A superb video... you've absolutely got this right. The weather and traffic conditions were perfect, and because you were going northbound around the middle of the day, the sun was behind you so it meant the colour contrasts were really well defined. Once you get past Perth, the scenery is wonderful. My wife and I had a great holiday in Ullapool in early July 2021 and the route the coach took was very similar to the route we took. There were a few towns and cities where the coach stopped but we bypassed, other than those stops it's much the same route. It brings back good memories.

What would help, like the cab ride videos of trains is the the junctions / roads we’re travelling on. And towns you pass through to add a little info to the drive. Not too intrusive just bitesized info. Keep up!

A beautiful sunny day to make this stunning video. Arguably some of the finest scenery in Britain and a real treat to watch. Brought back memories of a trip to Aviemore for walking in the Cairngorms in my youth. Thank you for taking the trouble to make this video.

The “Soft Verge” at 1.30.45 is actually an arrester bed instead of a safety fence as the designer (er, me) got his visibility calculations wrong - just the once, though.

Of all the roads in Scotland I find the A9 the most interesting once you pass Stirling Castle. It's like the castle says either welcome to the Highlands or welcome to the Lowlands.

@@foruever its in the process of being slowly dualled. The problem with dualled roads in the wilderness areas is the right turns where it's not viable to grade separate.

The A9 is the most boring and fundamentally dangerous roads I have ever driven in the UK. Populated by psychotic truck driver's and barely conscious locals seemingly doing everything in their power to cause a serious RTC. And that's after 18 years of regular journeys on this counter intuitive nightmare.

A sections of road on the A9 feels strangely European, whether it be the roadside landmarks, the equipment such as crash barriers and emergency phones, even some of the trees remind me a little like driving in Germany. You filmed it on a gorgeous day... a rather therapeutic video to watch. I may take a summer off to come travel around Scotland one year.

When I was designing UK motorways in the 60’s, we used to consult American textbooks (AASHTO) on the subject, and also a German paper on autobahn design, published rather surprisingly in 1943. Maybe rubbed off later on to the A9.
@EdgyNumber1
@EdgyNumber1 3 жыл бұрын
@@ronniel5941 from the technical side, its more to do with the modern roadside furniture, the updated standards; roadside emergency phones, crash barriers, etc., that I'd been seeing. In my opinion, you guys had hindsight to your advantage back from the 60's onwards, and could make adaptation to the original concepts. The slipways are a prime example and they (for the most part,) are truly awesome. On the continent (and in many parts of the US,) standards for them seem to have changed very little since the 40's where cars were much slower. A short run-off leading to a sweeping, sharp, bend means that you have to slow right down on the autobahn or freeway itself before even entering the slipway. UK already took the high speeds (and queing) into account and dare I say it, future proofed them by giving long run offs, with some having a shallow radius sweep to the end junction. There just seems to be a more natural cadence to what a driver needs to do after leaving the motorway at 70mph.

UK design standards are centrally regulated for lengths of slip roads, layout and font size of road signs, road markings, etc., so careful motorists shouldn’t expect to encounter many surprises, if at all.

I've only been on the A9 once going to Aviemore. My speed was constant even on the single carriageway sections. I noticed when I was driving it there are some sections where it's hard to tell if you're still on the dual carriageway, and it was the same on the video. They're planning to upgrade the whole route. Some of the sections had dips or small hills, no easy task. I was playing this at double the speed but still enjoyed the scenery.

Strange how when following the bulk tipper lorry 2:07:00 till Aviemore, it appears to pull away on single carriageway, but looses out on the dual carriageway sections.

Took megabus from Inverness to Sheffield. Worst journey I've ever had. Windscreen wipers fell off at Carrbridge turn off. Had to wait for mechanic as someone stole the bus toolbox. Got to forth road bridge, gearbox failed. Had to wait an hour for a replacement bus. Toilet blocked entering England. Piss was level with the top of toilet bowl. Everytime we went around a corner piss would come sloshing out the bottom of the door. I think it took over 11 hours to get there in the end. I was at that point the world's angriest man. I will never set foot on another megabus, even if it was free, I'd rather walk.

sounds like a journey from hell. But to be fair, the blocked toilet was probably caused by a passenger and could not be cleared en route. But very unpleasant all the same.

Sometimes national express can be cheaper if you book well in advance,plus there's always the possibility of a refund,unless you are at fault,that's not the case with Megabus,plus the toilet onboard a national express coach is better quality along with the seating,I only use Megabus if it's my only option

Well, no wonder nobody wants to drive to Bonny Scotland anymore. Just look at all the speed cameras every few hundred yards! I mean it's not like I like to go 150mph down the road or something, but instead of my childhood memories of the family driving forever on empty roads, taking in the beautiful surroundings, you now have to keep laser focused on your speed so as not to be caught out, which as you can see varies wildly from 30mph one minute to 70mph the next. With a minimum of £100 for a speeding fine and 3 points on your licence per offence, you could well see yourself banned from driving after just one trip to Scotland! In a place like London you'd expect it. But in Scotland?! Absolutely pedantic and pathetic. No thanks.

Good, if you want to drive like a winker go somewhere else then. May I recommend a really long, fast drive off Brighton pier? And the reason the average cameras are on the A9 is so many foreigners were coming to Scotland and wiping their families out.
