One of these went under a passenger footbridge in Suffolk, I wanted the 'thumper' experience and it knocked my hat off! Mission accomplished.
@HSTPaul Жыл бұрын
Ah nice, glad you got your mission accomplished. My hat got blown off by a train a few weeks ago, even though I wasn't very close to the edge of the platform

I saw it in Portsmouth back in January. Brought back memories of the old Hampshire units in the town. Great vid , glad to see this still running
@HSTPaul2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I saw it on that tour, and thank you. Yeah it's good to see it out on the mainline

Used to travel on them from Charing Cross to Orpington occasionally. Very civilised and comfy seats Plus a buffet bar
@HSTPaul2 жыл бұрын
Nice. I've only been on this unit once, and yes it's very comfortable. The old seats are always comfy. Buffet bar is always a bonus as well

I never thought I'd sit and watch a video of one of these. I used to take one from Southampton to Portsmouth through the winter months when it was too cold to take my motorbike. They were such a capable and reliable machine, I really liked them.
@HSTPaul11 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching, and yeah I seem to remember them being reliable although I was very young

I grew up riding the 3R ‘Tadpole’ units on the Reading - Tonbridge line. The line ran behind my house too. They sounded exactly the same so hearing it is an instant jump back 45 years! I hope I’ll get to ride this unit one day!
@HSTPaul Жыл бұрын
Ah nice, yeah I believe the 3R units had the same engine. It's a nice unit, if you get the chance go for it. Here's a link for their website www.hastingsdiesels.co.uk/

I can remember going to Hastings from Sevenoaks on those when I was a younger. Happy days!

Great machines, all considered, sometimes the older units seem better than their more modern replacements! Long may they continue in preservation. 🙂

100% agree. Stock built in the last few years is definitely a downgrade in comfort.

0:57 Ding Ding. Buzz Buzz. Tootoot! The thumpers are such happy sounding trains. I mean just listen to her revving up at 1:28. Great upload!

So glad there's a survivor. At the tender age of 18 (in 1980) I went to university and found myself plunged into a world suddenly stripped of peaks, 25's, 20's and Deltics. An insane desolate world where railway trains just hummed, smelt of ozone and sometimes moved over 20mph ... devoid of prime movers .. also known as the Southern region. These were the only trains with character, chugging along, throwing you around inside their slab sided proportions. Lovely. Was in Fort William in the summer ... and there.... was a pair of 73's! Build date 1962! Same age as me? 57!
@HSTPaul3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm glad too. And I grew up on southern region stock so I enjoyed the old stock, although I admit the peaks and 25s were great, and I love the Deltics. And yeah first built 1962, the ones in Scotland were rebuilt a few years ago

Stephen Powell Yeah I agree, shame there's not more of them still left
@stevehillier70185 жыл бұрын
Stephen Powell the actual Hastings units the class 201 were withdrawn from service after the Tunbridge Wells electrification in 1985 86. This was still in the days of BR. Most were scrapped soon after. They were then replaced by the mark 3 stock 1066 electrics.
