Join Jayna Burkholder and Megan Fox as they dive into a topic that they've been navigating for years. Body image is truly a journey that is always being redefined through the different stages of our lives. Our Mennonite upbringing has definitely had an impact on how we view our appearance, use make-up, get (or don't get) procedures done, and just . . . the aesthetics of it all! Thanks for watching! About the health topic, there's a quote I really like that I try to keep in mind. "I don't eat healthy and exercise because I hate my body and want to change it. I eat healthy and exercise because I love my body and want to take care of it the best I can". (Unfortunately, I have no idea who to credit the quote to. I just saw it somewhere and it has stuck with me.)

I love that the two of you aren’t afraid to have tough conversations. Megan , I use to always wear makeup but as I’ve gotten older and now have a teen daughter I try to focus on who she is on the inside, but wanting to look good on the outside is ok too. So she sees me bare faced and with makeup, but kindness, being empathetic , open hearted and humbling I think can make someone absolutely beautiful!

Jayna’s point that your body is temporary and your soul is eternal is exactly what I needed to hear today! I really know this but hearing it was helpful. I have rheumatoid arthritis and it has hit home in the past years that it will permanently impact my life. How many kids I can have, what activities I can do, and taking very careful steps to stay in as good of health as I can. It’s been anxiety provoking. I love your “talk shows”!

I love the openness of your talks and the comfort you have with the dicomfort of vulnerability and honestly I'm impressed how comfortable you are with topics that were considered taboo in the catholic environment I grew up in and even difficult to be a judgement free conversation when not being a taboo topic. Also I totally feel you on the bra, once you find one that works you just hope you can reorder it for the rest of your life. There's only one kind of shopping I enjoy and that's shopping for fabric. I think that it's important to make little girls feel beautiful to a degree because unfortunately they will hear the opposite very early on because of this odd expectancy to play along with this weird mentality around beauty. Especially when they don't fit with the common expectation, one great thing my parents did was create this safe space for us where our curls were beautiful and our scars were part of our unique canvas, they also taught us to take care of ourselves to be content and comfortable if it made sense to us. It shielded me from a lot of the pressure to fit into this projection put on girls concerning beauty culture, I do freak out about my skin and my hair color though occasionally and had to make the conscious choice to not do a full skin care routine in the middle of the night or just grab the make up cream thingy that's too dark for me anyways whenever I saw a little less amazing skin, I know I'm overly critical but it's like a magnifying lens. I'm fine with being pale and having identyfiable eyebrows and I've gotten fine again with red hair luckily. What always bothered me was this idea of being brave for embracing curls, not thinning thick eyebrows or not wearing make up for example, what's really brave about just being a real person unless there's a culture that doesn't want women looking unique, I even find scars beautiful because it's a trace of the life we we lived on us. I had pictures taken for the family and something felt off and I figured they made me darker first, something I absolutely detest but they just took one of my beauty marks away for no reason other it's something people usually like being taken away and it's considered a flaw. I happen to have a lot of them and I had one taken away for medical reasons but would never want them retouched because they're a part of me like my scars or my eyebrows that suddenly became trendy once. Odd moment when people ask you for the secret for the eyebrows and your reaction can be summed up why would I do anything about my eyebrows, they're just eyebrows. What's really so bad about a scar or beauty mark for people to feel entitled to put concealer on you or cut it out of a picture and shouldn't we have understood the damage that mentality can cause by now? I'm frankly tired of girls being pushed into a marathon they never agreed to take part in in the first place, it should be about taking care of yourself and being comfortable in your own skin and maybe having fun with makeup and fashion. How are they even supposed to build confidence if it's perceived as vain or arrogant often enough to feel great in your own skin even if it's not flawless in the middle of a weird competition they didn't even agree to. I'm reminded of this moment before ballet class where this mom's idea of encouriging her daughter when she felt bad about not being as good yet was to tell her that the other girl was gonna become fat soon and won't be good anymore, she could just have encouraged her to practice because it takes practice to become great at something but this competition was so ingrained already that she had to make it a competition between children.

I think Jayne's tip about the bra is so key! if you can go from fretting about something to not even thinking about it thats amazing! I had a nose job and before I used to hate taking photos with my friends from certain angles, I was super self conscious about the way I smiled/turned etc. and now I dont ever think about it. Its not that I think I now have the most beautiful nose (lol) its just that that insecurity is off my plate and I can focus on what I really care about :)

I’m probably the age of both of your ages added together and I wasn’t laughing at you. We have all done things to help a situation or personal dilemma and it turned into a detriment to ourselves. It seems society tells older woman they need to do more to keep or enhance their beauty. Wrinkles, grey hair….are frowned upon. Young or old, beauty comes from within. A serving heart, a grateful heart, a heart that loves God is the most beautiful of all. Thank you both for sharing. You both always have a lot of good ideas and tips.

