As a semi driver myself, I will say that 90% of these truck drivers on this video, are shit drivers. They are too fast, too close, not looking ahead or all of that. At the same time, I'll say that people in cars, need to get off their phones, put down the Starbucks, get the fricking dog off your lap and drive. Or just all together, wake up and pay attention. Please be vigilant out there, lives depend on it.

To summarize previous discussion, stop sign was visible from car height. But obscured by a tree branch at truck driver's height until 1 sec before the intersection. There was no "STOP" painted on the street either. Some argued the presence of a crosswalk and white line should have made it "obvious" that this was a 4-way stop, not a 2-way.

These videos make me wonder if truck drivers are required to keep minimum following distance so they can rear end other vehicles when traffic slows or stops.
@SirBarth4 ай бұрын
For every 10 feet of vehicle, in optimum conditions, there should be at least 1 second following distance. So a 53 foot truck should have 6 seconds following. If traveling above 40mph, add an additional second per their 10ft. So, in theory - A semi truck traveling at 55mph - 12 seconds, give or take. Also depends on load, too. Now we all know cars will use that follow cushion to jump in front of semis. In theory, the larger vehicles are supposed to be "professional" as they have had additional training before they get their CDLs - Per the US Department of Transportation (I can't speak for other countries, I'm familiar more with the US as I used to have a job that required a CDL before I moved to an office job).

More than half of these clips are caused by truckers either not leaving enough room and then traffic suddenly comes to a stop, or they just don't react to already stopped traffic. Sure, trucking is hard job, but are we just letting anyone with a pulse do it at this point? Most of these crashes were preventable with just a little more caution. Imagine getting killed in a rear ender on a motorcycle or in a small car on the freeway by a trucker who just didn't care enough to leave themselves enough stopping distance.
@bobroberts23714 ай бұрын
It is more of becoming aware and reacting to slow / stopped traffic than just following to close. How about you leaving truck following distance while driving a car and see how many cars pop into your buffer zone causing you to drive slower in order to regain the buffer over and over again to the point you will be going significantly below the speed limit? As you go slower and slower, even more cars stuck behind you will be going around to pass causing even more of a speed reduction.

The pickup truck had just started its turn when it first becomes visible through the fog. So there was no way for the pickup driver to see the cammer before he began his turn. The cammer was driving too fast for the conditions. If you think cammer's speed was acceptable, then it's impossible for anyone to safely. make a left turn there. (Left turns across a double yellow onto driveways is allowed in all states I've lived in. But that's not to say there aren't states where it's prohibited.)
@maxxod14 ай бұрын
@@solandri69 Looking at this objectively, it’s a damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I’ve seen accidents in fog, where people slow down because of it and end up getting rear ended by someone who is doing the speed limit. This video was a wrong place, wrong time. In that situation, I’ve gone further up the road to turn around in a better spot and make a right turn than to make a blind left turn. Sure it would be nice if everybody slowed down in poor road conditions but they won’t so this is where we are at.

The only devil's advocate argument I have is that stop sign appeared to be hidden by a tree and too far from the street up on that pole. They, the local DOT or whoever, should make it more obvious. That said, at an intersection you should always assume you may need to stop, there was a stop line, there was a crosswalk, and it looked like the trucker may have been speeding. Trucker is still at fault in my opinion, and the stop sign should be placed better, too.

I have to ask something as a german citizen. We normally do the following when there is a traffic jam forced by an accident or whatever: You should turn on your "emergency turn signals" (the double blinking one i dont know if its called that) so following drivers can notice that there is something wrong and they should hit the brakes to avoid an accident. On all american videos i just saw the last days i noticed NOONE is doing that. Is there some law that you should never use them in a case to warn ppl behind you or something? Its mindblowing to me why there is noone using it like for example on a highway where you guys speed up and there is a traffic jam HOW do you warn ppl behind you to hit the brakes before crashing into each other? I hope you understand what im trying to ask.
