for tourism but we seen people from all around the world who been coming here for work so it's not an alien thing that we never seen and maybe that's why people avoid talking or looking at u too much it's ot of respect plus I bet most of them thought u may be working for a long time in Saudi and it's hard to know if u a new person or not because you could be working and living in here doe years so it's kind of not cool to walk to someone and keep asking them if they're new or not just based on how they look... if people saw you walking outside without talking you could pass as another Arabian person either from Lebanon or Syria or Egypt so they just assume that you must be a worker or another expats from another Arabian country who have been living in here for a while so I hope you don't see it as being rude or standoffish and I get that most people who hear that we opened for tourism thinks that we might see foreign people for the first time or they're not common which is not true it's just it was unlucky that you went outside in the least free time and there is nothing that shows other people that you're a tourist but that's good you get to feel like you belong and been around for a while. The English speaking thing most Saudi people speak it it's just workers who happen to be from another countries they might not speak it and they only speak Arabic like some Asian expats who mostly tend to be older because young people from all around the world at this age have a very good understanding of English. Glad you visited Saudi and I wish you came to the east part where I live and to the Capital Riyadh too and we always welcome people like you who seek to see the truth with their own eyes and experience the culture and sorry that there was no streets to walk as you said we avoid walking in streets we love walking on the beach or parks we rely on the cars a lot but that's gonna change in the future and you could tell why when in the prime of summer the heat might go over 100F easily.