Yes i agree!! It is also such a good family time for us. We enjoy walking through the store together and seeing new things or food ideas we could try! I dont find that I spend more at all by being in the store... I've set my budget and we just dont stray past it if we cannot, so shopping online versus instore doesnt change how much I may spend:)

I agree. It's important to teach your children how to behave. How to shop, how to find things... But also what if something happens and you have no choice. My cousin was murdered when his kids were 3 and 4 his wife had no choice. My kids were 6 and 3 when my husband joined the military. We were away from family, friends and everything. I'm glad my kids were already use to going to stores and knew how to behave. By the time he got out I had 3 kids under 13. For 7 years he was gone more than he was home. I didn't have a choice but to take my kids with me. But now that they are grown and as I have watched other mother's struggle it's some of our best memories and I'm grateful.

It’s lovely that in the west we have the freedoms to choose to take our kids shopping or not. Both ways are fine. I do find it teaches my children a lot eg how to buy fresh fruit and veg, maths, self control. However kids are hungry often when we shop so it can be a bit more expensive. We do so much retail therapy in the west, it is also good to go against the grain as well.

I've loved makeup since I was a little girl and I've always had it and played with it, but somehow I was always conscientious of never wanting it to hold me to a standard. I never wanted to feel ugly without it, or have people think I look tired or sick without it. I'd much rather pull it out for special occasions where I want to feel extra bright and shiny, otherwise it's just pressure. I also think that anesthetics have an intrinsic good, people enjoy looking at pleasing things and it is uplifting in the right context. I also found your conversation about health to be nuanced. I love listening to you two chat! Please continue this series!

This topic definitely hit home. I didn't grow up with any modest standards (faith was out of the picture) in my family or extended family. It wasn't until my twenties (with five children at the time) and started attending church did I really grasp what modesty really was. Although I have my personal convictions for me and my now seven children on modesty and what that looks like. It can still be such a challenge navigating all the pressures of friends/family that don't have the same convictions.

This is a topic I think about so often… daily, really. So I’m really thankful that y’all touched on it! Beauty, beautification, and those cultural beauty standards can be so tough. We can easily feel lesser, and those insecurities can eat us alive. It’s also really easy to get caught up in comparison, as well as idolizing our outward appearance and our health (like Jayna said). I think one area I sort of disagree with you all on is actually the fact that our bodies will be resurrected one day. But I don’t think that that means we must make them conform to some temporal, earthly standard, nor that our health should become too high of a priority. It all comes down to balance, I think. I’m still working on this, too! You’re not alone in that. It’s being presentable, feminine, and trying to look our best for the sake of glorifying and honoring God. It’s trying to eat foods that fuel our bodies, and staying active to keep them working as well as we can. I agree with you: walking around in potato sacks and not practicing personal hygiene and health routines isn’t going to bring glory to Him! But neither is making our outward appearance an idol and spending all of our time and resources on tanning, toning, and every beauty regimen under the sun. The truth is that we all have stuff to learn here. I so appreciate that you both shared your hearts and experiences. I think this will really help young women who watch your channel. :)

I love what Jayna said about health and it was very good and encouraging for me to hear from another person. I was a very active person, but had to be on total bedrest for pregnancy, then my hormones went wacky, I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, my husband was struggling with mental health and childhood trauma and not in a good place, so while doing all the extra work around the house, I fell off a bucket used as a step stool and tore my knee up bad. So in 2yrs I gained 60lbs and I received a lot of judgement from not only Drs for my weight, but I see and feel the judgement from our society. Thankfully I'm on a better journey toward health and my husband is also. But God has been reminding me again and again that my physical fitness is not where my value lies and often His quiet whisper is the only place I'm hearing that from because sadly our culture (and even within the church) labels someone's value on their weight or outward appearance, and I have felt that heavily in the past couple years. But thank you Jayna for sharing those words here. It was a blessing.

I would say this isn't Biblical... But of the world. While we should take care of God's temple our beauty should come from the Biblical aspects of the Bible. If a woman is in a wheel chair and can't exercise she is just as beautiful or can be prettier than a woman who lives in a gym

As the mum of 18yr old twin girls I would suggest that affirmations for ourself and our children will help them have the confidence to be themselves. Loving these vlogs and looking forward to next week x

First video I’m watching! Brought to you by This Mama’s House! I always feel like the odd duck when subscribing because I am not able to have babies after my miscarriage a few years ago! I still hold onto hope that maybe a miracle will happen one day but I also hold onto my faith. If this is what was intended than it is something I have to find ways to be thankful for. I still have my faith and I still live by the same principles as well as lifestyle. Very exited to watch more of your content! 💕

Megan, I’m right there with you - I ❤️ grocery shopping! I can see how delivery can save money but I feel like going to the store actually saves ME money. I take the time to browse around and often find deals and sales too good to pass up. My local Kroger often discounts produce and meat nearing its best by date, which usually doesn’t show up online. I meal plan and go shopping with a list but find that I often end up adjusting my meals according to what’s on sale. Some homemakers find pleasure in sewing their kids’ clothes or styling their home (respectfully. nothing wrong with either!); I get a thrill out of finding a good bargain on groceries and serving fresh, healthy meals made from scratch to my family:)

I decided a few years ago that what matters is the why. Like my body has a lot more weight to it than it did in my 20s but that's because I have had pregnancies and I'd rather have my babies than less weight. So I decided to just be satisfied and exercise to help my mental and physical endurance or to be able to function better, but I'm not worried about body image. I just figure it is what it is 😊 I can't imagine either one of you being called arrogant! You are both humble and kind💞

Megan, your toothpaste episode made me laugh out loud 😂 Probably because I had such bad acne during Highschool and I could totally relate to doing something like this. In fact, one time I was a little overzealous with the benzoyl peroxide cream and dotted it ALL over my face. My skin did not like that at all, cause the next morning I woke up with red splotches and my skin started to peel from being SO dry. Yeah, that was a bad idea. Oh my, the things we used to do to quick fix our skin problems, eh? 😉 I learned my lesson. It wasn’t until much later in life that I found out most of worst my breakouts were related to my diet. I was sensitive to dairy and I had no idea! So now, I’m able to keep my breakouts down to a minimum. That’s been so helpful in maintaining my skin health! Anywho, thanks for your videos! I’ve really enjoyed them.

The girls are baaack!! Woo- hoo! When you take your kids shopping at the grocery- you tell them they can have one item but they have to hold it until the groceries are all checked out. If they put it down they don’t get it… soooo they have their hands busy. Love Jayna’s dress!! Vanity is something everyone should be aware of within themselves. The fruit may be beautiful on the outside but rotten inside. Which matters more to God?

Just another perspective - at 22 I suddenly developed interstitial cystitis which can be absolutely debilitating (and it was for me.) Some people even commit suicide over the constant bladder pain, urgency, frequency, and pelvic pressure with no sense of relief. It's like the worst UTI, but no infection, and nothing brings relief. I did everything Western Medicine had to offer. So many rounds of antibiotics, medications that turned to formaldehyde in my body, etc. Ultimately they told me there's no cure for it and I'd be in pain the rest of my life. There were months I couldn't leave the house. Walking was painful. Sometimes I could only sleep squeezing a pillow between my legs, almost blacking out from a sensation I had to pee so bad, but then there was actually nothing. And even if I could go, no sense of relief. I remember thinking, I wouldnt commit suicide but I genuinely can't imagine living the rest of my life like this. I ended up finding a holistic practitioner via an IC Facebook group. Saved up and flew in and out of another state to see him. What ended up helping? Lots of supplements. Like a LOT. And an extremely clean diet. I had yeast overgrowth, leaky gut, and hormones not metabalizing correctly, as well as a few other issues. I had always led a healthy lifestyle and been active, ate partially organic. Part of healing my chronic illness was completely cutting all sugar. Even maple syrup and honey, fruit juice, dried fruit, etc even As a small ingredient in anything. As well as gluten and dairy and a few others things. God, and this regimen healed me of a disease western medicine considers incurable. For the rest of my life I have to stay gluten and refined sugar free and try to eat organic as much as possible as my gut will always have the tendency to become leaky. For me, in order to be useful for the Lord, to have my life back and be able to leave my home, I HAVE to take my health seriously. I saw some comments that said "some people won't eat at a church potluck if its not natural or organic" sometimes there's another side. That might be the only way someone is functional. That might be the only way they can BE healthy and serve God. Let's not judge people who HAVE to keep health at the forefront of their life. The verse isn't saying bodily exercise "only" profits a little. I believe the fact that it's mentioning it at all, proves it IS important. Like, hey, bodily exercise, that profits us. Only a little in comparison to spiritual exercise, but STILL important. We don't want to become like those who believe only the spirit is important. God gave us both a spirit and a body. He himself took on a body, and we will have heavenly bodies. Our bodies matter too. That's why sinning against the body is a sin against God. Hopefully I'm tying my thoughts together in a way that makes sense. ♥️

I can relate to your health issue in a small way. I also have bladder pain, but it’s a lot milder than yours. I am an older woman and what helped me was estrogen cream. I refused to take the oxybutinin the doctor prescribed because of the side effects and I wonder about the side effects of the estrogen. I’m thankful for the relief of pain, though. I’m glad you found relief as well!
